Algebra in the Renaissance, Part 1
Student lecturer Jennifer Hineline started today's discussion with an overview of the social climate of the Renaissance era, specifically the economic situation. Instead of traveling to buy and returning home to sell, merchants would hire others to do the traveling and buying. This complicated the accounting process, bringing about a need for mathematicians as accountants. Ms. Hineline also made a connection between the ease with which Arabic numerals can be altered and the practice of writing out numbers in other ways, which is still in practice today in the writing of checks. After a brief discussion of some of the symbolic notation used by some Italian algebraists, Ms. Hineline explained Paolo Gerardi's algorithm for adding algebraic fractions. This was very similar to what we teach in beginning algebra, except that instead of necessarily finding the lowest common denominator, Gerardi would simply use the product of the denominators of all the addends. Ms. Hineline then discussed Maestro Dardi and his method of solving cubic equations. Unfortunately, Dardi's method only works when certain relationships exist between the coefficients. Ms. Hineline proceeded to introduce a series of mathematicians from France, Germany, England and Portugal, paying special attention along the way to Nicolas Chuquet from France. Chuquet theorized that given two ratios, a/b and c/d, the ratio (a+c)/(b+d) would fall between the two original ratios. Ms. Hineline demonstrated Chuquet's method of estimating square roots using his ratio theory. Although he never used the word limit, Chuquet was using a variation of the squeeze theorem and a limiting process to find square roots. Chuquet realized that square roots that are not integers are irrational, and he acknowledged that his method would never allow him to find a square root exactly. But by taking this method far enough, we can come arbitrarily close to the actual root, and we can estimate a root to any desired degree of accuracy.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION SYMBOLS
Plus (+) and minus (-). The plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et (and), though appearing with the downward stroke not quite vertical, was found in a manuscript dated 1417 (Cajori).
The + and - symbols first appeared in print in Mercantile Arithmetic or Behende und hubsche Rechenung auff allen Kauffmanschafft , by Johannes Widmann (born c. 1460), published in Leipzig in 1489. However, they referred not to addition or subtraction or to positive or negative numbers, but to surpluses and deficits in business problems (Cajori vol. 1, page 128).
Cajori says, "There is clear evidence that, as a lecturer at the University of Leipzig, Widmann had studied manuscripts in the Dresden library in which + and - signify operations, some of these having been written as early as 1486." Johnson (page 144) says a series of notes from 1481, annotated by Widmann, contain the + and - symbols, and he asks whether Widman could have copied these symbols from some unknown professor at the University of Leipzig. Johnson also says that a student's notes from one of Widmann's 1486 lectures show the + and - signs.
Giel Vander Hoecke used + and - as symbols of operation in Een sonderlinghe boeck in dye edel conste Arithmetica

http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~mglg/klein/einfache.htm

72. NASD Regulation Press Release - 04/18/01

As part of a settlement with the NASD, Stifel has agreed to exchange the Class B shares sold to these customers for Class A shares at no charge. The cost of this restitution offer, should every customer make the exchange, is approximately $225,000, which will be paid jointly by Stifel and Grimes. Mutual funds can be offered for sale to investors in different classes. In this case, the Class A shares incurred a front-end sales load, but had lower on-going expenses than Class B shares. Customers who purchased Class B shares did not pay a sales charge at the time of purchase, but may have paid a charge when they sold their shares, unless the held them for six years. B Shares also incurred higher on-going distribution expenses than Class A shares. Over a two-year period, NASD Regulation found that Grimes engaged in a pattern of making unsuitable recommendations of Class B shares to customers. He recommended that each of 15 customers purchase over $250,000 in Class B shares, when it would have been more cost-effective for those customers to purchase of Class A shares. In fact, the fund had a maximum purchase limitation of $250,000 in Class B shares. NASD Regulation found that recommendations to purchase over $250,000 in Class B shares exceeded the maximum purchase limitation and were unsuitable in light of the amount sold, the sales and distribution charges incurred and because the customers could have purchased the A Shares with substantially lower sales charges. Stifel failed to supervise by not having a system in place to detect sales in excess of the maximum purchase limits on the funds it sold.

The world was supposed to end on this day back in 1533. After exposure to the prophetic writings of Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa, and a prolonged analysis of the Book of Revelations, mathematician and biblical scholar Michael Stifel calculated that Judgment Day would begin at 8:00am, October 19, 1533. Filled with dread and horror, Stifel publicly announced his prediction to his fellow citizens in Lochau, Germany. When the date came and went without incident, Stifel (now self-dubbed with the Latin title of Stefelius) was dragged from his home by neighbours and flogged to death in public view.
