Shaffer (1880-1945) further documents the life and career of the Walterboro businessman and farmer who later distinguished himself as an historical and economic researcher and writer. The bulk of the new unit resides in two volumes. The larger of these, a scrapbook consisting of material dating between 1894 and 1945, contains the record of Shaffer's short published writings, his speaking engagements and other commitments of his public life, along with the responses he received by letter and in the press to his various presentations. The Greenville News reproduced his next Atlantic Monthly essay ("A New South-The Textile Development") on 8 October 1922, calling it "the fairest and most intelligent article that has been written about this section of the South." His third essay for The Atlantic Monthly ("The New South-The Negro Migration," September 1923) which was reprinted in The State on 9 September, generated a great deal of comment. G.A. Cardwell, agricultural and industrial agent of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company in Wilmington, stated in a letter of 15 September-"I consider this one of the most enlightening and complete discussions of the negro migrant question that I have read." And Charleston businessman Henry F. Welch wrote on 18 September to say-"This is the most sensible writing on the subject that we have read."

    James Waring and descendants.
Our family is descended from James Waring, born in 1809, maybe in New York, maybe somewhere else. Nothing is known of his siblings or his parents. His story is a real mystery. There are records of Warings coming from Ireland, and others believe the family comes from England. If we ever solve the mystery of James'ancestry, perhaps we will know. James married Margaret Campbell (of Pennsylvania-Dutch descent) and had five girls and three boys. The names of the girls are not known. What is known is that James and Margaret (my great-great-great grandparents) had three sons:
    • Ezra Waring, who was born August 18, 1848 in Penyan New York. Married Ann Eugenia Bruce on August 19, 1873. Ezra died December 2, 1917.

    Waring's Problem

In his Meditationes algebraicae , Waring (1770, 1782) proposed a generalization of Lagrange's four-square theorem , stating that every rational integer is the sum of a fixed number g n ) of n th powers of integers , where n is any given positive integer and g n ) depends only on n . Waring originally speculated that , and . In 1909, Hilbert proved the general conjecture using an identity in 25-fold multiple integrals (Rademacher and Toeplitz 1957, pp. 52-61). In Lagrange's four-square theorem Lagrange proved that , where 4 may be reduced to 3 except for numbers of the form (as proved by Legendre ; Hardy 1999, p. 12). In the early twentieth century, Dickson, Pillai, and Niven proved that Hilbert Hardy and Vinogradov proved , and this was subsequently reduced to by Balasubramanian et al. Liouville proved (using Lagrange's four-square theorem and Liouville polynomial identity ) that , and this was improved to 47, 45, 41, 39, 38, and finally by Wieferich. See Rademacher and Toeplitz (1957, p. 56) for a simple proof. Chen (1964) proved that Dickson (1936), Pillai (1936), and Niven also conjectured an explicit formula for

    Prince Edward County
Prince Edward County, including Picton is the fourth wine region in Ontario. It is about 2 hours drive east of Toronto. The growing season is as long as the Niagara Region, but the winters are colder. Vineyards are next to Lake Ontario, which has a moderating effect on air temperatures. The area is already the site of rich farm land. Local landmarks are Sandbanks Provincial Park Black River Cheese , and many farm markets. tourists already come to the area for the Sandbanks Provincial Park, quaint towns, shopping, museums, fine dining and bed and breakfasts. Also, small inns such as The Bloomfield Inn Picton Harbour Inn Tip of the Bay Hotel , and Merrill Inn. More luxurious accommodation can be found at The Waring House Restaurant and Inn on Hwy 33, and Isaiah Tubbs Inn and Resort at West Lake. In nearby Belleville, the Ramada Inn is a full service hotel. Close by, the Holiday Inn Kingston and Four Points Hotel Kingston are also recommended by the webmaster. For more information all of the above go to the official Prince Edward County website Picture - Waupoos Winery Store Three wineries are open in the region: The County Cider Company, Peddlesden Wines and Waupoos Estate Winery.
