  • This month I had the opportunity to talk to the mathematical genius John Wallis. He may not have been as well known as Newton or Kepler but he has contributed enormously to the world of mathematics. Here's how the interview went. ( I loved his charming English accent.) Interview Constructed by Lisa Liao '98. Spring 1997. Tell us a little about your childhood Mr. Wallis.
I had a hard boyhood to live without my father, who died when I was six years old. The grammar school I went to did not teach mathematics; therefore I did not encounter it until later; I was on vacation. Strange, isn't it? That's quite strange indeed. What events led up to your success? Well, let me see, I was more of a person who liked to study a wide variety of topics. I received my master's degree of arts and I served as a minister in London. I worked as the keeper of archives for the University. I was known to be an aggressive speaker in public rather than a reclusive mathematician. The first time my interests for mathematics was aroused was after I read the book Outred's Clavis Mathematics which is a fantastic book by the way. It had such an influence on me that I started to explore the realm of mathematics. I desired to write my own books that would be as exciting as the ones I read. After a few years I became attached to mathematics and physics the most. Tell us about some of your important discoveries that had an impact on society.

It was Mother's Day and the crowd was small. Most of the kids must have been with their mothers at "big church." I usually dread Mother's Day. All the talk about honoring and respect makes me squirm. I have never done a very good job with any of that. The worship service got to the part where the sermon or as we call it the message was to be performed. Today the usual ranting about honoring was replaced with a witty and humorous tag team about why Mothers are so essential to our survival. There was a top ten-list ala David Letterman about moms and it was funny. One of the number one reasons-there were several-to honor mom was the quote, "I brought in this world and I can take you out." A sentence that made me sit up straight followed. "Your mother carried you for nine months and gave birth to you," my stomach turned.

Name John WALLIS Birth 1632, Cornwall, England Death 13 Sep 1690, Gloucester, Essex, MA Spouses: Mary PHIPPEN Marriage 1659, Falmouth/Purpooduck Point, ME Children: Dorcas Josiah James UNNAMED ... Susanna Notes for John WALLIS John Wallis was born possibly in Cornwall, England, about 1627 or earlier, and died in Gloucester, Massachusetts, 13 September 1690. He married, probably in the late 1650s, Mary Phippen, who was baptised at Hingham, Massachusetts, 5 March 1643/4 and died, probably at Gloucester, after 29 April 1691, daughter of Joseph and Dorcas (Wood) Phippen.
John Wallis was a fisherman in Falmouth and Purpooduck, Maine, by 27 October 1650. He appeared in Falmouth court records from 1659 through 1663 and bought land at Purpooduck in 1667. A selectman in 1674 and 1680, he was a refugee in Salem and Gloucester in the first indian war, 1675; in the next he retired to Gloucester where he died 13 September 1690. Many of his descendants were also fisherman; others were engaged in various maritime pursuits. The importance of fishing to Gloucester from 1623 to the present has been expressed in many different economic and political formats. An amusing early anecdote regarding the role of fishing even had theological connections, albeit somewhat tangential. "The minister began his service by reminding the worshippers, 'We have come here to praise God,' when a voice from the congregation added, '... and to catch fish'."

John Wallis, a precursor of Newton
Prof. Harold M. Edwards,
Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences,
New York University
Abstract: In the period just before Newton and Leibniz, many mathematicians were dealing with questions involving limits and infinites. John Wallis's work "Arithmetic Infinitorum" contains an extraordinary argument involving infinites that gives, in a simple fashion, both "Wallis's formula" for pi as an infinite produce and a value for the factorial of 1/2. Newton himself stated that his first steps toward the binomial theorem for fractional exponents were inspired by this work of Wallis. The talk will be held at 4:00 in Alumnae Hall, room 116. Refreshments will be served at 3:30. All are welcome. Last modified: Wed Sep 22 09:25:41 EDT 1999 Math/CS Department / msmath@panther.adelphi.edu
