Re-sizing cape
Submitted by lance on 07/22/2002. Hi guys,
I've got a problem I hope you can tell me what I did wrong..... i asked a while ago about the re-sizing of a cape that had been streched long and the neck measurements were way too small. I had an article sent to me about the soak in salt water for 1.5 hrs and sweat the cape in a fridge overnight then with the blunt end of a file working from the center line out to the cut edge you can actually gain about 4 to 5 inches and bring it back into shape. Well I'm here to tell you that I either did something wrong or the person that sent this is not a HACKsidermist . I've got slip real bad. It did exactly as it was supposed to . It opened right up. but now the slip problem .... I think I can still get him mounted but don't know about the slippage ? Do you guys think it will be ok once it dries? do I have any other options ? just need some advice ?
Thanks Lance! Return to Deer Taxidermy Category Menu

Paul Tannery was a brother of Jules Tannery whose biography is also given in this archive. Since Paul Tannery is famous as an historian of mathematics it is particularly fitting that we should give details of his life and work in this archive dedicated to the history of mathematics. Paul Tannery's parents were Delphin Tannery, who was an engineer working for the French railways, and Opportune Perrier. Delphin and Opportune Tannery had three children, the eldest being a daughter while the second oldest was Paul and Jules Tannery was the youngest. Delphin Tannery's job with the railways involved him moving around the country depending on where railways were being constructed. The family moved from Mantes to Redon in Ille-et-Vilaine in the Brittany region of northwestern France. He later worked at Mondeville close to Caen. His parents who were very keen to see their sons achieve great things with their education so they were delighted when, after completing his secondary education in 1860, Tannery sat the entrance examinations in science for the Ecole Polytechnique. Having attained one of the highest possible grades in both examination he entered the school, taking a wide range of courses in science, mathematics, technology and classical subjects such as Hebrew. He graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1863 and entered the Ecole d'Application des Tabacs. He would spend the rest of his working life involved with the tobacco industry.

    The Paul Sweet Tannery 1840-1874
During the last half of the nineteenth century, one of the most important industries in Santa Cruz County was the manufacture of leather. The first known commercial tannery established in the county and in California was the Paul Sweet Tannery in Scotts Valley. The quality of leather from this area was superior to any in the world because of the ready availability of hides and the abundant supply of tan oak trees, which yielded the best kind of bark for tanning. The Paul Sweet Tannery was located on twelve acres near where Lockwood Lane and Mount Hermon Road intersect. In approximately 1840 Francisco LaJeunesse, a French Canadian trapper, began tanning hides on that site. The land, a part of the Rancho San Augustin, was owned by naturalized Mexican citizen Joseph L. Majors. Eventually, LaJeunesse left to join Captain John Fremont, leaving the tannery to Paul Sweet in 1843. At the time Paul Sweet operated the tannery, it consisted of eight vats, made of split redwood logs. The logs were dug out in an oval shape and measured five feet wide and two and one half feet deep. The hides were soaked in these vats which contained the tan oak bark solution until the air was loosened. The bark itself was ground by a large horse-driven wooden wheel, grinding about one half cord of bark per day. The tannery had the capability of processing about 200 steer hides and 300 deer hides annually. In 1846 Sweet joined the Bear Flag battalion selling the tannery business to Pauline Weaver and Pruitt Saint Clair. In 1847 William Blackburn bought the tannery. He brought in Richard C. Kirby to run it for him, paying him $75.00 per month. In 1852 Kirby married and moved to Santa Cruz. Blackburn sold out his interest at that time. Kirby had also worked his own tannery in the Squabble Hollow or Glen Canyon area. He is most famous, however, for his large tannery in Santa Cruz.
