Sylvester, James Joseph b. , Sept. 3, 1814, London
d. March 15, 1897, London British mathematician who with Arthur Cayley founded the theory of algebraic invariants, algebraic-equation coefficients that are unaltered when the coordinate axes are translated or rotated. In 1838 Sylvester became professor of natural philosophy at University College, London. In 1841 he accepted the professorship of mathematics at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, but resigned after only three months. Four years later he went to London, where he became an actuary for an insurance company, retaining his interest in mathematics only through tutoring. One of the most notable of his private pupils was Florence Nightingale. In 1846 he became a law student at the Inner Temple, and in 1850 he was admitted to the bar. While working as a lawyer Sylvester began an enthusiastic and profitable partnership with Cayley. Together, they created the theory of algebraic forms. From 1855 to 1870 Sylvester was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He went to the United States once again in 1876 to become professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. While there he founded (1878) and became the first editor of the American Journal of Mathematics

    Preface

    Grahams are Scotch Irish

    Clayton's balloon ascension
The descendants of Samuel Guinn are many and are scattered over parts of this state and over several of the Western states. They have always been regarded as people of strict integrity, upright and honest. Some of those who moved West, it is reported, accumulated large property, while many of those remaining can boast of a competency and a surplus. Two of his grandsons, Andrew and Samuel, are now living at Lowell on almost the identical spot where their grandfather located one hundred and twenty-five years ago. Andrew is one of the largest landowners in Summers county. We will have occasion to again refer to this branch of the Guinn family during the further progress of these pages. We will now note briefly some account of the descendants of James Guinn, the brother of Samuel, and who located here at the same time. The first cabin of James Guinn, according to tradition, was located one and a half or two miles up Keller’s Creek from Lowell at which is now known as the Laban Guinn place. Our Information is that he had four sons, Robert, James, Joseph and Samuel and possibly there were daughters also of which we have no account. He died many years before his brother, Samuel. The writer remembers to have seen the house in which he lived and the door was constructed with some kind of heavy bolt fastenings so that it could not be broken into by the Indians. His son, James, was appointed Ensign at the first court held in Monroe county. Joseph settled about a mile farther up Keller’s Creek, on what was afterwards the Red Sulphur Turnpike, and brought up a large family, among whom were John, Sylvester, James, Augustus and Joseph.

    Previous Next
    Biography:
SYLVESTER, JAMES AUSTIN Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1807. On December 18, 1835 he enlisted at Newport, Kentucky in the volunteer company being raised by Captain Sidney Sherman to assist Texas in her struggle for freedom. The company arrived in Texas in January, 1836 and left Nacogdoches February 29th for Gonzales. On March 12, 1836 the army was reorganized at Gonzales. Captain Sherman was elected lieutenant colonel of the 1st Regiment of Texas Volunteers, William Wood succeeding him as Captain. Mr. Sylvester was made second sergeant and color bearer of the company, and participated as such at San Jacinto. It was he who carried the only flag flown by the Texans at San Jacinto. Not only this but it was he, more than any other man, who effected the capture of General Santa Anna on April 22nd. This claim was disputed in after years but the record stands for itself. To begin with Mr. Sylvester's service record may be seen in the archives of the State Library at Austin, Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 1046. In it Captain Wood certifies that Sylvester enlisted December 13, 1835; was second sergeant and color bearer, participated in the engagements on April 20th and 21st and "was the individual who took the person of Santa Anna. He further states that Sylvester was honorably discharged June 18, 1836. At San Augustine, August 3, 1836, General Sam Houston personally presented Mr. Sylvester with a printed pamphlet containing the names of the men who had fought at San Jacinto. On the back of it wrote:

Battle of San Jacinto James Austin Sylvester
Hero and Flag Bearer of the Battle of San Jacinto, Capturer of "Napoleon of the West" Santa Anna From the Cavalcade of Jackson County by I.T. Taylor James Austin Sylvester was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1807. After reaching manhood he moved to Kentucky. Captain Sidney Sherman raised a company of volunteers to aid Texas in her struggle for independence. James A. Sylvester joined this company of volunteers on December 18, 1835, at Newport, Kentucky. Captain Sherman's Company left Nacogdoches February 29, 1836, for Gonzales, but it seems that Sylvester had preceded them, for on January 10th he was commissioned a captain in the reserve army of the Texas Republic by Henry Smith at San Felipe de Austin. The original commission is in the Rosenberg Library, Galveston, Texas. They were given a farewell reception at the home of one of the leading citizens of Cincinnati the night before Colonel Sherman and his men left for Texas. At this reception the ladies of Newport presented the company of volunteers with a beautiful battle flag. The presentation was made by Mrs. Sherman herself. The flag was beautiful blue silk, bordered with gold fringe. In the center was painted a female figure representing the Goddess of Liberty and the words, "Liberty or Death
