Sahlins, who has collaborated a good deal with James Redfield at Chicago, is quoted in last week's Chronicle of Higher Education: "I wanted to explore why Thucydides sometimes narrates history in terms of great individual actors and sometimes in terms of collectivities," he says. "I found my answer in Bobby Thomson's 1951 home run ... and then I brought in the Elian Gonzalez case."

(portions from Jim Grasso and the February 1975 ABA Fan Club Newsletter used with permission) During the summer of 1968, Los Angeles construction businessman Jim Kirst bought the struggling Anaheim Amigos . Kirst immediately moved the franchise to Los Angeles where it became the Los Angeles Stars. The team's home court in Los Angeles was the Los Angeles Sports Arena (capacity 13,325). A 5-game local TV contract was signed and Jim Hardy was named general manager. In their best move of all, the Stars signed former NBA-great Bill Sharman (left) as their new coach. Sharman left a high-paying job as head coach of the San Francisco Warriors (a team he took to the NBA Finals in 1967) to come to the Stars. Sharman had also previously coached the L.A. Jets and the Cleveland Pipers in the ABL. The Stars signed their first five draft choices an ABA record and Sharman drilled them non-stop. Nearly all of the former Amigo players were traded or waived, and the Stars began the 1968-69 season with eight rookies, including blue-chippers Larry Miller (North Carolina), Merv Jackson (University of Utah at Salt Lake City), Bobby Warren (Vanderbilt), George Stone (Marshall) and injury-plagued Ed Johnson (Tennessee State).

operations, sent a flood of readings that were received and recorded by scientists on the ground. "Even the quick-look made to date reveals that this data harvest is rich in content," said Dr. Nobie Stone, NASA TSS-1R mission scientist at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. "Perhaps the most significant finding," Stone said, "is that tether currents proved to be up to three times greater than existing theoretical models predicted prior to the mission. With the amount of power generated being directly proportional to the current, this bodes well for technological applications. "Reversing the direction of current flow puts the system into an electric-motor mode," Stone explained. This harnessed energy could furnish thrust for reboosting a space station, satellite or Shuttle in a decaying orbit.

(NASA) Mission: Expedition Three, ISS Mission 7A.1, STS-105 Space Shuttle Flight Experiment Location on ISS: n/a Principal Investigator: Dr. Peggy A. Whitson, Johnson Space Center, Houston Project Manager: Michelle Kamman, Johnson Space Center, Houston Overview Human exposure to microgravity the unique low-gravity environment inside the International Space Station and other spacecraft results in a number of physiological changes to the human body. Among these changes are alterations in renal function, fluid redistribution, bone loss and muscle atrophy, all of which contribute to an altered urinary environment and the potential for renal stone formation during and immediately after flight. Previous data have demonstrated that human exposure to microgravity increases the risk of renal (kidney) stone development during and immediately after space flight. In-flight changes previously observed include decreased urine volume and increased urinary excretion of calcium, phosphate, and sodium.
