Introduction The Hall of Fame showcases famous Irish scientists and their discoveries. While Ireland is more commonly known for it's contribution to the arts in the form of it's musical and literary heritage, Ireland was also a vibrant participant in the British scientific community during a period when Britain was a leading centre of knowledge creation. These scientists and engineers have contributed significantly in their fields of study. Their achievements are marked by an SI unit, a CGS unit, a Nobel prize winner and several important equations and mechanisms bearing their names. You may never need to know in your day to day life the contribution these people have made. However, underlying all our present-day conveniences and lifestyles are their contributions. Join IASTE in celebrating their achievements....

George Gabriel Stokes
Born in Ireland on August 13, 1819, George Stokes was the youngest of six children. His father, a rector, directed his early education before sending him to a school in Dublin. Stokes attended Bristol College in England, followed by Pembroke College at Cambridge University, where he studied mathematics. He graduated in 1841 and was bestowed with many honors, including a fellowship that enabled him to remain at Cambridge. In 1849, Stokes was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics and spent the rest of his life working at the prestigious school. Throughout his career, Stokes emphasized the importance of experimentation and problem solving, rather than focusing solely on pure mathematics. His practical approach served him well and Stokes made important advances in several fields, most notably hydrodynamics and optics. An advocate of the wave theory of light, Stokes was one of the prominent nineteenth century scientists that believed in the concept of an ether permeating space, which he supposed was necessary for light waves to travel. Though the existence of an ether was later disproved, Stokes's efforts in the area helped pioneer the science of geodesy , the study of the Earth and its gravitational field.

The collection of their papers comprises lecture notes, scientific papers and letters from other notable scientists and mathematicians such as Michael Faraday, J.P. Joule, J.F.W. Herschel and Joseph Larmor. Access to parts of the collection is restricted since some papers are fragile. Byl nejmladsi ze sesti deti a jeho 3 starsi bratri se stali duchovnimi. Byl jednim z nejvyznamnejsich irskych vedcu. Je povazovan za jednoho ze zakladatelu hydrodynamiky. V roce 1832 opustil Skreen a zacal chodit do skoly v Dublinu. V roce 1835 (bylo mu 16 let) odjel do Anglie a zacal studova Bristol College. Nasledne studoval v Cambridge. V roce 1851 se stal clenem Kralovske spolecnosti. V e stejnem roce publikoval svuj zakon viskozity. Jeho prinos hydrodynamice byl ocenen tim, ze po nem byla pojmenovana jednotka kinematicke viskozity (v systemu CGS). Je po nem pojmenovana tzv. Navier - Stokesova rovnice. Stokes Summer School
6-10 August 1998 Fifty international experts, among them some of the world’s leading authorities, crammed into Skreen Parish Hall to celebrate at his birthplace the many areas of physics and mathematics Following a reception sponsored by Sligo Institute of Technology on 6th August, the Summer School was officially opened by Mr. Ray McSharry, former EU Commissioner for Agriculture. This was followed by a Public Lecture on Stokes and Skreen by Professor Alastair Wood (Dublin City University). The main theme of the Friday sessions was propagation of water waves, a topic on which Stokes wrote extensively. Lectures were given on Stokes damping of Euler's disc-a singularity at finite time by Professor Keith Moffatt (Cambridge), Group velocity, Stokes waves and freak waves by Professor Howell Peregrine (Bristol) and The Stokes Conjecture on the Extreme Wave by Professor J.B. McLeod (Pittsburgh). To balance the more technical talks there was a paper on Explanation and Understanding - Stokes and asymptotic reasoning by the American philosopher Professor Robert Batterman (Ohio).
