Last revision: May 27, 2001 The term ULTRAMETRIC was coined in 1944 by M. Krasner, according to an Internet web page. The terms UMBRAL CALCULUS and UMBRAL NOTATION were coined by James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897). UNBIASED. See biased. The term UNCONDITIONAL CONVERGENCE (of a continued fraction) was coined by Alfred Pringsheim (1850-1941). UNDECAGON. Earlier terms for an 11-sided polygon, hendecagon and endecagon, are found in English in 1704 in Lexicon technicum, or an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences, by John Harris (OED2). Undecagon is found in English in 1728 in Chambers' Cyclopedia. UNDECIDABLE (On Formally Undecidable Propositions in Principia Mathematica and Related Systems). UNGULA appears in 1710 in Lexicon technicum, or an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences, by John Harris: " Ungula, in Geometry, is the Section of a Cylinder cut off by a Plane, which passes obliquely thro' the Plane of the Basse, and part of the Cylindric Surface" (OED2). J. J. Sylvester (1814-1897)
1997 marks the 100-th anniversary of the death of the British algebraist James Joseph Sylvester (born September 3, 1814; died March 15, 1897).
This portrait of Sylvester is the frontispiece to Vol. 4 of The Collected Mathematical Papers of James Joseph Sylvester , edited by H. F. Baker, Cambridge University Press 1912, and is used with permission. Sylvester had a rather colorful careerhe was a published poet as well as a mathematician. A very interesting account of Sylvester's life is to be found in H. F. Baker's biographical sketch in the above-mentioned volume. Baker remarks there: One rises from the task of editing Sylvester's mathematical writings for the Press, with a feeling that here was a great personality as well as a remarkable mathematician, wide and accurate in thought, deep and sensitive in feeling, and inspired with a great faith in things spiritual. Other sources for Sylvester's life include:
