To accept that hunters are affluent is therefore to recognise that the present human condition of man slaving to bridge the gap between his unlimited wants and his insufficient means is a tragedy of modern times. The reality is fairly close, as archaeologists increasingly are using images from space to spot the faint traces of early civilizations. In this true adventure, the enemy is not a horde of Nazi plunderers, but poverty driving simple farmers to destroy forests in a futile effort to create more farms. Dr. Thomas Sever, NASA's only archaeologist, uses images from NASA's Landsat and other Earth observation satellites to look for subtle differences in color and contrast that indicate that humankind once had farms and cities under what is now jungle. His main area of study now is Guatemala on the Yucatan Peninsula of Central America.

David Marshall October 29 - November 30, 2001 Retrospective 1970 - 2001 DAVID MARSHALL Sculptor Artist Statement My forms are the product of a lifetime of experience with tools and materials. Works from various cultures and different styles, from the so-called primitives to the contemporary have, of course, influenced my vision. I prefer carving to modeling or assembling shapes and volumes. I have a growing interest in geometric forms and in composition. This tendency has led me to use simpler forms which are visible also in my earliest work. This simplification does not exclude, however, interest in more intuitive forms. An interest in geometry and the crystalline structure of stone does not exclude figurative, psychological and sociological elements in my work. I do not sculpt to illustrate or produce a symbol of someone else's idea, as is often asked of artists in public competitions. My work is based on personal vision. David Marshall, Sculptor
