Owen Massey Sylvester, poetaster Delivered before the Oxford University Invariant Society by Owen Massey on 16 February 1999 The intersection of mathematics and poetry is not large. For a long time I'd thought it confined to the limerick which goes: A graduate student at Trinity Computed the square of infinity But it gave him the fidgets To write down the digits So he dropped maths and took up divinity. At last year's Members' Papers, Nick Fortescue recited a poem by Coleridge which was called ' A mathematical problem '. This was a geometrical construction in rather random metre, and basically confirmed that mathematics is no subject for poetry and poetry no form in which to write mathematics. I hope my talk this evening will give further evidence of this. James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) was a Victorian algebraist who disagreed with me: The incongruity between advanced mathematics and verse composition is more apparent than real - Mathematic commencing as a practical art, thence passing into the form of a science, having again emerged into an art of a higher order - a fine art - plastic in the hands of the Mathematician, obedient to and taking shape from his will, and almost admitting of the free play of fancy upon it ... Sylvester was educated at Cambridge, where he came second in the mathematical Tripos but couldn't receive his degree because of his Jewish faith. He became a professor at University College, London, which was founded in part to combat the legal religious discrimination of Oxford and Cambridge. However, after the requirement to subscribe to the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England was dropped fifty years later, Sylvester became the first Jew to hold a Professorship at Oxford, which was the office of Savilian Professor of Geometry. The title is rather misleading because Sylvester always concentrated his mathematical efforts on algebra. He worked hand in hand with

Taylor James Austin Sylvester was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1807. After reaching manhood he moved to Kentucky. Captain Sidney Sherman raised a company of volunteers to aid Texas in her struggle for independence. James A. Sylvester joined this company of volunteers on December 18, 1835, at Newport, Kentucky. Captain Sherman's Company left Nacogdoches February 29, 1836, for Gonzales, but it seems that Sylvester had preceded them, for on January 10th he was commissioned a captain in the reserve army of the Texas Republic by Henry Smith at San Felipe de Austin. The original commission is in the Rosenberg Library, Galveston, Texas. They were given a farewell reception at the home of one of the leading citizens of Cincinnati the night before Colonel Sherman and his men left for Texas. At this reception the ladies of Newport presented the company of volunteers with a beautiful battle flag. The presentation was made by Mrs. Sherman herself. The flag was beautiful blue silk, bordered with gold fringe. In the center was painted a female figure representing the Goddess of Liberty and the words, "Liberty or Death

Parshall, University of Virginia ABSTRACT James Joseph Sylvester, the flamboyant, nineteenth-century, British Jewish mathematician, is best remembered today as one of the founders of invariant theory, as an early contributor to the theory of algebras, and as a combinatorialist. His mathematical research took place, however, in the context of Victorian Britain (and, from 1876 to 1883, of what one might call Victorian America), and his ability to do that research was affected in profound ways by Victorian attitudes toward Judaism. BSHM Abstracts - J Jackson, Myles, ‘Natural and artificial budgets: accounting for Goethe’s economy of nature’, Science in context The notion of the budget was crucial to both Goethe’s administration of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and his investigation of nature. Nature’s budgets were a heuristic tool for elucidating natural processes—and could be applied to the realm of social order. Law, order, balance and budget formed the basis of his financial reform of the duchy. Jagger, Graham, ‘Joseph Moxon, FRS, and the Royal Society’, Notes and records of the Royal Society Moxon was elected FRS in 1678, perhaps the only tradesman to be elected during the first forty years of the Society’s existence. But after the appointment of a rival as printer to the Society in 1681, he took no further part in the RS’s activities, seemingly disappointed though in fact his Fellowship would have barred him from such an office of profit.
