String Theory for Mathematicians
RAP, Spring, 2003
Organizer:
Administrative Assistant:
Schedule:
  • 12pm Tuesdays, 341 Altgeld Hall 1pm Wednesday, 241 Altgeld Hall Calendar
Description:
The goal of this RAP is to learn the notions of string theory from a mathematical perspective. At times, a trade-off will be necessary between mathematical rigor and the introduction of concepts of physics that are not mathematically rigorous. One proposed syllabus sketch is a systematic progression through the relevant essentials of classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and finally string theory. There are numerous references available on these materials, to be decided upon later. The RAP is open to faculty, postdocs, grad students, and advanced undergraduates in the Departments of Mathematics and Physics.

Karen Uhlenbeck Ph. D., Mathematics,
Brandeis University Dr. Uhlenbeck joined the mathematics faculty in 1987. Her teaching and research interests are primarily the application of non-linear partial differential equations to problems in differential geometry. She has done basic work on the minimal surfaces and Yang-Mills equations, as well as work which has general applicability to elliptic scale-invariant problems. She presently has a grant from the NSF to support current projects of gauge theory and the quantization of harmonic maps. In addition, she is one of the principal organizers of one of the regional geometry institutes sponsored by the NSF.

FAX (512) 471-5812 Dr. Alan Campion, Dow Chemical Company Professor of Chemistry; Dr. Kevin Matthew Puts, an assistant professor of composition in the School of Music; and Dr. Karen K. Uhlenbeck, Sid Richardson Foundation Regents Chair in Mathematics, are among 183 Guggenheim Fellows who will share awards totalling $6.6 million. The average Guggenheim Fellowship is about $36,000. Uhlenbeck is a UT Austin professor in mathematics who recently won the National Medal of Science, the American equivalent of the Nobel Prize. She conducts research in geometry and partial differential equations and is one of a very few mathematicians in the world who is an expert in the geometry of theoretical physics. Uhlenbeck works on complex differential equations used to look at the shapes in space and has solved equations that predict the existence of new particles in the universe that have not yet been observed by physicists. Uhlenbeck is especially interested in helping minority and women students pursue studies and careers in mathematics and science. Uhlenbeck was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1983. She was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and an Albert Einstein Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study.

Professor gets national science medal
"It feels pretty remarkable. But I can assure you that I'm not the most deserving person who's ever gotten it." Karen Uhlenbeck,
UT Math Professor
By Jamie Kopf
Daily Texan staff UT math professor Karen Uhlenbeck is no stranger to accolades. She has led a career rich with fellowships, awards, professional memberships and published work. Her research in areas ranging from the applications of geometry to high-energy physics have distinguished her as a pioneer in global analysis and gauge theory. On Friday, Uhlenbeck accepted the highest honor an American scientist can receive: the National Medal of Science. "It feels pretty remarkable," Uhlenbeck said from her Washington, D.C. hotel room before the ceremony. "But I can assure you that I'm not the most deserving person who's ever gotten it." Often called the American equivalent to the Nobel Prize, the National Medal of Science was established by Congress in 1959. A 12-member committee appointed by the president deliberates over each year's nominations, but the President of the United States makes the final decision. "The contributions of these scientists fill the range of physical, biological, mathematics, engineering, and behavioral and social science," said Bill Noxon, a spokesman for the National Science Foundation, which helps administer the award along with the White House.

UT Professor wins national science honor
By Aaron Schoenewolf
Daily Texan Staff The National Science Foundation announced Monday that Karen Uhlenbeck, professor of math, will receive the prestigious 2000 National Medal of Science for outstanding research on the field of mathematics. Uhlenbeck one of 12 American scientists and engineers to receive the award was honored for her contributions in mathematical physics and the theory of partial differential equations, according to officials from the National Science Foundation. The medal will be presented by President Bill Clinton at a formal dinner Dec. 1 in Washington, D.C. Uhlenbeck was nominated by a math colleague from Princeton University, and was selected by the Foundation. Uhlenbeck said she was surprised and honored, and is grateful for the help she has received from other UT professors in the mathematics department. "I didn't know that I was nominated by a mathematician colleague at Princeton, so I was surprised when they called and told me about the award," she said. "I have been treated well by UT I am grateful to have an endowed chair that has allowed me to accomplish a lot." Uhlenbeck is considered a founder of geometry based on analytical methods and is also a leader in encouraging young women to study mathematics, NSF officials said in a statement.

The Texas Memorial Museum is proud to recognize the accomplishments of women in science with a new exhibit, on display in May and June 2001. The exhibit’s opening event on May 6th will feature opportunities to meet prominent scientists from the UT-Austin community, tours of the new exhibit, and hands-on demonstrations in the natural and physical sciences.
Women In Science Exhibit
TMM’s newest exhibit is based on the poster project, Visualizing Women in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering, by Pamela Davis Kivelson Kivelson, who is Artistic Director of the Science and Art Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, created this exhibit in order to increase the number of women and girls choosing to pursue scientific careers, and to encourage scientific literacy in general. The posters address these goals by humanizing the images of science and of the scientist; they can be previewed at http://www.physics.ucla.edu/scienceandart/
