Physicist, engineer , and inventor of the Dolby Noise Reduction Systems. Dolby is famous for innovations ranging from the high-quality cassettes we use in our car stereos to the latest digital surround sound in movie theaters. As a high school student he went to work part time for Ampex Corporation. While still in college, he joined the small team of Ampex engineers dedicated to inventing the world's first practical video tape recorder, the Ampex VTR (1956). Dolby founded his own company, Dolby Laboratories, in 1965. His first development was Dolby A-type noise reduction, an audio compression and expansion which dramatically reduced background hiss in professional tape recording with no discernible side-effects. The vast number of clergymen, mostly uncles and cousins, over the last three hundred years only goes to show that there is a lot of truth in the saying that younger sons had to go into some profession. But the number still seems remarkable to me.

4 timmar i veckan under andra halvan av terminen. Litteratur: E. M. Edwards, Riemann's Zeta Function (Academic Press 58, 1974). Edward C. Titchmarsh, The Theory of the Riemann Zeta-Function, (Clarendon, 1987). Vi studerar zeta-funktionen som ger information om primtalen genom Euler-identiteten. Taetheten av primtalen beskrivs av Hadamards och de la Valle-Poussins primtalssats. Feltermens storlek är avhängig av Riemanns hypotes. Kvadratfria talens taethet. Selbergs spårformel i enkla fall. Om litteraturen: Det finns flera böcker som innehåller motsvarande material. Studenterna får gärna använda annan litteratur, i den mån den är ekvivalent med ovanstående. Edwards bok är lättare att läsa än Titchmarsh, men tyvärr out of print. Jag kommer (åtminstone i början) att följa Edwards bok. Visst material hämtas även ur H. S. Zuckerman, H. L. Montgomery, An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers (Wiley 1991).

Theory of Functions > Customer Review #1: Many detailed problems, but dated exposition
Be warned that this book references Hardys "Pure Mathematics" regularly. This book is principally a collection of results in complex analysis. The upside is that there are many problems developed in detail and the author sincerely tries to motivate every topic. The downside is that the language is so dated that often topics are excessively difficult to digest. I would not recommend this as a first book in complex functions theory. Its more useful as a supplement to other more modern courses.
