Memories of John W. Tukey: Maintained by Bell Laboratories, Statistics and Data Mining Research Group Atsushi Akera
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Date published: 13 September 2002 W ith the advent of the World Wide Web, individuals and institutions are now creating Web sites that pay tribute to famous scientists, humanists, and other individuals. Thoughtfully maintained by those who were close to the individual, these sites generally offer a broad, personal look at a distinguished individual's long career. Memories of John W. Tukey is such a site. Briefly, John Tukey was a famous statistician who for most of his career held a joint appointment at Princeton University and Bell Telephone Laboratories. His most important contributions in statistics were in the areas of robust analysis and exploratory data analysis, although he made broad contributions to other fields, most notably with the (re)discovery, along with IBM's James Cooley, of the Fast Fourier Transform. He is also credited with coining the words "bit," "byte," and "software," somewhat to the chagrin of those in computer science who would have wished to do so first.

    TexaSoft Program Validation Information
    Program Validation
The core statistical procedures in the KWIKSTAT programs (including WINKS, the Windows version of KWIKSTAT) have been developed used for more than 10 years. Every revision of the program during that time has been tested in-house against the results of other major statistical programs such as SAS, BMDP, and SPSS. In addition, over 50 outside testers from universities, government and corporations world-wide periodically participate in further and continuous testing of the programs. If errors are found, the procedure is updated and re-tested, and corrected versions are sent to every user who is registered with TexaSoft program support. Published benchmark data sets, standard reviews of statistical procedures, and standard textbooks are also used to test statistical procedures. Below is a list of some of the papers and texts used to test program procedures and results: Journal Articles and Papers "Benchmark Data Sets for Evaluating Microcomputer Statistical Programs," Alan C. Elliott, Joan S. Reisch and Nancy P Campbell," Collegiate Microcomputer, November 1989.

    The Box Plot
The box plot is a graphical summary of the distribution of a variable originally developed by John Tukey (Tukey 1977; see also the Sygraph manual, Wilkinson 1990:164-171). The vertical line near the center of the box corresponds to the median of the distribution. The left and right edges of the box correspond to the 25th percentile (first quartile) and 75th percentile (third quartile), respectively. (The 25th and 75th percentiles are also termed lower hinge and upper hinge , respectively.) The length of the box therefore corresponds to the interquartile range (IQR), a measure of dispersion computed as the third quartile minus the first quartile. Stars are used to mark observations beyond 1.5 IQRs from either side of the box. Such observations are considered to be minor outliers . Circles mark observations, labeled major outliers , that have values beyond 3 IQRs from either side of the box. The lines, or whiskers , drawn from the sides of the box extend to the most outlying value within 1.5 IQR from the sides.

    BIOGRAPHY 15.1 John W. Tukey
John Wilder Tukey was born in New Bedford, a fishing town on the southern coast of Massachusetts. His father was a high school Latin teacher. His mother was trained as a teacher as well, but was denied employment because her spouse was already employed. So she started a private tutoring business and made John her prize pupil instead of sending him to public school where, she thought, "he would only get lazy." Eventually, John graduated from nearby Brown University with a degree in chemistry, followed by a graduate degree in mathematics from Princeton. Indeed, he spent most of his life at Princeton, where he founded the university's Statistics Department and taught for decades. John Tukey soon became one of the most influential statisticians of the late 20th century. Much of his work involved robust analysis , which allows researchers to reach credible conclusions even when their data are flawed. He also introduced new ways of presenting data clearly, including the

Back to KISH Home Page John Tukey As a chemist-turned-topologist-turned statistician, John Wilder Tukey played a key role in the development and study of statistics in the mid 1900's. The field of statistics has benefited tremendously from his contributions. J. W. Tukey was born on July 16, 1915, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was only child of Ralph H. and Adah M.Tukey. John was schooled at home by his parents who were teachers. He went to formal education at Brown University in Providence Rhode Island and studied mathematics and chemistry. He completed studies with a Master’s degree in chemistry. He then went on to study for a doctorate in mathematics at Princeton and received his doctorate in 1939. Denumerability in topology was his impressive thesis which was then published in 1940 as Convergence and Uniformity in topology. It was the second book in the Annals of Mathematics Studies of the Princeton University Press. However, this was not Tukey's first publication. Even prior to obtaining his doctorate, he wrote three papers that had been published. After receiving his doctorate, Tukey became an instructor at Princeton University. At this time, his work was mainly concentrated in the area of abstract mathematics. Also at this time, World War II was becoming a great influence on people's, including Tukey's, lives. In hopes of contributing to the war efforts, Tukey then joined the Fire Control Research.

The Chicago Chapter of the American Statistical Association is pleasedto announce its 2000 Spring Conference
"The Impact of Tukey's Exploratory Data Analysis."
DATE: May 5, 2000 TIME: 8:00 AM to about 5:00 PM PLACE: Rubloff Auditorium, 25 E. Pearson, Chicago, IL
John Tukey's 1977 book entitled "Exploratory Data Analysis" was a work that expounded a novel rethinking of what statisticians should do with their data. The emphasis was on the use of robust statistics, graphical presentation of data and using statistical procedures to uncover possible serendipitous findings. Over twenty years have elapsed since "Exploratory Data Analysis" was first published. The conference is about the effect these ideas have had on current statistical thinking. Two areas of substantial current interest include
    • methods of graphically presenting data and methods associated with Data Mining.
The conference has invited a diverse group of scholars to discuss the implications of Tukey's book on these areas and where we are going next with these ideas. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Academics, practicing statisticians, large database managers and researchers in fields such as marketing research, finance, education, program evaluation, medical research and public health who may need to perform data mining on large databases, or are concerned about presenting data in an optimal way.
