The Tenacity of Ludwig von Mises
by Gary North Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973) is not widely regarded as a major figure of twentieth-century economic theory. The main reason for this assessment is the fact that those within the economics profession who make such career-enhancing imputations regarding other economists have adopted economic theories that he had refuted before most of them were born, or in some cases, before their fathers were born. His contemporaries adopted a time-honored technique of dealing with him: the memory hole. "Mises? Who's Mises?" Their successors remained in the dark. He fully understood the game. When his wife once told him that his ideas would be more widely received some day, he replied that an academic man's influence can be estimated by references to him the footnotes of his contemporaries. His name and work were missing. The vast majority of professionals in any field, including academic disciplines, never make a major intellectual contribution. Few of them make even a minor contribution. Few of them are remembered after they retire, if they were known before they retired. They are practitioners of what Thomas Kuhn has called "normal science," and most of them are normal practitioners. Mises was in this sense highly abnormal.

LUDWIG VON MISES ON ECONOMICS, IDEOLOGY, WORLD VIEW AND THE AIM
AND METHOD OF ECONOMICS
March 15, 1998
.....The purpose of this short note is to describe Ludwig von Mises's distinction between economics, ideology, and world view, as described in his Human Action "The main objective of praxeology and economics," Mises declares, "is to substitute consistent correct ideologies for the contradictory tenets of popular eclecticism."(Mises 1966: 185) According to Mises, economics is a set of logical deductions about"what is" in the sense that the images it constructs must be relevant to the social facts one aims to describe. Ideology goes beyond the study of things as they are. It is "about the ought, i.e., about the ultimate ends which man should aim at in his earthly concerns."( ibid .: 178) Ideology can also be distinguished from the broader concept of a world view , which is an interpretation of all things, and as a precept for action, an opinion concerning the best means for removing uneasiness as much as possible...Religion, metaphysics, and philosophy aim at providing a world view. They interpret the universe and they advise men how to act."( ibid
Ideologies may be of many types. Let us divide them into two classes: (1) asceticism and (2) non-ascetic ideologies. Economics is irrelevant to asceticism. Mises focused on those ideologies that claim to be about the attainment of earthly ends. These "must pay heed to the fact that

Frauen in der Mathematik (2)
Veronika Schallhart am 27.09.2001 DieUniversitaet.at berichtete zwei Mathematikerinnen Hilda Geiringer-Mises: "...it is the deepest need of my life" ...schrieb Hilda Geiringer-Mises 1953 über Mathematik und "I never stopped it since my student days."

In Vienna, prior to, during, and just after World War I, Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973) was attaining his full intellectual maturity. For a liberal like Mises these were truly lamentable years. The years from the early 1890s to 1920 constituted perhaps the most retrogressive watershed in the history of Western civilization. They were the years during which the grand liberal system of the Nineteenth Century was overthrown and transformed into Twentieth-Century statism. Saddened, but undaunted, Mises would spend the rest of his life championing the noble but forsaken cause of liberty and liberalism. Ed.1 By the last decade of the Nineteenth Century, signals were clear that the beginning of the end of the liberal era was at hand. The liberating forces that had been advancing for more than two centuries were grinding to a halt. The New Imperialism, preparation for militarism, and protectionism were replacing both the principles and reality of international peace and free trade. Neomercantilism was being reconstructed around the globe. Ed.2

Natural Elites, Intellectuals, and the State Great Austrian Economists Benjamin Anderson Frederic Bastiat Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk Richard Cantillon Frank Fetter Gottfried von Haberler Henry Hazlitt F.A. Turgot Phillip Wicksteed Friedrich von Wieser "I can see a day when economics will be taught as human action-including every subject that those words imply-and not broken up into courses that produce mathematicians instead of economists." Margit von Mises died on June 25, just a week short of her 103 rd birthday. While physically frail the last few years, Margit remained mentally alert until a few months before her death. Indeed, such a conventional phrase as "mentally alert" scarcely begins to describe Margit: down nearly to the end, she was sharp as a tack, vitally interested in the world and in everyone around her. It was impossible to put anything over on her, as people often try to do with the elderly. Indeed, since the death of her husband Ludwig von Mises 20 years ago, one had the impression she could out think and outsmart everyone with whom she came into contact. After the death of her beloved Lu, Margit swung into action, to become an indefatigable one-woman "Mises industry." She dug up unpublished manuscripts of Lu's, had them translated and edited, and supervised their publication. She also supervised reprints and translations of Mises's published work. She was chairman of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. And she was fervent in pressing the cause of her late husband, as well as the ideas of freedom and free markets to which he had devoted his life. She refused to let any slighting or denigration of Mises by his genuine or less-than-genuine admirers or disciples go unremarked or go unchastised.
