When Nobel Laureate Enrico Fermi was asked if he believed in extraterrestrials, he replied, " They are already here...they are called Hungarians! " Can you help support our work? Please CLICK IMAGE TO DONATE! Did you know that the developers of the atomic bomb; the holograph; moon rover; Model T Ford; and the fathers of binary code, BASIC and computer programming; the atomic bomb, nuclear engineering; the California wine industry; the U.S. Cavalry; the Model T Ford; matches; color television; full-length motion pictures; the carburetor; the Zeppelin; the automatic gearbox; the moon rover; Intel Corporation; and of the U.S. aerospace industry are all Hungarian-Americans? And what about Joseph Pulitzer, of "Pulitzer Prize" fame? There's much more to his story. And can you believe there was a Hungarian Emperor of Madagascar? This list is far from inclusive, but exemplifies, along with the other sections, the Hungarian Genius! Many of these will surprise you. They sure surprised me. The number of these incredible people is astounding given the size of the Hungarian population in the entire world is around 20 million. I have received submissions from all over the world (see " Special Thanks ").

Stormer, Murray and Fleury Named to National Academy of Sciences WASHINGTON (April 27, 1999) The National Academy of Sciences today announced the election of 60 new members and 15 foreign associates including Cherry Ann Murray of Bell Labs, Horst Stormer of Bell Labs and Columbia University, and Paul Fleury, formerly of Bell Labs in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Cherry Murray Murray and Fleury are two of 60 new members, and Stormer is one of 15 new foreign associates. Murray is the director of the Physical Research Lab at Bell Labs, and Stormer is adjunct physics director at Bell Labs and holds a joint appointment as professor of physics and applied physics at Columbia University. Stormer also shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics with two former Bell Labs physicists, Robert C. Laughlin and Daniel C. Tsui, for their work on the fractional quantum Hall effect Fleury, formerly a director at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J., is now dean and professor at the School of Engineering, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. The NAS election was held this morning during the business session of the 136th annual meeting of the Academy. Election to membership in the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a U.S. scientist or engineer. Those elected today bring the total number of active members to 1,825.

Campus News: Mathematician elected to NAS
From Wisconsin Week, April 28, 1999 (Vol. XIV, No. 8) Mathematician elected to NAS The National Academy of Sciences has elected mathematics professor Richard A. Askey to membership in the prestigious organization. Sixty U.S. scientists and 15 foreign associates were elected to membership Tuesday, April 27, during the business session of the 136th annual meeting of the academy, a private organization of scientists established by congressional act of incorporation in 1863. Election to membership is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a U.S. scientist or engineer. Askey is the Gabor Szego Professor of Mathematics. His areas of interest include harmonic analysis and special function. He is also known as an inspiring teacher and an ardent proponent of mathematics education, as well as a student of the history of mathematics. Askey joined the UW-Madison faculty in 1963. He has written more than 150 papers and several books. Askey's honors include fellowships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also is an honorary member of the Indian Academy of Sciences. Home UW Home Archives Search ... Feedback

Cours d'analyse
From the reviews: "The work is one of the real classics of this century; it has had much influence on teaching, on research in several branches of hard analysis, particularly complex function theory, and it has been an essential indispensable source book for those seriously interested in mathematical problems. These volumes contain many extraordinary problems and sequences of problems, mostly from some time past, well worth attention today and tomorrow. Written in the early twenties by two young mathematicians of outstanding talent, taste, breadth, perception, perseverence, and pedagogical skill, this work broke new ground in the teaching of mathematics and how to do mathematical research. (Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society) Contents Infinite Series and Infinite Sequences.
