A Reflection on the Work of Tait and Kelvin
Unable to reproduce Tait’s smoke rings (due to lecture room smoke-detectors), Professor Moffat demonstrated the creation of vortex rings in water using coloured dyes and went on to show how more complex interactions can occur. He noted that Kelvin’s interest in the subject was motivated by his desire to develop an atomic theory in terms of vortices "in the aether". Kelvin recognised that knotted vortex filaments (or tubes of very small cross-section) would permanently retain their knotted form, and that the characteristic frequencies of oscillations of these forms about their equilibrium states (if such existed) might provide a fundamental explanation for the known spectroscopic properties of matter. Professor Moffat concluded his lecture with descriptions of more recent mathematical studies in this area, including his own work on the concept of helicity.

THE JAMES CLERK MAXWELL FOUNDATION The James Clerk Maxwell Foundation has essentially two functions, one charitable and the other commemorative. Its general purposes are outlined in the first two items of its Deed of Declaration of Trust, dated 12 January 1977: "1. To promote, encourage, and advance the study of, research into, and the dissemination of knowledge of and relating to physics, chemistry and physical chemistry in all their aspects and in particular, but without prejudice to the foregoing generality, colloids and interfaces. "2. To commemorate, by publishing or contributing towards or promoting the publication in any way (but not with a view to profit) of scientific or educational books, films, papers, essays, monographs and/or lectures on or relating to physics and chemistry or any aspect thereof, the said James Clerk Maxwell and any other person or persons who may in the opinion of the Trustees have contributed significantly to the advancement of physics or chemistry." The charitable function of the Foundation was its only concern during the years 1977-93. Grants were made to senior scientists (professors) to attend meetings abroad and to junior scientists (graduates and undergraduates) to assist their studies or researches. As the Foundation is a modest one, these grants were not large, but even so were often essential for the purposes of the recipients. With the acquisition of the house in which Clerk Maxwell was born, in the New Town of Edinburgh, the work of the Foundation entered a new phase in which its commemorative function predominated. Once the current mortgage is discharged, the Foundation will be able to execute its charitable function to a greater degree than is possible at present.

m.t.kelly@qub.ac.uk Description: This collection consists of a selection of scientific papers and correspondence by and addressed to Chemist and Physicist, Thomas Andrews (1813-85), chiefly written in his own hand or copied by his daughters, Elizabeth Andrews and Mary K. Andrews, and forming part of the documents used in the preparation of 'The Scientific Papers of the Late Thomas Andrews. With a Memoir by P.G. Tait and A. Crum Brown' (London, 1889). The material appears to be organised according to his daughters' original arrangement in preparation for the 1889 book and includes a series of 10 scientific memoirs presented to Andrews by their authors, notebooks from lectures attended by Andrews on astronomy, physics and chemistry (c 1828-c 1840), correspondence with a range of academics including Michael Faraday, Sir Edward Sabine and Sir George Gabriel Stokes on scientific problems (1842-72), papers presented by Andrews to the Belfast Literary and Philosophical Society (c1836-c1874), and reports, drafts, notes and drawings relating to his research into the gaseous state of matter. Strengths: The Thomas Andrews Manuscript Collection is notable for its reflection of the work and interests of a reputable 19th century academic and scientist.

In 1828 George Green (1793-1841) discovered Green's Functions, which describe the basic Harmonic Mathematics of Physics . Green was a self-taught mathematician who worked in his family mill. Green's functions can be used with respect to any Division Algebra . At the time Green discovered them, the only Division Algebras known were the Real and Complex Numbers. Green used his Green's Functions to describe the Potential Theory of Electromagnetism. In 1831 James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) was born. In 1843 , the Quaternion Division Algebra was discovered by William Rowan Hamilton In 1844 , N-dimensional Exterior and Interior Geometric Products were discovered by Hermann Grassmann In 1845 , the Octonion Division Algebra was discovered by John Graves and Arthur Cayley (1821-1895). Cayley, who practiced law to make money so that he could pursue mathematics, also invented Matrix Algebra Also in 1845 William Kingdon Clifford (1845-1879) was born.

James Clerk Maxwell Introduction James Clerk Maxwell is regarded by most modern physicists as the scientist of the 19th century who had the greatest influence on 20th-century physics; he is ranked with Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein for the fundamental nature of his contributions. In 1931, at the 100th anniversary of Maxwell's birth, Einstein described the change in the conception of reality in physics that resulted from Maxwell's work as "the most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton." The concept of electromagnetic radiation originated with Maxwell, and his field equations, based on Michael Faraday's observations of the electric and magnetic lines of force, paved the way for Einstein's special theory of relativity, which established the equivalence of mass and energy. Maxwell's ideas also ushered in the other major innovation of 20th-century physics, the quantum theory. His description of electromagnetic radiation led to the development (according to classical theory) of the ultimately unsatisfactory law of heat radiation, which prompted Max Planck 's formulation of the quantum hypothesisi.e., the theory that radiant-heat energy is emitted only in finite amounts, or quanta. The interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter, integral to Planck's hypothesis, in turn has played a central role in the development of the theory of the structure of atoms and molecules.
