From Geometry and Physics (1923) by Veblen: What I wish to emphasize now is the need of logistic studies which will make it possible to say more definitely than is yet possible in this field what is assumed, what is proved, and how the group of theorems and definitions hang togeter. From Science , Feb. 2, 1923
(In Science and Sanity by Korzybski , 4-th ed., p. 151) From A Mathematical Science (1910) by Veblen and John Wesley Young: 1. UNDEFINED ELEMENTS AND UNPROVED PROPOSITIONS GEOMETRY deals with the properties of figures in space. Every such figure is made up of various elements (points, lines, curves, planes, surfaces, etc.), and these elements bear certain relations to each other (a point lies on a line, a line passes through a point, two planes intersect etc.). The propositions stating these properties are logically interdependent, and it is the object of geometry to discover such propositions and to exhibit their logical interdependence. Some of the elements and relations, by virtue of their greater simplicity, are chosen as fundamental, and all other elements and relations are defined in terms of them. Since any defined element or relation must be defined in terms of other elements and relations, it is necessary that one or more of the elements and one or more of the relations between them remain entirely undefined From Projective Geometry (1910) by Veblen and Young vol. 1, Ginn and Company

ABOUT AY BOOKS ESSAYS ... LINKS
Mathematics and philosophy have always been twins. The attraction of the "Queen of Sciences" for philosophers is fairly obvious. From Pythagoras to Leibnitz and Descartes to Russell the two disciplines are frequently, and for good reason, exemplified in the same individual.
Arthur Young was a mathematician and an engineer, a practical man who knew how, in the Yankee tradition of know-how, and as such was the most significant single figure in the development of the Bell helicopter. He was also a top-flight astrologer, a delver into myths and dreams, a long-term investigator of PSI phenomena but, more importantly, the elaborator of what may be the first unified field theory of consciousness and of existence itself: the Theory of Process, described in his two volume work, The Reflexive Universe and The Geometry of Meaning
Shortly before Arthur Young was born, Charles Saunders Peirce, whom Russell called "one of the most original minds of the later nineteenth century, and certainly the greatest American thinker ever, had published a scathing attack on his contemporaries. The business of metaphysics, Peirce said, "is to study the most general features of reality and real objects. But in its present condition it is...a puny, rickety, and scrofulous science. It is only too plain that those who pretend to cultivate it carry not the hearts of true men of science within their breasts."
The year of Peirce's diatribe, the year too of Einstein's first paper on relativity, Charles and Eliza Young were in Paris, early expatriates in what was to become an American tradition.

Overview
This completely wooded park, with its mature trees and gently rolling contour, is among the best in the area for a moderate hiking adventure. A system of more than three miles of color-coded trails enables the visitor to explore the forest ecosystem and provides an insight into the history of the tract as well.

History
Oswald Veblen, an internationally known mathematician who taught at Princeton University, lived on this property and enjoyed strolling through the woods with his colleagues. He and his wife, Elizabeth, deeded their land to the Mercer County Park System in 1957, to be maintained as a wildlife and plant sanctuary with nature trails. Horseback riding was specifically prohibited to protect the soils from erosion. The County acquired additional acreage, the Levine tract, in the early 1970's, to bring the Woods to its current 142 acres. The red trail follows the original property line, and may have been blazed by Dr. Veblen. The blue trail winds through the Levine tract.
