Everest Challenge '98
Mission and Timeline "Tom Whittaker's amputee-push to Mount Everest's summit may bethe last great challenge in Himalayan climbing." Greg Child EVEREST CHALLENGE '98 is an expedition to place
the first disabled mountaineers on the roof of the world. Background Highlights and Editorial-a short preview of Everest Challenge '98 Mission Everest Challenge '98
is a global initiative to assist the integration of people with disabilities. Everest Challenge '98 's mission is to make history and redefine the possible. But more important; it is the inspiration to create a legacy for disabled children. Via the Internet, in schools world wide, Everest Challenge '98 is opening the hearts and minds of children to the capabilities of their disabled peers through inspiration and leadership. Everest Challenge Summit Climb. April -May 1998 Mount Everest was first climbed in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since it's discovery as the highest mountain in the world, Everest remained aloof for more than 100 years. Since then some 600 people have stood on her summit. No longer do we climb in hob-nail boots and Norfolk jackets, and to some the challenge seems diminished. However, for a disabled mountaineer, technology has not reduced the challenge; it has brought it into reach. In May 1998, via Sir Edmund's South Col route, Whittaker and a disabled Sherpa intend to create history by being the first disabled mountaineers to stand on the roof of the world. The magnitude of this undertaking was summed up by Greg Child, who partnered Tom on the North Ridge in 1995. He said "Tom's amputee push to Everest's summit may be the last great challenge in Himalayan climbing."

From The New York Times Thursday, May 11, 1989
"O. Edmund Clubb Is Dead at 88; China Hand and McCarthy Target"
O. Edmund Clubb, a United States Foreign Service officer who became a major target of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy's investigation of supposedly disloyal Americans in the State Department in the early 1950's, died of Parkinson's disease Tuesday at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He was 88 years old and lived in Manhattan and in Palenville, N.Y. Mr. Clubb served for more than two decades in the Foreign Service. He was the last American diplomat stationed in Beijing after the Communist takeover in 1949, and it fell upon him, as Consul General , to haul down the flag there in April 1950. Returned to Washington, he was named chief of the China desk at the State Department, only to be suspended a year later as a security risk. One of his many character witnesses, and army colonel, wrote of him, "I always thought you were secure to the point of being boring." He was nevertheless condemned by a loyalty board. Cleared on appeal, but assigned to an obscure job, he concluded that his career was finished and submitted his resignation. Those Who 'Lost China' Mr. Clubb, along with other Government officials, was stigmatized as having "lost China." Unlike the others so treated, he had not been involved in the wartime dispute over policy toward Chiang Kai-shek. Mr. Clubb's misfortune came long before, in a brief encounter with Whittaker Chambers in 1932.

A SHORT HISTORY OF DIAS AND ITS
APPLIED PROBABILITY GROUP
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies was established in 1940 by Act of the Irish Parliament and is funded by a Grant-in-Aid from the government through the Department of Education; since 1988, the source of the funding has been the National Lottery. The functions and duties assigned under the Act to the School of Theoretical Physics are:
  • the investigation of the mathematical principles of natural philosophy;
  • the training of advanced students in methods of original research.
These are an expression of the priciples set out by Abraham Flexner. Today there are two permanent members of the School: Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh and John Lewis.
O'Raifeartaigh has a group of six post-doctoral students; together they work on problems in theoretical particle physics and are funded from the Grant-in-Aid. The group attracts students from the USA, India and Japan, as well as from Ireland and the rest of the European community.
Lewis has a group of two assistant professors and six post-graduate students working in applied probability theory, funded by the European Commission. This group uses probability theory to solve problems in telecommunications. The Applied Probability Group in association with Telia, the Swedish telecom, and the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, have an ESPRIT contract to develop techniques for resource allocation for multimedia communication and processing using on-line measurement. So far, two patents have been filed and plans are being made for the commercialisation of a device for measurement-based admission control in broadband networks.

ELECTRODYNAMIC THEORY
Dear Sir - Sir Edmund Whittaker, in his historical writings about the theory of electricity, [WHITTAKER, E: 'Aether and Electricity (Classical Theories)', (Nelson, 1951), pp. 84-87] reports that Amptre based his analysis of the mutual action of currents upon the following experimental observations:
(a) the effect of a current is reversed when the direction of the current is reversed,
(b) the effect of a current flowing in a circuit twisted into small sinuosities is the same as if the circuit were smoothed out,
(c) the force exerted by a closed circuit on an element of another circuit is at right angles to the latter,
(d) the force between two elements of circuits is unaffected when all linear dimensions are increased proportionately, the current-strengths remaining unaltered.
Although these data are adequate to allow the formulation of the laws of forces between a closed current circuit and an individual current element, they do not allow one to obtain a conclusive result for the law of force between two individual current elements.
There has been much speculation on this subject. It assumes importance when considering effects between individual charged particles in motion and is therefore of some significance in plasma physics.

Whittaker's Influence
Working along the lines of Nolan's observations, de Valera formulated a broad outline of his approach: the state would take over Dunsink as an astronomical centre, with Whittaker or a similar person in charge. Once he was installed, consideration could be given to what other geophysical work could be associated with Dunsink as a centre and also to the possibility of a national physical laboratory being established there. In a flurry of activity during April 1938, he proposed his secheme for Dunsink to his cabinet colleagues in the Departments of Education and Finance who did not object. On the advice of his former professor, Edmund Whittaker, he contacted the Meteorological Office and Trinity College regarding the transfer of Dunsink Observatory to the State. Whittaker was pessimistic about the future of Dunsink but optimistic about the possibility of setting up an institute for advanced studies. `The time was oppertune for making Ireland a haven for scholars and scientists who were being driven from the Continent of Europe', he told de Valera. Paradoxically, de Valera's meeting with Whittaker and the Provost of Trinity, Dr Thrift, to discuss Dunsink, shifted the focus of his attention from Dunsink towards establishment of an institute for advanced studies. This became a priority while the future of Dunsink remained unresolved. De Valera forged ahead with the establishment of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Legislation was passed in 1940 which made provision for a School of Celtic Studies and Theortical Physics; it also provided for the establishment of additional schools by Government Order.
