List of Venn Family Members
This page lists my direct ancestors and other close relatives who bore the surname Venn and who were born between 1700 and 1910. The starting point is the "Henry Venn of Peyhembury" who married Jane Good in 1727. Entries in italics are uncertain, or have not been personally verified by us (many of these entries were supplied by other family members). The list does not include children known to have died in infancy. Many of the names below are linked to the corresponding record in the on-line family tree. When you click on a link, the linked record will be displayed in a separate window. If your browser does not support frames and JavaScript you will not be able to see the on-line family tree. The Venn Family in Devon
This page contains some notes about the Devon Venns and about my particular branch of the family. They are intended to help you decide whether or not we have some common ancestors, whether I might have information which will help you, and whether you might have information which will help me.
The Devon Venns
My main source of information on the earlier Devon Venns is an old and obscure book: Venn Family Annals
Annals of a Clerical Family
By John Venn FRS FSA
Published by MacMillan and Co 1904 The name Venn appears to be derived from "fen", with both the name and the early records suggesting that the Venns originated in the low-lying fen districts of East Anglia and Somerset. One of the earliest Venn families on record lived in the villages of Lydeard St Lawrence and Bishop's Lydeard, near Taunton in Somerset. In Devon, several generations of Venns can be found in the records of the adjoining parishes of Broadhembury and Payhembury, to the west of Honiton. The earliest records date from the 1550s, when a John Venn lived in Broadhembury, and an Osmund Venn lived in Payhembury. As the name Venn does not appear in any earlier records for this area, the author of the Venn Family Annals speculates on the origins of this family. The author argues that John and Osmund Venn must have been related, possibly even brothers, as it seems unlikely that two unrelated families with the same name would appear in the same place at the same time. He also suggests that the family had recently arrived in Devon from Lydeard in Somerset "which lies only about twelve miles off to the north". Although the actual distance is at least 16 miles, his argument is plausible, if not yet proven.

Boole's Logic http:// projects.edtech.sandi.net/ofarrell/boolequest Designed By Michael Martin Email Introduction Did you know that the basis for our modern computers was discovered in the mid 1800's. In this lesson, you will learn who, how, and why computers were made possible. During this lesson you will research the development of the logical operators that are necessary for all computers. In addition, you will explore the uses of these operators in everyday English and compare these meanings with the mathematical meanings used in the computer decision making process and web search engine selection processes. The Task At the completion of this lesson, you will present a hyperstudio/slide show report detailing the early contributions (1850 - 1900) in the development of modern computers. The report will provide the who, what, and why for significant contributions to the development of computers. The projects that you will complete for this lesson are as follows:
    • Who was George Boole? What does he have to do with modern computers (Cluster chart using Inspiration), Comparison chart of Mathematical usage vs. English language usage of the logical operators(ClarisWorks)

NEWSLETTER RD NOVEMBER, 2002 Web page www.tvcc.asn.au 44 intrepid travellers gathered at Oatlands outside the Midlands Hotel for the start of the annual STVCC 77km Handicap Oatlands to Richmond There was a Crosswind/Headwind to Melton Mowbray riders turned the corner and in sailing terms “eased the sheets” to enjoy a gradually increasing tailwind. Mark Bowden carrying on his world champion form broke away again at the the Ford and continued to gather up the remaining riders in front, (finishing first, with fastest time), including Rex Godfrey and Murray Davies, who were doing 68kph and 135 revs, two thirds of the way down Water Tower Hill when he “sailed” past. Rex Godfrey and Murray Davies were caught by Ian Leighton and Laurie Venn (2 nd fastest time )at 2.5kms and then by John Mills and Lynn Faulkner,at 1.5km to go. Both John and Lynn performing well, along with the other 12m min group. Rex and Murray finished with another group of riders only 4 seconds behind them. Linda Sulzberg’s excellent effort saw her coming in with that group, having nearly caught them after being dropped up Water Tower Hill.

    http://www.towson.edu/heartfield/lessons/lpscript.html
    Script Analysis
    Background
Students are beginning a Drama unit and will be reading and responding to a variety of plays and dramatic forms (radio plays, stage plays, screenplays, teleplays). Students will also be writing an original dramatic dialogue and must be able to identify elements of a script and use these elements properly. Brief Description of the Lesson Students will determine the elements of a script (dialogue, stage directions) inductively by first comparing dramatic dialogue to prose, then by comparing two samples of dramatic dialogue, and finally by completing an unfinished "Drama Rulebook," putting dramatic conventions they discover in the form of rules. Learning Objectives/Goal Students will analyze examples of drama and prose and identify the unique characteristics of dramatic dialogue (script form). Intended Grade Level or Audience Grade 8 students (or middle school) Concepts Covered in the Lesson

    • teaching method: inductive; cooperative learning

    What is Sealed Knot Society?

    Who was Sir John Owen?

The Colour / Flag we follow

An accurate portrayal of an Ensign
Woodcut depicting an Ensign with his colours
    Raising the Standard at Chirk
Each company of foot carried a flag or Colour, which served as a recognised rallying point in action and was carried by the Ensign. The colours of the sealed knot are as varied and diverse as the companies who carry them. Owens colour has been a source of many debates since the company was formed. Unlike some in the know that can quote reputable 17th Century eyewitnesses to validate their colour authenticity, we can never be sure. Although King Charles both saw and commented upon Sir John Owens regiment and colours, everyone was too short-sighted to make a note of the colours and patterns used in case some people wanted to dress up in breeches and run around muddy fields three hundred and fifty years time. Although today the Regiment forms up with pride under the red and white gyronnic colour, we may actually be saluting the wrong one! There are at least three viable suggestions as to what Sir John's actual colour could have resembled. We certainly know from contemporary accounts that fine quality colours could be ordered for the a price around £2 5s, and that they were generally constructed from 6sq. ft of painted taffeta, fixed to a 7ft staff with an iron or brass spear point with two tassels. However this is where certainty ends and speculation begins.
