Jan Tinbergen 's father was a schoolmaster. Jan attended the Hogere Bugerschool in The Hague. This was a special type of school which was designed for children of middle class parents who were aspiring to better their status. These schools allowed entry to the university system after passing additional examinations in Latin and Greek and this Tinbergen did entering the University of Leiden in 1921. He studied mathematics and theoretical physics at the University of Leiden and was most influenced there by Ehrenfest . Writing in the newspaper NRC-Handelsblad in 1987 he said of his teachers at Leiden:- To Ehrenfest I owe a great deal. I studied physics at a time when a number of fascinating persons were there together. Ehrenfest would not instruct as such, as he preferred dialogue. Thanks to him I could participate in discussions with Albert Einstein . Also Kamerling Onnes

Jan Tinbergen. The Tinbergen Institute takes its name from Jan Tinbergen(19031994), equally famous as a scholar and a public figure.
http://www.tinbergen.nl/about/tinberg.html
Jan Tinbergen
As a socialist, Tinbergen firmly believed that optimal economic and social conditions can be achieved by rational government policies. In later years - after 1960 - he applied these ideas to the economic world order, but to his disappointment his proposals met with little success. He continued to work and publish until his death, and died as a revered and widely honoured scholar and public figure at the age of 91. Reference Return

Jan Tinbergen
Jan Tinbergen (1903-1994)
On April 12, 2003 it is hundred years ago that Jan Tinbergen was born. He was, together with Ragnar Frisch, the first Nobel laureate in economics. During forty years (from 1933 till 1973) Tinbergen worked at the Netherlands School of Economics which merged with the Medical Faculty Rotterdam to become the Erasmus University Rotterdam in his retirement year 1973. Jan Tinbergen started his academic career as a theoretical physicist. But, still as a student in Leiden, he was appalled by the conditions of poverty in which the local population lived. And, thus, wishing to make a contribution to the combat against such social evils, he decided in 1929, after his graduation and having obtained a doctorate in mathematics and physics, to become an economist. This decision is characteristic of Tinbergen and his attitude towards science. The hundreds of articles he wrote and the pathbreaking contributions he made to economic science were always inspired by social problems he observed. For example, during the great depression of the 1930s, he worked on business cycles and, together with others, laid the foundations for econometrics. In 1969 his contribution earned him, with co-laureate Ragnar Frisch, the first Nobel Prize in economics. Other examples are his pioneering work in economic policy and development planning. During his long life Tinbergen inspired many people. To his students and colleagues he was a gifted teacher who regularly offered remarkably lucid and refreshing insights and who appeared to be capable of multiple contributions to the field of economics. Others admired his compassion with the poor and his active participation in social movements. He deeply influenced the lives of many.
