Zeltlager 2000

Honored Fellows link to the relevant sections from the IMS handbook Special Lectures Named Lectures Wald Memorial Lectures The Wald Memorial Lectures honors Professor Abraham Wald. The Wald Lecturer gives two, three or four one hour talks on one subject. This gives sufficient time to develop material in some detail and make it accessible to nonspecialists. The Wald Lecturer need not be an IMS member. Rietz Lectures The Rietz Lectures are named after the first President of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Professor Henry L. Rietz. The Lectures are intended to be of broad interest and are given every third year alternating with the Neyman and LeCam Lectures. The Rietz Lectures serve to clarify the relationship of statistical methodology and analysis to other fields. In the past, a special committee was appointed to select a Rietz Lecturer. Neyman Lectures The Neyman Lecture is to be given every third year, alternating with the Rietz and LeCam Lectures. The Neyman Lecture ordinarily will emphasize the interactions between statistical theory and scientific research.

The Foundations of Price Theory
Edited by Pascal Bridel Price theory has always been at the heart of economic theory. For the past two and a half centuries, economic theorists have been trying in many different ways to understand and explain the determination of relative prices between goods and services. Concentrating exclusively on the primary literature, this multi-volume set brings together for the first time the most significant texts of the many and and often conflicting intellectual endeavours to solve this most difficult of all economic issues. Though fully aware of the sometimes fundamental theoretical differences between the various approaches, this choice of texts suggests an interpretative framework linked to the common method used by successive schools of thought. For the past 250 years, economists have been working with one version or another of the so-called gravity theory: long-run, natural or equilibrium reasoning investigates the logical static determination of relative prices by theorists attempting to understand the fundamentals of market (or non-market) economies; short-run, market or disequilibrium reasoning scrutinises the formation of relative prices, that is, the dynamic process (including, possibly, institutional set-ups) necessary to bring about these natural/equilibrium prices.

Alan Wald on "The Radical Novel Reconsidered"interviewed by Chris Faatz for Reading the Left no. 4 (Fall 1998)
Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 10:05:37 -0800 To: READING THE LEFT@stayhungry.rs.itd.umich.edu From: Chris Faatz Subject: READING THE LEFT #4: Special edition In this special issue of READING THE LEFT, I'm pleased to bring you an interview with radical scholar, historian, and literary critic Alan Wald. Alan, a professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, is the author or co-author of several books and even more (often controversial!) essays on all matter of subjects, but primarily the history of the US left and the history of radical literature. In this essay, we briefly consider a new project he's undertaken, the overall editorial control of the University of Illinois Press' "Radical Novel Reconsidered" series. This interview may be re-run in any publication interested, however I ask two things: 1) contact me first, 2) no editing of content without prior agreement on my and Alan's part. Thanks, and enjoy.

Enhancing Capacity to Learn
Edited by Penelope J. Wald and Michael S. Castleberry
Excerpted from Educators as Learners: Creating a Professional Learning Community in Your School
ASCD, 2000 Vol. 3, Number 7, April 2000 Learning collaboratively is a complex process that requires learners to understand themselves, their motives, and their thoughts and beliefs, as well as the motives, thoughts, and beliefs of others. Understanding Self Our worldview or way of seeing influences our interpretation of the daily events in our lives. From the many stimuli that are constantly bombarding our senses, we pay attention to the stimuli we consider important. We select these stimuli because they are of interest to us. They may be compatible with our underlying assumptions and, therefore, affirming; or they may be incompatible, therefore creating a sense of disequilibrium. The following reflection by a teacher demonstrates the way the same stimuli can affirm two different sets of assumptions or worldviews: Two teachers are watching the same children play. The first teacher sees the children exploring their world as they collect sticks, dig with them, test their trajectory, and hear the sounds they make. The other teacher sees the children out of control as they collect sticks, spear them into the ground, throw them blindly, and bang them on the playground equipment. The worldview of the first teacher is shaped by her belief that children learn through active exploration. The worldview of the second is based on the belief that young children with sticks are dangerous. Each teacher has processed the stimuli in a way that is congruent with her personal worldview and is likely to take action based on the meaning she has attributed to the situation—the first teacher might expand the child's thinking while the second might briskly outlaw the use of sticks.
