ANDREY VINOGRADOV
ANDREY VINOGRADOV was born in Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk) on March 7, 1959. In his school years, he tried his hand in composition, experimenting with various styles and genres of academic music and jazz. Later on he studied musical theory and composition at Tchaikovsky Music College of Ekaterinburg. And in 1982, he was invited to continue his education at Gnessin Music College in Moscow. Having left the College, he entered the Gnessin Academy of Music, where he studied jazz piano under the renowned Russian jazz composer and pianist Igor M.Brille. This gave him a more profound acquaintance with the art of jazz improvisation as well as symphonic and jazz orchestration. Simultaneously he started to appear as a solo performer in academic piano recitals and as a spontaneous cross-style improvisator.
In 1984, A.Vinogradov accepted the invitation to join the Arsenal (a well-known Russian jazz-rock group, directed by a saxophonist Alexei Kozlov). In 1984-85, he took part in the recording of two Arsenal LPs Vtoroye Dykhanie (The Second Wind) and Pulse 3, which later were released on CDs Opalionye Vremenem (Time-scorched) III and Opalionye Vremenem IV (1997-1998). With the Arsenal, he toured a lot throughout the Soviet Union, Western Germany and India.
Since 1989, being inspired by the Russian Silver Age poetry (V.Soloviev, A.Blok, M.Voloshin, A.Akhmatova, etc.), A.Vinogradov has started experiments linking a traditional song form with folklore and avant-garde instrumental compositions.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY TIME EUROPE FEBRUARY 21, 2000 VOL. 155 NO. 7 Ivan the Ill Post-Soviet trauma is to blame for the soaring number of Russians in a sad state of mental health By ROD USHER When an authority on Russia says the country is going crazy, it evokes images in the West of a nation in political and economic turmoil; of brutal regional warfare; of barons and mafiosi getting richer while the proles steadily get poorer. But when Boris Shostakovich says "Russia is going crazy," he is talking literally. He is a psychiatrist, and his diagnosis is supported by his colleague Tatyana Dmitriyevauntil 1998 no less than Russia's Minister for Healthwho says "almost 90% of the population should see a doctor." Russia does look to be truly unwell. Among its population of 145.6 million there are now 4 million registered patients with mental disorders, and the real figure is far higher; doctors say only a quarter of those who have mental problems seek professional help. Even the official figure is 20% higher than the incidence of mental illness recorded in the U.S. and most European countries. While it can be argued that Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Anton Chekhov, Mikhail Bulgakov and many other Russian writers have long grappled with the issue of national sanity, the rise in mental illness has accelerated rapidly in recent times. In 1990, for every 100,000 Russians, 251 were listed as mentally disabled; by 1996, even that official figure had leapt to 386. Studies between 1974 and 1980 by the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences indicated that between 8% and 10% of Russian children had mental disorders; today the academy's mental health experts put the level at 18% to 20%. One shocking result, according to Valery Krasnov, director of Moscow's Psychiatric Research Institute, is that youths with some sort of mental disorder account for one in every three conscripts into the armed forces.

One of the basic principles of JRL is the superiority of knowledge based on direct reading (in this case) of the views of others over the filtered/edited opinions of assorted commentators and even reporters. Thus we do like to bring you extended interviews with important Russian figures. This is not the way that "busy" and "important" people form their opinions because it takes too long. So much the worse for the rest of us.)

Vinogradov has sometimes found himself excluded from the inner circle of the big banks. Given that in 1997 he was the vice president of the Association of Russian Bankers, this is somewhat surprising. Yet he was not among the Big Ten who met with former Prime Minister Kiriyenko and President Yeltsin in June 1998 to discuss the country's economic crisis. Inkombank, Mr. Vinogradov's bank, was also attacked by among others the Central Bank in June 1996 for what was claimed to be inadequate reserves. In effect the Central Bank tried to create a run on the bank and Inkombank lost $39 million in assets in a few days. Fortunately for Inkombank, following Black Thursday on August 13, 1998, the Central Bank did help Inkombank with a temporary loan so that it could continue to service its depositors.

Press Releases
MICEX celebrates its 10th anniversary, organizes an art exhibition in Moscow
January 15, 2002
Press release Today, Moscow "Novy Manezh" exhibition hall opens an art exhibition "Contemporary Russian Painting: 1992 - 2002" presenting the main trends in modern Russian graphic arts. The exhibition has been organized in connection with the 10th anniversary of the Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange (MICEX), established in January 1992 as one of the most important institutions of Russia's financial market. The special interest of the exhibition organizers and MICEX to the contemporary arts of the 1990s is explained by the fact that this was the period when civilized market relations formed in Russia and when arts began to develop within the international context. According to Alexandr Zakharov, MICEX CEO, "the changes that have taken place in the Russian society as a result of economic reforms have promoted the emergence of new trends in arts and further development of Russian culture". Alexandr Zakharov noted that new Russian entrepreneurs are prepared to continue the traditions of sponsorship and charity and help the development of the Russian national culture. At the opening ceremony MICEX representatives presented the State Tretyakov Gallery the picture by Alexandr Kosolapov "Malevich - sold out". The exhibition "Contemporary Russian Painting: 1992-2002" organized by MICEX and XL-gallery is the first attempt to analyze one of the most interesting phenomena of the last decade. Critics, who write about the 1990's Russian arts, usually focus on the rapid development of actionism, performance, video and photography paying little attention to painting. Meanwhile, this art has never been in the shadow, and many stars of contemporary painting appeared in that period.

During the reigns of Anna Ivanovna (1730-1740) and Elizabeth Petrovna (1741-1761) the Baroque style prevailed in the arts as it had during the first years of the century. Its development reached its high point between 1730 and 1750, for the splendour and solemnity of the style corresponded to the growing power of the Russian monarchy. Many foreign artists and architects were invited to work in Russia. Others came themselves, hearing of great opportunities to be found. Most of them lived and worked in Russia to the end of their lives, and they had an enormous influence overall on the development of the arts. Official portraiture was still the most important genre in Russian art. Russian and foreign artists created numerous sculptures, paintings, prints , and drawings of the Empresses Anna Ivanovna and Elizabeth Petrovna. These formal portraits were intended to decorate the palaces, state institutions, and mansions of the Russian nobility. Most prominent of these artists were Louis Tocque, Georg Grooth, and Bartolomeo Rastrelli, but it was the engraved Portrait of Anna Ivanovna (1740) by Christian Albrecht Wortman and I. Sokolov's etched Portrait of Elizabeth Petrovna (1746) that were regarded as the standard portraits, recommended as models to other artists. There are magnificent formal portraits of the Russian nobility, military leaders, and courtiers, which emphasized the individual features of the subjects. Such are the portraits of the notable Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov and Privy Chancellor I. Ushakhov by anonymous authors; Elizabeth Petrovna's confessor F. Dubensky by ?. Rokhotov; and the wife of the merchant Yakovlev by Ivan Vishnyakhov.
