Press Release 23 May 2002
MOUNTAIN GUARDIANS URGE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGERS TO STOP AND THINK.
Call from environmental groups comes during the International Year of the Mountain.
Three of Britain’s highest mountain areas are being disturbed by increasing numbers of people taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge, leading environmental groups have warned. The growing numbers of people taking up the gruelling challenge to hike up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 24 hours, are causing traffic congestion, intrusion, litter and noise pollution during the summer months. The National Trust, the John Muir Trust, Snowdonia and Lake District National Park Authorities and the Highland Council met in the shadow of Ben Nevis last week to discuss the problems associated with challenge events and to consider what can done to reduce their impact. They called on all participants to follow the Code of Practice developed by the Institute of Charity Fundraising Managers when embarking on a Three Peaks Challenge.

    John Wallis Titt
John Wallis Titt was born into a farming family at Chitterne in 1841. His father was John Titt who farmed at Elm Farm and his mother was Eliza (nee Wallis) daughter of William Wallis another Chitterne farmer. After working on the family farm and for agricultural engineers and millwrights in Basingstoke and Devizes, he opened his own business in Portway, Warminster in 1872. In 1876 he established the Woodcock Ironworks, adjacent to his own Woodcock House and within 10 years was producing the wind engines which made him famous. When John Wallis Titt died in 1910, he left a thriving business, run by his two sons, which was engaged in many engineering projects, in addition to the manufacture of farm and waterworks equipment, it also handled early bicycles and cars. The company still exists now, in Frome, Somerset. Back to History Back to Chitterne People
