The Franke-Gricksch 'Resettlement Action Report': Anatomy of a Fabrication
Brian A. Renk It was long presumed that the alleged German policy to exterminate the Jews of Europe was set in motion by a direct, if not a written order, from Adolf Hitler. This purported order was cited in the main Nuremberg trial a 1945-46 and in subsequent trials of "Nazi war criminals." Although documentary evidence for the "Führer Order" has remained elusive, its existence was taken for granted by exterminationist historians until 1977. In that year the British historian David Irving provoked considerable discussion in the historical establishment with the publication of his Hitler's War . Irving argued, on the basis of a painstaking study of the documentary record as well as exhaustive interviews with surviving members of Hitler's entourage, that the German leader did not order mass killings of Jews, and that he did not learn about an extermination policy until, perhaps, 1943.[1] Anglo-Jewish historian Gerald Fleming, now reader emeritus at the University of Surrey (England), decided to deal with this problem-and specifically to respond to Irving's provocative 1977 thesis-by setting to work on a book that would prove conclusively that Hitler did indeed order the extermination of European Jewry. After several years of research and writing, he presented his case in

An Intensive Weekend Program 8 Credit Hours You MUST be present at the first class to be considered registered. All class sessions will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. WebCT participation will be a required part of this class.
Program Description: Is health care a right or a privilege? When an individual has an injury or disease how is it socially defined? How has the physical functioning of the human body been interpreted by the scientific community? How have these interpretations shaped the type and quality of medical treatment available? What is the impact of a person's gender, race, ethnicity, class and sexual orientation on the quality of the health care they receive? How does our cultural perception of healing, illness and wellness impact our relationship to our health care system? This two-quarter course is designed for students who wish to enhance their understanding of the social, cultural, and psychological factors that have influenced health and health care in the United States. The focus of the 1 st quarter will be making meaning of how we define and construct health care in our society. We will examine the US system of medical care from a sociological perspective; particular emphasis will be placed on the structure and organization of health care institutions and societal response to problems of illness and disease. The program will acquaint students to the socio-behavioral dynamics that are a vital part of health care, healing and the experience of illness. A central question for this quarter will be: How does our social frameworks and structures effect our expectations of health and our health care delivery system?

In his studies of early childhood, high school, and university classrooms in Silicon Valley, Larry Cuban found that students and teachers use the new technologies far less in the classroom than they do at home, and that teachers who use computers for instruction do so infrequently and unimaginatively. Computers can be useful when teachers sufficiently understand the technology themselves, believe it will enhance learning, and have the power to shape their own curricula. But these conditions can't be met without a broader and deeper commitment to public education beyond preparing workers. More attention, Cuban says, needs to be paid to the civic and social goals of schooling, goals that make the question of how many computers are in classrooms trivial.

Laszlo Tauber, donor to Holocaust causes, dies at 87
ALEXANDRA J. WALL Bulletin Staff A Washington D.C.-area philanthropist who survived the Holocaust and gave millions of dollars to Holocaust-related causes $1 million of it to the Holocaust Center of Northern California died at his home in Potomac, Md., on July 28. Dr. Laszlo Nandor Tauber was 87. Born in Hungary in 1915, Tauber was 29 when he was made chief of surgery at the International Red Cross Hospital in Budapest. The hospital continued to serve Jews under extraordinarily difficult conditions after the Nazis occupied Hungary. Tauber was never deported himself, most likely because his hospital was affiliated with the Red Cross. He was able to care for many Jews in the hospital, as well as provide some with forged papers that delayed their deportation. Tauber came to the United States in 1947, opened a private practice and taught at George Washington University. He also began dabbling in real estate. Starting with small buildings, he then moved to constructing office buildings, which he then leased to the federal government. His estimated worth reached $1 billion, and he became one of the government's largest private landlords. In 1965, he founded his own hospital, Jefferson Memorial in Alexandria, Va., where he was medical director and chairman of the surgery department.
