Ludwig von Mises, socialism's greatest enemy His life and times
Photo by Bettina Bien Greaves The unprecedented slaughter of the 20 th century was primarily carried out in the name of socialism, the doctrine that government must control everything. Socialism's most outspoken adversary was the Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises. He wrote 29 books in German and English, and they have been translated into Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Polish, Portugese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. Mises displayed extraordinary foresight. He scoffed at Marxian claims that socialism was inevitable and he was right. Way back in 1920, just three years after the socialist coup in Russia, he boldly predicted that socialism would never deliver decent living standards and he was right again. He declared that civil liberties were impossible under socialism, and he was right yet again.

Mises vs. von Mises Posted by: I Have a Burning Question ( ) on 17 Jul 2002 at 8:47:22 PM
I have wondered about this for years and can no longer stand not knowing. Ludwig von Mises was an economist who most libertarians have heard of. Almost invariably when I have seen him referred to by last name only, I see him referred to as "Mises". Richard von Mises was an applied mathematician (the brother of Ludwig, and who most engineers have heard of) who worked extensively in several areas and for whom the von Mises stress (used in strengths of materials problems) is named. We don't call it the "Mises stress". It is always the "von Mises stress" and I've never seen him referred to as simply "Mises". Why the difference? Replies:

Ludwig von Mises Exchanges Views With Georgists "Professor Ludwig von Mises was a guest of the director of the Henry George School of Social Science in New York, Robert Clancy, for an informal evening in November, 1951. A number of faculty members welcomed the opportunity to meet this well-known author and hear his views on Henry George's works. Professor von Mises agreed that he would like to see an increasd levy on land, but he cited historical reasons why he does not facor confiscation of land a term which he holds is concomitant with the taking of the full economic rent. Though his views did not go unchallenged, they wre well taken." [reprinted from the Henry George News , February and March, 1952]
Ludwig von Mises, at the request of director Robert Clancy, kindly consented to condense in writing his critical views on the confiscation of the rent of land used for agriculture. Among a group of New York and Newark Georgists who are students and readers of Professor Von Mises, these views occasioned thoughtful comment at the time of his visit to the Henry George School. Dr. von Mises wrote:
"If the government confiscates the whole rent of land, it does not make any difference for the individual farmer whether the soil he tills is more or less fertile. The same input of capital and labor yields

Richard von Mises was born in Lvov when it was under Austrian control and known as Lemberg. His father, Arthur Edler von Mises, worked for the Austrian State Railways as a technical expert and his mother was Adele von Landau. Richard was the second son of the family, the elder son being Ludwig von Mises who went on to become as famous as Richard. Ludwig, who was about eighteen months older than Richard, went on to become an economist who contributed to liberalism in economic theory and made his belief in consumer power an important part of that theory. Richard also had a younger brother, who died as an infant. It was on the technical course that von Mises embarked, studying mathematics, physics and engineering at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna. After graduating he was appointed as Georg Hamel's assistant in Brünn. The city of Brünn is today called Brno in the south-eastern Czech Republic. Up to World War II the inhabitants were predominantly German, although today they are now mainly Czech. Von Mises was awarded a doctorate from Vienna in 1907 and the following year he was awarded his habilitation from Brünn, becoming qualified to lecture on engineering and machine construction.

Resources for Economics for Real People
In my humble, unbiased opinion, the best economic site on the web is Mises.org , the web site of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. The site features daily articles on contemporary economic issues, back issues of several periodicals, a number of online books by Mises, and many other resources for both scholars and students. Best of all, it's all searchable. Editor Jeff Tucker has created an economics web site that is worth going to every day , no small feat. Greg Ransom, apparently accomplishing a Herculean effort on his own, has established a thriving Hayek Center site that is also worth checking into frequently. Greg keeps up-to-date lists of articles that have interested him, both on Hayek and on political economy in general, and runs a very active discussion group for Hayek scholars. The web site of The Foundation for Economic Education , after being stagnant for some time, has recently become an active and interesting place to visit. The Ideas on Liberty archive is a great resource.

    Heritage Lecture #754
Ludwig von Mises was one of the outstanding economists of the 20th century. Born in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary, in September 1881, he graduated from the University of Vienna with a doctoral degree in jurisprudence, with an emphasis on economics, in 1906. Shortly before the First World War he published his first important book, The Theory of Money and Credit, in which he developed a version of the cash balance approach to explain the demand for money. He also formulated a theory of the business cycle that integrated Eugen von Boehm-Bawerk's "Austrian" theory of capital with Knut Wicksell's theory of the natural rate of interest. He explained how monetary and credit expansion had the potential to distort the market's equilibrium rate of interest, causing an imbalance between savings and investment, which could generate an initial inflationary economic expansion that would then be followed by corrective economic recession or depression. But Mises' most famous contribution to economic theory during his lifetime was his critique of socialism. In a 1920 article entitled "Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth," and in a book on Socialism that he published two years later in 1922, Ludwig von Mises argued that comprehensive socialist central planning would result in economic inefficiency and waste rather than the bountiful horn of plenty promised by the advocates of various forms of collectivism. The abolition of private property, market competition, and market-generated money-prices for the society's scarce factors of production would eliminate all capability for any rational economic calculation of the opportunity costs concerning the application and use of resources, labor, and capital. Socialism totally triumphant and implemented would merely lead to Planned Chaos, as he expressed it in the title of one of his later works.

Much of my work is in the area of model assessment, generally in the form of goodness-of-fit. In this area I work with Michael Stephens developing specific tests for distributional assumptions and with Peter Guttorp providing general large sample theory for quadratic tests. My approach to theory is that large sample calculations should lead in a natural way to computable probability approximations. In practice this seems to lead to the study of linear or quadratic functionals of asymptotically Guassian processes. I am particularly interested in limit theorems which naturally lead to approximations whose quality is uniform.

Montag, 17. The talk will try to shed some light on the controversial and multi-layered personality of von Mises against the backdrop of incisive biographical and political events.
Being personally ``aristocratic'', ambitious and competitive, always critical of the lowering of intellectual standards and given to sharp worded polemics, uprooted early from his native Austria, a repeated emigré to Germany, Turkey and the United States, forced to teach in four different languages during the course of his career, principally opposed to organized political or philosophical activity, von Mises bore all traits of marked individualism in an age of ideology, war and scientific revolution.
But at the same time, von Mises strove for a new synthesis of mathematics and engineering, sought identity by temporarily resorting to German-Austrian nationalism, and searched for the connectibility (``Verbindbarkeit'') of scientific and artistic performances, thereby being even more ``universal'' than the ``Unity of Science Movement'' of similar-minded neopositivist philosophers, who did not equal him in specific scientific competence.

Von Mises, semisconosciuto (e deliberatamente occultato) in Italia fino a qualche anno fa, negli Stati Uniti è sempre stato considerato - insieme a Friedrich August von Hayek - il padre dei libertarian contemporanei. R EASON * May 1997 Mises Papers Recovered By Brian Doherty A treasure trove of 20th-century economic and libertarian history, long thought destroyed by the Nazis, has been recently recovered and brought-on microfilm, at least-to the United States. Ludwig von Mises, linchpin of the 20th-century free market Austrian economic tradition and author of such classics of 20th-century political and economic liberalism as Socialism and Human Action , left his papers and correspondence behind in his native Vienna when he went to teach in Switzerland in 1934. When the Nazis occupied Austria in March 1938, they went to arrest Mises but instead found only his documents. Mises and his wife, who ended up in the United States after the war, assumed the Nazis destroyed the papers. They didn't. They merely shipped them to a storage house of stolen documents in Czechoslovakia, which was occupied by the Soviet army at the war's end. The Soviets moved the documents to Moscow, where the KGB carefully organized and catalogued them. While researching a forthcoming biography of Mises, Richard Ebeling of Hillsdale College in Michigan discovered their continued existence at Moscow's Center for Historical and Documental Collections. "This is an incredibly exciting find," Ebeling says. "It's a very significant period of Mises's life, records of which we thought were lost." Ebeling visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington last July to inquire about Gestapo files on Mises. The museum didn't have any, but a researcher there had a list of historical archives in Moscow related to the war, and he showed Ebeling an entry for archival papers on Ludwig von Mises.
