Descriptive Biography J ohn Thompson's support for women's rights is only one aspect of the passion for fairness and justice that informed not just his ideals, but his actions as well. That the reputation of Canada's fourth prime minister has since sunk into obscurity is due to the unfortunate brevity of his term of office.

WINNER OF THE FOUNDATIONS OF POLITICAL THEORY AWARD
America's finest eighteenth-century student of political science, John Adams is also the least studied of the Revolution's key figures. By the time he became our second president, no American had written more about our government and not even Jefferson or Madison had read as widely about questions of human nature, natural right, political organization, and constitutional construction. Yet this staunch constitutionalist is perceived by many as having become reactionary in his later years and his ideas have been largely disregarded. In the first major work on Adams's political thought in over thirty years, C. Bradley Thompson takes issue with the notion that Adams's thought is irrelevant to the development of American ideas. Focusing on Adams's major writings, Thompson elucidates and reevaluates his political and constitutional thought by interpreting it within the tradition of political philosophy stretching from Plato to Montesquieu. From these pages emerges a new John Adams. In reexamining his political thought, Thompson reconstructs the contours and influences of Adams's mental universe, the ideas he challenged, the problems he considered central to constitution-making, and the methods of his reasoning. Skillfully blending history and political science, Thompson's work shows how the spirit of liberty animated Adams's life and reestablishes this forgotten Revolutionary as an independent and important thinker.

Sir John Thompson - Conservative Born November 10, 1845
Died December 12, 1894 Prime Minister December 5, 1892 - December 12, 1894 Thompson, from Nova Scotia, seemed like the perfect choice to take over the fortunes of the Conservatives. Although reluctant to do so when MacDonald died, he had taken effective control of the government as the Minister of Justice and the government leader in the House of Commons. He quickly asserted his leadership over the Conservative agenda and when Abbot resigned he felt ready to become Prime Minister. He had originally made his reputation in the House when he out up a fiery defense of MacDonald's decision to hand Louis Riel. Manitoba also played a big role in his Prime Minister ship due to the fact that once the Privy Council had upheld the Manitoba school law, the next questions was whether the Federal government had the right to overturn the law. Thompson referred this question to the privy council and sat back waiting for their decision. The Liberal attacked this as a stalling tactic but Thompson could not be pushed. Although relatively young, at age 50, Thompson was invited to become a member of the privy council and when he went too London to be sworn in, he dropped day at the luncheon in Windsor Castle. The Conservatives had lost their best leader and their best chance for the next election.

John Thompson studied at Yale University, receiving his B.A. in 1955. He went to the University of Chicago to undertake research and completed his doctorate in 1959. His doctoral thesis, entitled A Proof that a Finite Group with a Fixed-Point-Free Automorphism of Prime Order is Nilpotent was supervised by MacLane . In fact his doctoral thesis solved one of the conjectures of Frobenius which had remained unsolved for around 60 years. Thompson's thesis, as is clear from its title, proved Frobenius 's conjecture that a finite group with an automorphism which does not fix any group element is necessarily nilpotent. The solution of Frobenius 's conjecture was not done by simply pushing the existing techniques further than others had done; rather it was achieved by introducing many highly original ideas which were to lead to many developments in group theory. Thompson was an assistant at Harvard University in 1961-62, then, in 1962, he was appointed professor at the University of Chicago. In 1968 Thompson accepted a fellowship at University College, Cambridge in England. He was appointed Rouse

John Thompson Position:
Head Coach
Alma Mater:
Princeton '88
John Thompson, who was raised by one Hall-of-Fame coach and played for another in college, coached Princeton to the 2001 Ivy League championship after being named the Cappon-Green head coach of men’s basketball at Princeton University on Sept. 6, 2000. The 35-year-old Thompson, a 1988 Princeton graduate, replaced Bill Carmody, who left to become the head coach at Northwestern. Inheriting a team that lost five potential returning starters prior to this season, Thompson nevertheless guided Princeton to the league championship and the NCAA tournament in his first season as a head coach. In his five years as an assistant under Pete Carril and Carmody, Thompson helped Princeton to a record of 114-31, a Top 10 national ranking, three Ivy League championships, five consecutive postseason appearances and one of the most memorable wins in NCAA tournament history with Princeton’s 43-41 victory over UCLA in 1996. Princeton averaged 23 wins per year during his tenure as an assistant; Princeton had a total of three seasons with at least 23 wins in the 95 years of the program prior to that.

Research in my laboratory is on the ways in which coevolution between species organizes the earth's biodiversity. My long-term goal is to understand how coevolving interactions are genetically and ecologically organized across broad geographic landscapes and how they connect biological communities. Our work includes studies of species interactions across many types of environments, from relatively pristine landscapes to others that are becoming increasingly fragmented and modified by introduced taxa. Most of our empirical work uses interactions between insects and plants (herbivores and plants; pollinators and flowers), because these are among the most diverse groups of organisms on earth. We use a wide range of ecological, genetic, molecular, and evolutionary approaches to study the dynamics of coevolution. Current Research We are currently evaluating the geographic structure and evolutionary dynamics of a variety of species interactions distributed throughout western North America; We are asking how

MIKE HARDING TALKS TO LINDA THOMPSON Originally broadcast 24.07.02 In the mid-eighties, Linda Thompson vanished from a scene in which she had been a leading light. Acute stress had caused a rare syndrome known as hysterical dysphonia, effectively ending her singing career. Seventeen years on, she's back to resume her status as folk-rock diva with her own songs now providing the vehicle for her exceptional vocal talents. Born in London in 1948, Linda (then Pettifer) moved to Glasgow at the age of six with her theatrically-trained mother and TV repairman father. An early interest in folk music was temporarily halted in 1967 when she headed back to London to study modern languages, but the call of the music was too great: dropping out after four months, she took a day job as a jingle singer and hit the local coffee-houses. It was there that she met the core personnel - later icons - of the scene, becoming part of the complex group of musician/friends/partners that revolved around Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Richard Thompson, John Renbourn and producer Joe Boyd.
