Marshall Stone 's father was a distinguished lawyer and the family tradition would have had him follow his father's subject. He studied at Harvard from 1919 to 1922, then was appointed an instructor at Harvard for session 1922/23 to see whether he would enjoy teaching mathematics and whether he would take his mathematical studies further. Indeed he did rapidly decide that he wanted to pursue a career in mathematics and studied for his doctorate under Birkhoff . His doctorate was awarded in 1926 for a thesis entitled Ordinary Linear Homogeneous Differential Equations of Order n and the Related Expansion Problems. By 1925 he was appointed to Columbia University, in 1927 to Harvard. During this period Stone's interests followed very much those of his research supervisor Birkhoff . He published eleven papers on the theory of orthogonal expansions between 1925 and 1928. In these papers a special role is played by expansions in terms of the eigenfunctions of linear differential operators.

Cazenovia, New York John Stone and Justice Marshall began their tower clock making careers as employees of Austin Van Riper. As his successors, they were in partnership from 1859-1875. The highly decorative yet sturdy frame of this Model 1, time only, movement consists of two cast-iron sections which are bolted together. The lower section provides the long barrel with flatbed support while the upper section allows for a shallow plate-and-pillar construction. Donated by Seth G. Atwood, FNAWCC #15465

Harry Potter A controversy has erupted over Marshall Field's use of Harry Potter as a holiday window display. Perched atop the Field's store, Harry Potter's white owl, Hedwig, watches over Chicago's State Street. Up until now, the history of Marshall Field's holiday display windows could be said to consist of two stages: the religious and (beginning in the 1980s), the secular. This year, Field's has been accused by some of entering a third stage of holiday displays: an anti-Christian one. The culprit? The occult world of Harry Potter. Is the use of flying brooms, magic spells, sorcerers, and wizards as a symbol of the holiday season a slap in the face of Christianity? You decide.

Harry Potter A controversy has erupted over Marshall Field's use of Harry Potter as a holiday window display. Potter Index Harry's non-magical Aunt Petunia is a mean-spirited and nosy woman who considers the world of magic evil and is determined to keep her orphaned nephew Harry uninformed about his magical background. When Harry turns eleven and receives a letter from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon refuse to let him see it. Soon, though, hundreds of copies of the letter begin to appear out of thin air. There is no escaping them... Should Marshall Field's have used Harry Potter as a holiday window display ? The climate system is extremely complex, involving so many different components and interacting processes, that even with the biggest, fastest computers it is not possible to come close to representing all of them accurately. To make progress in this situation, it is essential to improve the understanding of fundamental physical, chemical, and biological processes that control climate. Only with increased understanding will it be possible to construct models with sufficient accuracy and efficiency to make explicit, quantitative projections. As illustrated below, the CGCS has a focused program of scientific research that concentrates on five fundamental processes of the climate system, and incorporating the knowledge into global models. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES The Stone family in New England has its origins in Simon Stone, who emigrated from Bromley, England, and settled in Massachusetts in 1635. Frederick Lauson Stone (1836-1924), was the son of Hannah T. Fiske and Lauson Stone. In 1861 he married Ann Sophia Butler (b. 1842), the daughter of Marshall Butler of Chesterfield, N.H. In 1874 they moved from their farm in Chesterfield to Amherst because of the educational opportunities available there. For twenty years they operated a farm in Mill Valley before moving to a house on Main Street. Mr. Stone served as Selectman in Amherst during the years 1884-1886 and 1889-1890, was one of the founders of the Fort River Creamery, and had many real estate interests in Amherst. Well known in Amherst as one of the old-style "cattle drovers," Frederick L. Stone was considered a local authority on cattle. Frederick L. and Ann Butler Stone had three sons: Winthrop Ellsworth, Harlan Fiske, and Lauson; and one daughter, Helen L. Stone Willard

Annie Leibovitz, in the introduction to her book, Shooting Stars Welcome to www.marshallphoto.com. You are about to view a body of work that, for logistical reasons, has never been seen in its entirety. In pre-Internet days, getting access to Jim Marshall's 40-year collection of music photographs was as painful as pulling teeth - a long and grueling process that involved begging a visit to his cramped fileroom and tangling with his capricious whims; then, once in the door, being confronted by more than twelve thousand rolls of film. The sheer magnitude of the collection just boggles the mind. Yes, like a visit to the dentist, a visit to Jim was something that the cognoscenti avoided except in extreme emergencies when someone else's second-best shot of Jimi Hendrix just wouldn't do. When it had to be a Marshall, regardless of the risk.

Urgent Request to the Blue Fairy:
Please Turn These Children Into Stone
by ZEYNEP TOUFE
Fairy tales often have a universal appeal and draw children of all nations into their magical world. Pinocchio is no exception where the Blue Fairy rewards moral behavior and grants a puppet flesh-and-blood status. I do doubt, however, that children in Iraq or Afghanistan could understand why an inanimate, man-made object would ever want to be a child of the flesh and blood kind. In their world, the flesh of children is there for the maiming and the blood for flowing unlike those beautiful, sacrosanct objects of art which must be preserved and doted on. As the British Independent reports, "an international band of curators and historians anxious not to repeat the damage inflicted on Iraqi treasures during the Gulf War 11 years ago are appealing to the American government to take the historic sites into account." (<http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/1107-04.htm>) It was the 1,400-year-old Buddha statues carved into the mountainside at Bamiyan that triggered the heart-rending cries of concern. The New York Times (03/19/01) reported that Taliban envoy Rahmatullah Hashimi explained that the decision was made after an international NGO offered money to restore the statues but refused to allow the money to be used in refugee camps where 300 children had just died. Hashimi recounted that the NGO was asked that "instead of spending money on statues, why didn't they help our children who are dying of malnutrition?" Upon being told that "this money is only for statues", they decided to destroy them.
