82. Algebra And Analytic Geometry

http://members.tripod.com/rbrandell/algebra.htm
Algebra and Analytic Geometry Beginning in the 16th century the diverse fields of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry were integrated. Standard notations were developed: symbols for operations, the equal sign, using letters of the alphabet to represent unknowns, and the use of exponents and coefficients. Descartes and Fermat applied algebra to geometry, bringing the full power of the former to bear on the latter. This became known as analytic geometry, the precursor of calculus. Nunca entender© por qu© raz³n los textos de matem¡tica no dicen una palabra de estas cosas. Es posible que yo, sin formaci³n matem¡tica, sea muy impresionable, pero para m este tipo era un Maradona. The concept of the zero was introduced in India, where the dot symbol or sunya was used to indicate an empty space. The system of numbers through 9 came to Syria from India in the mid-seventh century and to Europe via the Islamic world around the year 1000. Gerbert d'Aurillac, a French scholar, studied in Spain where he probably learned algebra (from the Arab al jabr) and decimal numbers from Islamic mathematicians. He is credited with introducing these numbers into Europe but the idea of the zero was not understood at first. Today the numbers that we use are called Arabic numbers because of their history. Today.
