My father, who was a political scientist at Harvard, used to say with a superior smile that the Department of Social Relations (Harvard's home for sociologists) ought to be investigated. It was the 1950s and he was imagining Talcott Parsons investigated by some intellectual equivalent of the House Un-American Activities Committee. I laughed, and majored in Economics. A few years later, though, when I was a section man (so the sexist terminology of 1966) in the interdisciplinary major called Social Studies I was required to teach Marx, Durkheim, Weber to undergraduates, which entailed actually reading some sociology. So I soon lost my sneering rights about the field. Since then I've never been quite able to close my mind to what sociologists say, though like most economists I've given it the old college try. Despite my professional oath never listen to anyone outside economics, I've listened to David Riesman and C. Wright Mills, for example, and to a long list of sociologically-oriented anthropologists, and latterly to the group of British sociologists (and an occasional Frenchman) doing social studies of science: Michael Mulkay, Harry Collins, Trevor Pinch, Bruno Latour, among many others. But I worry. My worry is something like the opposite of my father's. It's not that sociology is insufficiently Rigorous. It's that sociology may be rigorously following political science itself into what might be called econowannabe-ism: the promiscuous use of rational choice "models" backed with econometrics. I was a colleague of Gary Becker's when he was conspiring with Jim Coleman at Chicago to accomplish just this for sociology. At the time I thought it was neat. But since then I've seen it for what it is: one idea of how people behave, useful so far as it goes; but really stupid as an all-purpose scientific program. Really. Stupid.

    Ballads of the drug trade
Journalist delves into new Mexican-border 'narcocorridos'
    By DAVID D. MEDINA
    NARCOCORRIDO:
    A Journey Into the Music
    of Drugs, Guns, and Guerrillas.
    By Elijah Wald.
Rayo/HarperCollins, $24. JOURNALISTS have long been hooked on drug stories, and Elijah Wald has gotten his fix by focusing on a new tune for an old song. His latest book is devoted to narcocorridos , ballads that tell a story about the drug traffic. The topic seems frivolous, but Wald makes a cogent argument for the importance of delving into a music that has become increasingly popular in the past 30 years in Mexico and the United States. The corridos not only provide catchy tunes for country dancing but also serve as an archaic form of spreading the news and chronicling the gunfights of drug traffickers and other underworld happenings.

    EUGENE LUKACS
Eugene Lukacs was born in Szombathely, Hungary on August 14, 1906. Six weeks after his birth, he was brought to Vienna where he grew up, got his primary and secondary education and studied mathematics at University of Vienna. He took courses with Hans Hahn, Eduard Helly, Walter Meyer, Leopold Vietoris and Wilhelm Wirtinger. Eugene met his wife to be, Elizabeth Weisz, at the University of Vienna in 1927. She was taking Mathematics and Physics. They were married in 1935. Eugene's interest in geometry led him to write a Ph.D. dissertation under Walter Meyer. He earned his Ph.D. degree in 1930. Subsequently he took an actuarial degree in 1931. Due to scarceness of positions at the University, Eugene taught secondary school in Vienna for two years. Then he accepted a position as an actuary at an insurance company. E. Helly and Z.W. Birnbaum were amongst his colleagues. He stayed with the company until 1937 and also taught extension courses in mathematics at the Volkshochschule Wien Volksheim. When Germany annexed Austria in 1938 he decided to emigrate to USA arriving here in February 1939. About the same time many other Jewish statisticians and mathematicians emigrated to the United States. These included Gerhard Tintner, Z.W. Birnbaum, Henry Mann, Oscar Morgenstern and Abraham Wald. Upon arrival, Eugene renewed his acquaintance with Abraham Wald whom he had met in Vienna. Under Wald's influence Eugene became interested in probability and statistics. Wald introduced him to the vast literature on probability and statistics that was largely unknown in Central Europe at that time. Wald invited him to attend his, and Hotelling's lectures at Columbia. Thus began Eugene's long and fruitful career in statistics during which he wrote five books and well over 100 papers.

    The World Above
Abraham Polonsky Introduction by Paul Buhle and Dave Wagner Abraham Polonsky is perhaps best known for his film work: director of the motion picture Force of Evil, for which he wrote the screen play with Ira Wolfert from Wolfert's novel Tucker's People, and screenwriter for Academy Award nominee Body and Soul. The World Above, his third and most celebrated novel, was originally published the year before Polonsky was blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. This brilliantly original work follows psychologist Carl Myers as he progresses from a purely objective interest in scientific problems to a profound concern with the human implications of those problems. A sweeping historical novel rich in psychological insights, The World Above reveals the legacy of the 1930s for the war years and the McCarthy era. At the same time it explores the personal impact of hard political reality with which Polonsky himself has been so well acquainted. ABRAHAM POLONSKY , at various times a screenwriter, director, lawyer, college English teacher, radio-writer, union educator, and military intelligence operative, lives in Beverly Hills, California.
