Sylvester, James (1814-1897)

Eccentric and gifted English mathematician who was a close friend of Cayley . He was absent-minded, but nonetheless an accomplished poet and musician. After a brief stint as a professor in America, he returned to England. Here, he could not find a job and became a lawyer, in which capacity he met Cayley . Following a professorship at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich from 1855-1870, he became a professor at Johns Hopkins in 1876. He invented Sylvester's dialytic method for eliminating an unknown in two polynomial equations. He also collaborated with Cayley in his work on forms, discovering canonical binary forms for odd degrees. Forms for even degrees were later solved by E. K. Wakeford Sylvester also founded the American Journal of Mathematics in 1878. In 1883, he returned to England to fill the Savilian professorship of Geometry at Oxford after the death of Henry Smith . At the ripe age of 71, he invented the theory of reciprocants (differential invariants).

Mathematics
Mathematics is not a book confined within a cover and bound between brazen clasps, whose contents it needs only patience to ransack; it is not a mine, whose treasures may take long to reduce into possession, but which fill only a limited number of veins and lodes; it is not a soil, whose fertility can be exhausted by the yield of successive harvests; it is not a continent or an ocean, whose area can be mapped out and its contour defined: it is limitless as that space which it finds too narrow for its aspirations; its possibilities are as infinite as the worlds which are forever crowding in and multiplying upon the astronomer's gaze.

James Joseph Sylvester arrived in 1876 to build an infant university By James Stimpert
Special to The Gazette

James Stimpert, of MSEL Special Collections, is Homewood archivist. This is the first in an occasional historical series that will appear in the year leading up to the 125th anniversary of the founding of Johns Hopkins When James Joseph Sylvester came to The Johns Hopkins University in 1876, he was the most senior of the original faculty, in terms of age and prior accomplishments. The university's first professor of mathematics , the 61-year-old Sylvester had already had a full career in both academia and private business. Alternately brilliant and erratic, warm and irascible, benevolent and egocentric, Sylvester helped propel the infant university to the forefront of scholarly attention soon after his arrival in Baltimore. The founding chair of the Department of Mathematics, James Joseph Sylvester came from England to Johns Hopkins after a full career in academia and business. Born in 1814 to the family of a Jewish merchant in London, Sylvester showed mathematical talent at an early age. Barred from most universities because of his religion, he entered the University of London at the age of 14. After a number of false starts, Sylvester passed his examinations at St. John's College, Cambridge. Because he could not subscribe to the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England, however, Sylvester was denied his degree and any hope of competing for prizes and fellowships. He later succeeded in earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from Trinity College, Dublin. Seeing opportunities in the United States, he took up residence at the University of Virginia, where he assumed the chair of mathematics in 1841.

Symposium ``James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897)''

Friday the 9th of April 1999
during the 1999 Dutch Mathematical Congress
(Utrecht)
PROGRAMMA
Within the framework of the 34th Dutch Mathematical Congress, a historical symposium was held, to commemmorate J.J. Sylvester (1814-1897). About 50 people partcipated and enjoyed the lectures. Abstracts of the lectures follow below.
First Lecture
Robin J. Wilson (Open University UK): ``Sylvester's years in Oxford ''.
Abstract
In 1883 Sylvester was elected Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford University at the age of 69, after a period as the first professor of mathematics at the newly formed Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In this talk we summarize his achievements in Oxford, from the time of his appointment to his retirement through failing eyesight in 1894. In particular, we discuss his unusual inaugural address, outline his research work and its frustrations, and describe his founding of the Oxford Mathematical Society Second lecture Martyn Mulder (Erasmus University, Rotterdam): ``Sylvester and the emergence of graph theory''

Did you know . . .?
The history of matrices goes back to ancient times! But the term "matrix" was not applied to the concept until 1850.
"Matrix" is the Latin word for womb, and it retains that sense in English. It can also mean more generally any place in which something is formed or produced.
The orgins of mathematical matrices lie with the study of systems of simultaneous linear equations. An important Chinese text from between 300 BC and AD 200, Nine Chapters of the Mathematical Art Chiu Chang Suan Shu ), gives the first known example of the use of matrix methods to solve simultaneous equations. In the treatise's seventh chapter, "Too much and not enough," the concept of a determinant first appears, nearly two millennia before its supposed invention by the Japanese mathematician Seki Kowa in 1683 or his German contemporary Gottfried Leibnitz (who is also credited with the invention of differential calculus, separately from but simultaneously with Isaac Newton). More uses of matrix-like arrangements of numbers appear in chapter eight, "Methods of rectangular arrays," in which a method is given for solving simultaneous equations using a counting board that is mathematically identical to the modern matrix method of solution outlined by

PERESIE
Joseph PERESIE and his wife Enrica BIZZETTI both are believed to have come from that section of Northern Italy that was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In his citizenship papers, Joseph renounced allegiance to Franz-Josef of Austria-Hungary. So far, the only clues I have about his background are this notation, a photograph from a studio with branches in Trento and Roveretto and my grandmother's assertion that Joseph cam from Trente Trieste. He settled in Jefferson Co, PA and worked as a coal miner. Louis Charles and his family moved to Erie Co, NY, about 1941-1942.
