Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. 6 vols. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 was the "most-quoted" biographical source for 19th and early 20th America. Appleton's, due to its age, reflects the bias and prejudice of late 19th Century America. It is also estimated that 100 to 200 of the 35,000 biographies are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the OCR technology used to transfer the text to the web was, at best, only a 99% accurate. The American Legion Club provided a free soup and sandwich lunch for all veterans and their guests and the Senior Center offered all veterans over 60 a free chicken dinner. - He and his wife walked by as I pulled into the parking lot at Blesch auditorium in Menominee Wednesday. I smiled to myself...remembering. In the 'olden days' of the '40s our parents, the Mellingers and the Chatloshs were good friends, visiting back and forth on Sunday afternoons. We were quiet, well-behaved children, taught not to interfere when the grownups were talking about their 'olden days' experiences. They talked about growing up in Hungary and how they were given bananas on the boat trip to America but didn't know if you were supposed to eat the peelings or not because they hadn't seen bananas before. Finding work presented other problems. My dad's cousin got mad at him when he started laughing while on a bus in New Jersey. Dad thought it was funny that they didn't know where they were or where they were going, couldn't speak the language and yet they expected to get a job. Usually Francis and his brother and me and my sister played cards. They knew lots of card games and we could have fun while listening to our parents' stories.

In their first game since stumbling to a 2-2 draw at home to Macedonia, England's first-choice team - the only one that really mattered - conspired to play even worse against Australia. On a night when even the streaker only managed a half-monty, both of England's teams were booed off the pitch and the ground was half-empty well before the end. It may have been 119 days since Eriksson's team were last in action, against Macedonia, but this was Australia's first game since their World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in November 2001.

HENDRY HISTORY. Michaell Powell and Mary Ann registered a son, FrancisWilliam Powell, born 7th October, 1885 at Murringo, NSW. Mary
    http://www.angelfire.com/bc/chendry/powell.html
Michael Powell, born c1841, came from Clare, Ireland, the son of Peter Powell and Johanna Lahiff. He married 8th August, 1896 at St. Patricks, Boorowa, NSW, at age 55, to Mary Ann Boyd nee Delaney. Mary Ann had previously married James Boyd at Blakneys Creek in 1862 and subsequently lived as a common law wife with James Hendry, with whom she had a large family. For further details on this section of history, go to the BOYD HISTORY or the HENDRY HISTORY. Michaell Powell and Mary Ann registered a son, Francis William Powell, born 7th October, 1885 at Murringo, NSW. Mary Ann Delaney/Boyd/Powell had a son named Thomas, in 1882. He was registered as the son of James Hendry and Mary Ann Delaney, but at the time of his marriage to Rubie May Fisher in 1915 at Young NSW, his name is given as Thomas Powell, so it would appear that he had assumed the surname of his step-father Michael Powell. At the time of the marriage of Michael Powell and Mary Ann Boyd nee Delaney, Michael was 55 and a labourer by occupation, and Mary Ann was a washer woman aged 51. Thomas Powell and Ruby Fisher had a daughter, Mary E Powell, born 1915 at Young, NSW and possibly a son Fred Powell as on the death certificate of Francis William Powell, the witness was F. Powell, nephew, of the Hibernian Hotel, Goulburn. Oral family history reports the existence of a Fred Powell, son of Thomas Powell.

    Cullens of Upton, Nottinghamshire
    The Rude Forefathers
Main Line of "The Rude Forefathers"
The Cullens that lived in Upton, Nottinghamshire were part of a large group of yeoman farmers. A book, "The Rude Forefathers", was written many years ago by Francis Horner West, a retired Bishop who lived in the Upton vicarage. The Venerable Francis H. West was also Archdeacon of Newark in Nottinghamshire. Francis West likely took the title from a poem written by Thomas Gray . A chapter in Mr. West's book describes the life of the yeoman farmer and, lucky for us, he chose the records of the Cullen family as an example. Included is a fairly detailed genealogy.
