KING EDWARD VI SCHOOL NEWSLETTER ISSUE 31 MARCH 2002 Dear Parents This has been a most unusual term. Not only has it been extremely short, but the Ofsted inspection in late January has impinged upon almost every school activity. We have had to postpone various events, and re-schedule others. We even had to cancel the Newsletter, which is published each half-term, through Ofsted pressure. I do hope that this bumper edition will make up for that, and will contain information about what has happened during this term. The preparation for the Ofsted inspection involved the staff and Governors in meetings with the Registered Inspector, Mr Akram Khan, detailed written planning and self evaluation, and much thought about the nature of the inspection itself. We were indeed fortunate that Mr Khan and his team approached their task with the utmost professionalism and consideration for the school. They were in school from the Monday to the Thursday, observed 187 lessons, interviewed a high proportion of staff, spoke formally and informally to many of the boys, and gained a very accurate sense of what the school is all about. Their report, of which you have received a summary, is extremely complimentary, and it highlights many aspects of the school of which we can be very proud. I do hope that you will obtain a copy of the full report, or that you will access the full report on the Ofsted website – www.ofsted.gov.uk - when it is published there in a few weeks time. The main issues that we must address relate very largely to the use of ICT in our teaching, and the assessment of pupils’ competence. There are also questions about the coverage of the Design Technology programme of study at key stage 3, about homework, assessment, reporting to parents, and how far we stretch the ablest pupils. In addition, we will want to consider issues that are implied rather than fully stated – health and safety matters, and our whole pastoral care structure. I will want to consult all parts of the school community over the Action Plan, and I would like to invite anyone with views and/or ideas, to send them to me as soon as possible. The meeting for parents to discuss the Action Plan in the summer term will be an important one; I will write to you again when I know the exact date.

The Troughton Equatorial Telescope
Black and white image Colour image Sketch by Troughton and Maskelyne First page of Troughton's instructions for adjusting the telescope. Reference to Troughton Equatorial in Scientific Instruments at Armagh ... Brief Biography of Edward Troughton, brother of John. 2-inch aperture, 3-feet focal length.
The Troughton equatorial arrived in December 1795 and was mounted, in the English style, under the south dome on two stone piers resting on a massive pillar, round which the staircase of the dwelling house winds. There is no polar axis, but the right ascension circle, 4 feet in diameter, is attached to the polar pivots by four stays. The declination circle is of the same size and is similarly attached by stays to two pivots, which turn in Y's fastened to the right ascension circle. A description of the instrument appears in Dr. Rees's Cyclopaedia, The equatorial was used for general observations and to measure the declinations of standard stars (see J. Pond, Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc., 453-454, 1806). The correction of observations made with equatorial instruments was the subject of a study by T. R. Robinson the results of which were published in the Trans. Roy. Irish Acad., 15,3, 1825. The instrument was also employed by R. Finlay in the rocket experiments to determine the distance between Armagh and Dublin in 1838 (see T.R. Robinson, Trans. Roy. Irish Acad., 19, 121, 1839).

92. Doctor Who - The Patrick Troughton Years

Doctor Who - The Early Doctors:
Patrick Troughton A Thankyou: This article would not have been possible without the aid of the Doctor Who Reconstruction Video Team, who supplied telesnap tapes of the wiped episodes. The people responsible, were, namely: Stephen Baker, Andrew Barrett, Simon Simmons and Steve Woolfall. Also helping to provide source video material of existing episodes was Robert Bradley. Massive thanks to all! "Come on without,
Come on within,
You'll not see nuthin'
Like The Mighty Trout's Quim."
Depending on whom you listen to, there are purported to be just five, seven or nine possible plots for drama. None of which was likely to have troubled the producers of the Patrick Troughton era, who got away with using the same story at least a dozen times. Ditching the historicals and making all aliens enemies to be defeated, the show was streamlined into a pretty singular view for a three-year period.
You might think that such a move would be boring. It isn’t. What helped was that Troughton was almost undeniably the best actor in the lead role. Intellectual Studywork The Unfolding Text praises his "invisible acting" and some of the earlier stories give him plenty of chances to show his versatility, both in disguise (The Highlanders) and in a dual role (The Enemy of the World).

The Airy Transit Circle
By Emily Winterburn Airy's advances New transit instrument Chronograph Innovations ... Print this article New transit instrument Instrument made by Troughton A new telescope was needed, Airy argued, because improvements in telescope design more generally meant discoveries were being made that the Observatory had no way of using or checking. Between 1801, when the first asteroid was discovered, and 1845, when Airy first proposed the new instrument, three new minor planets, or asteroids had been discovered. This figure continued to climb throughout the 19th century. The existing Troughton transit telescope was not powerful enough to see these. Yet, Airy argued, it was the duty of the Observatory to chart the position of all stars and planets so they might be used by navigators. The transit instrument that Airy's transit circle replaced was made by Edward Troughton of London, a famous instrument maker of the 18th century. He worked independently, on commission, from his workshop-cum-showroom, with the help of one or two assistants and apprentices and using an object glass from the optician, Peter Dollond. The construction of the Airy Transit Circle was completely different. For a start, Airy was in control, rather than the instrument makers involved. He drew up the designs, with advice from Charles May on engineering and William Simms on optics, to incorporate all the improvements he thought necessary to keep the Observatory at the forefront of positional astronomy. He then contracted out different parts of the overall construction to different companies. To that end, Ransomes and May of Ipswich were employed to carry out the engineering work on the telescope, such as the construction of the telescope tube and the mountings, while the optical work, and fine, detailed work of micrometer manufacture, was carried out by Troughton and Simms.
