STADT MOERS PARK, WHISTON - HISTORY
STADT MOERS PARK, WHISTON History of local area. The Late 1800's

A map dating from 1897 shows the area now known as Stadt Moers Park and its surrounding district. The Latham's House was located approximately where the Visitor Centre stands today. To the east of this point was a row of houses called Victoria Row (formerly Dales Row), these stood behind what is now called The Quarry Inn (Station Hotel on the map) which is along Pottery Lane, over the other side of the M57 Motorway from the Visitor Centre today.
The remains of Latham's Farm can still be seen to this day scattered amongst the Visitor Centre's grounds, mostly covered in vegetation. In the summer of 1999 whilst undertaking some grounds works a number of cobblestones were dug up. These were found to be from the original farm track that ran between the farm and the house, into the fields south of the railway (see map). Latham's House
The house, which once stood in the vicinity of the Park's Visitor Centre, is thought to be named after the Latham family who owned land in Whiston in the 16th Century. The house dated from 1642, and during the Civil War was owned by the Lees family. It was adjacent to a clay pit, a farm and a coal mine. The house was converted into flats prior to its eventual demolition in the 1960's. Some of the trees in the grounds of the Visitor Centre today are remnants of the fruit orchards that once occupied the gardens of Latham's House.

Faber and Faber, London, 1951.
Bellamy, Hans Schindler. Moons, Myths, and Man.
Faber and Faber, London, 1936.
Bellamy, following the "ice cosmology" of Hoerbiger , suggested that humans had experienced two major catastrophes in the last 50,000 years. The first was the disintegration and impact of the earth's previous moon. The second was the capture of the earth's current moon. Bellamy collated hundreds of myths from all over the world to support his ideas. Velikovsky used a number of these myths in Worlds in Collision Braghine, Alexander. The Shadow of Atlantis.
Dutton, New York, 1940.
Braghine collates geological, astronomical, historical, and mythological evidence to support the idea of at least one and possibly two global catastrophes having been witnessed by humans during the Holocene. He suggested that a giant comet entering the inner solar system around 4,000 B.C. altered the orbits of the earth and Venus, at least, and also caused a variety of cataclysmic events on the earth itself. Braghine was aware of the dating problems associated with catastrophes, so he was willing to credit the ideas of Bellamy and others who suggested an earlier catastrophe around 9,000 to 10,000 B.C. Bragine rejected many of the inaccurate "proofs" of the existence of Atlantis put forth by earlier authors (e.g., there is no wild version of the banana plant). He was also aware of most previous catastrophists and, unlike Velikovsky, he gave them due credit and summarized their ideas. Much of the material presented in Braghine appears in Velikovsky's later works, although Velikovsky never mentions Braghine.

WHITBORN
WHISTON—WHITBREAD he has brought to bear upon the execution of his nearly three hundred coppers, ensure, and have indeed already compassed, the acceptance of him as a master among masters in that art of etching. Rembrandt's, Van Dyck's, Meryon's, Claude's, are, in fact, the only names which there is full warranty for pronouncing beside his own. See also T. R. Way and G. R. Dennis, The Art of J. McN. Whistler (1901); F. Wedmore, Mr Whistler's Etchings; Theodore Duret, Histoire de J. McN. Whistler et de son ceuvre (1904); Mortimer Menpes, V/histler as I knew him; W. G. Bowdoin, Whistler, the Man and his Work (1902); Catalogue of Memorial Exhibition (International Society, 1905); and E. R. and J. Pennell, The Life of James McNeill Whistler'(1908). (F. WE.) Whiston is a striking example of the association of an entirely paradoxical bent of mind with proficiency in the exact sciences. He also illustrates the possibility of arriving at rationalistic conclusions in theology without the slightest tincture of the rationalistic temper. He was not only paradoxical to the verge of craziness, but intolerant to the verge of bigotry. " I had a mind," he says, " to hear Dr (John) Gill preach. But, being informed that he had written a folio book on the Canticles, I declined to go to hear him." When not engaged in controversy he was not devoid of good sense. He often saw men and things very clearly, and some of his ban mots are admirable. WHITAKER, JOSEPH (1820-1895), English publisher, was born in London on the 4th of May 1820, and apprenticed to a bookseller at the age of fourteen. After a long experience with various bookselling firms, he began business on his own account as a theological publisher. In January 1858 he started the Bookseller, and for 1869 published the first issue of Whitaker's A Imanack, the annual work of reference, which also met with immediate success. In 1874 he published the first edition of the Reference Catalogue of Current Literature, of which several editions have since appeared. Whitaker died at Enfield on the isth of May 1895. He had been the father of fifteen children.
