James Stirling's untimely death in 1992 cut short an immensely fruitful later phase of a creative career which began in the 1950s. Stirling inaugurated this second period in the Seventies when he established his main London office in partnership with Michael Wilford and devised his ambitious urban-planning proposals for the area round the Cathedral and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. International recognition resulted in a host of spectacular commissions for the team, consolidating its reputation and its influence on a younger generation of architects.
James Stirling, Michael Wilford and Associates: Buildings and Projects 1975-1992 is a retrospective documentation of this achievement, detailing the plans and projects that Stirling executed right up until his death. Critical appraisals, technical data and extensive illustrations record many important buildings, including the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart; the Sackler Wing extension to the Fogg Museum, Harvard; the Science Centre in Berlin; the Clore Gallery for the Turner Collection at the Tate Gallery, London; the Perform-ing Arts Center at Cornell University, New York State; and the B. Braun Melsungen A.G. buildings at Melsungen in Germany. All these projects testify to Stirling and Wilford's ability to synthesize many types of architectural idiom into work rich with a sense of play and spontaneity.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Stirling, James Frazer (architect) Scottish architect. He was possibly the most influential of his generation. While in partnership with James Gowan (1924), he designed an influential housing estate at Ham Common, Richmond (1958), and the Leicester University Engineering Building (195963) in a constructivist vein. He later adopted a more eclectic approach, exemplified in his considered masterpiece, the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, Germany (197783), which blended constructivism, modernism, and several strands of classicism. He also designed the Clore Gallery (198086) extension to the Tate Gallery, London. He was knighted in 1983.

How to get BBC Four BBC Homepage ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! TO MARS BY A-BOMB Wednesday 26 March Listen to an interview with Freeman Dyson ARTHUR C. CLARKE Listen to an interview with the science fiction writer James Stirling 1926 - 1992 Back to audio clips A leader of his profession for many years, James Stirling was born in Glasgow and educated at Liverpool University. From 1956-1963 he developed his own practice with James Gowan, and from 1971 was in partnership with Michael Wilford. Stirling's approach and methods had many different outcomes. The so-called New Brutalist style is shown to good effect in the apartments he and Gowan built at Ham Common, Surrey in 1956. Later, his modernist phase produced some impressive buildings, notably the Engineering Building at Leicester University (1959) and the History Library at Cambridge (1964). With the Staatsgalerie at Stuttgart (1977), Stirling began to develop classical themes in a post-modern manner; a direction he continued with his new wing at the Tate Gallery, London (1980). His Braun factory at Melsungen, Germany (1991) is calmly rational, avoiding post-modernist tricks, and critics have applauded Stirling's insistence that "contemporary architecture is concerned with the humanisation of the environment". Stirling wanted his buildings to be in harmony with common sense, tradition and the existing environment and show a concern for people. He received the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture in 1980 and was knighted in 1991.

, with regards the section we are organising on nonlinear mathematical modeling in exercise physiology
    Research Interests
My main area of research is in the application of nonlinear dynamics to modeling in sport. I also work on environmental fluid flows (pollution problems etc.) and chaos in both nonlinear optics (ie. on chaotic behavior in what are known as chi(2) materials) and in breathers (ie. chaotic breathers in damped driven DNLS). The research in exercise physiology is done in collaboration with Bengt Saltin and Henrick Larsen at the Center for Muscle Research August Krogh Institute , Rigshospitalet, in Copenhagen and Maria Zakynthinaki in Barcelona. The aim of the research is to model physiological responses to varying exercise intensities, using tools from dynamical systems and apply the findings to training methodology and testing. I presented a weekly seminar serise on this at the , Barcelona. The other work involves the use tools from dynamical systems to analyse and modeling a variety of bio mechanical problems involving nonlinear time serise and apply the findings to training methodology and testing. This work also uses animation tools as an aid to further understanding the biomechanical processes.

    Introduction
    James Stirling
"I ceased to believe in Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy of "truth to materials" when I saw for the first time a building by Palladio- where the peeling columns were in fact made of bricks- and not of marble or stone, as I had naively assumed from the books. I believe that the shapes of a building should indicate- perhaps display- the usage the way of life of its occupants, and it is therefore likely to be rich and varied in appearance, and its expression is unlikely to be simple... We are not much concerned with the imagery of space flight or super-advanced technology, as I think an architect usually has to make to with the technology which is normal and is cost-wise available to him. According to what is appropriate for a particular building problem, the building could, I think, be made of any materials- old or new, traditional of technological- and the whole spectrum of the past, from earth works to plastics, is usable according to the differing economic/climate conditions prevailing in different countries."
