By Bethany Tilton, Age: 12, Fort Worth, Texas, United States
William Henry Fox Talbot was an English archaeologist, linguist, photo chemist, and mathematician, who lived during the 19th century. He was born February 11, 1800, and died on September 17, 1877. He is best known as the inventor of the negative – positive process, a process used in photography. There are many names for this process, one being the photogenic drawing. The way it works, is first, you coat drawing paper with a salt solution, then after it dries, add a solution of silver nitrate, and by placing a fern, leaf, or piece of lace, and leaving it in the sun, you would obtain an image. Talbot made one of the earliest known surviving photographic negative, while he was in Britain, in the late summer of 1835, a photogenic negative of a latticed window, in the south galley of his home, Lacock Abbey. He established the basis upon which modern photography is based. He perfected his process in 1841.
“…I do not profess to have perfected an art, but to have commenced one, the limits of which it is not possible at present exactly to ascertain. I only claim to have based this art on a secure foundation.”

W.H. Fox Talbot William Henry Fox Talbot was born in England in 1800, and after his death in 1877 he was known as the "Father of Photography." A scientist and inventor, Talbot invented the negative-positive photographic paper process. By employing the camera obscura and developing a successful photo-chemical process for sensitizing paper, Talbot formed the scientific foundation for the development of modern photography. Talbot's scientific interests in botany and the natural phenomena of the world led to the first "photogenic drawings" or photograms as they are referred to today. J.P. Ward states, "For Talbot photography was a manifestation of the wonders of nature, as well as a working tool and a unique recording system." Talbot's accomplishments greatly influenced the future of photography as a scientific and artistic tool.

A man of enormously versatile intelligence, he invented the "photogenic drawing" process in 1834. From 1841 on he patented his numerous processes for making negatives and positive prints, called calotypes and later talbotypes. His patents threatened to impede the technical progress of the medium and Talbot was forced to release his processes. His relationships with other early photographers and photographic inventors were very bitter. Talbot wrote The Pencil of Nature (1844), one of the first books illustrated with photographs. Interested also in archaeology, he was one of the first to decipher the cuneiform inscriptions at Nineveh.

Lime .. 1845 Calvert Jones Calvert Jones self portrait In the mid 19th Century, Swansea was a very significant sea port, exporting 60% of the world demand for the most important metal of the day - copper. It was a fertile age for scientific innovation and discovery. When William Henry Fox Talbot developed the precursor of modern photography, an eminent Swansea chemist, John Talbot Dillwyn Llewelyn, used his scientific expertise to advance the new craft of "painting with light" further. John Dillwyn Talbot Llewelyn was the son of LW Llewelyn, a wealthy Welsh industrialist and distinguished botanist. His great great grandfather, William Dillwyn, settled in America in the late 17th Century where he became one of the country's first Quakers. John Dillwyn married Emma Thomasina Talbot , who was a first cousin of William Henry Fox Talbot. Emma was similarly enthusiastic about photography, and processed all her husband's prints. Llewelyn developed a keen interest in the new art form of photography from its earliest days and experimented alongside Antoine Claudette, the inventor of the daguerreotype process that employed a metal plate coated with light sensitive chemicals. In 1842 John Dillwyn Llewelyn produced botanical daguerreotypes at Kew Gardens, London.

New York New York "A Civilian Occupation: The Politics of Israeli Architecture" Öyvind Fahlström "Video Acts" ... Roberto Cuoghi "A Civilian Occupation: The Politics of Israeli Architecture" STOREFRONT FOR ART AND ARCHITECTURE
February 12 - April 13 In the newsprint pamphlet that accompanies "A Civilian Occupation," Israeli arcitects Rafi Segal and Eyal Weizman declare, "Throughout the last century, a different kind of warfare has been radically transforming the landscapes of Israel and Palestine. In it, the mundane elements of planning and architecture have been conscripted as tactical tools in the Israeli state strategy, seeking national and geopolitical objectives in the organization of space." It should come as no surprise, then, that the Israel Association of United Architects, who originally commissioned the project, yanked their support before Segal and Weizman could present their work at the World Congress of Architecture in Berlin last July. Elaborated through photographs, maps, and a black-and-white video, "A Civilian Occupation" is a damning study of the politics of "settlement." The architects show how ancient techniques (seizing the nearest strategic hilltop) and modern ones (print advertising to entice settlers) have been combined to accomplish what is, euphemisms notwithstanding, an imperialist campaign. The "politics of space" is a favored theoretical construct, but here Segal and Weizman have hit the mother lode of practical application. Invoking history, religious fundamentalism, and landscape-as-battlefield, the project is, to say the least, apropos. Somewhere between Conceptual art and pure documentary, "A Civilian Occupation" offers a fuller and more complex view of a situation that the media tends to represent in fragmentary form.
