Serial #38 Oct 13 2002, John Whittaker - Long Beach, California
Just another West epoxy system glue-up. Bits and pieces of red and white oak from the wood bin. The triangular hub has a number of filled lead shot pockets therein. The Mapleshade "Heavyfooters" are on 1/2" threaded brass stock for leveling adjustment - for now the table sits on the 3/4" glass plate, which has two 'hot/cold' gel pads underneath. Rewiring the old Infinity Black Widow tonearm with A-M Systems silver/Teflon wire in (0.0130" diameter) was the hardest thing I've done in a long time. Even with a $100 cartridge (for now) the Teres sounds great! A Ladegaard DIY air bearing arm is in the future. John

I See Dead People II
Dr. John Harbison
My arrival in the Burke Theatre was typically haphazard and considerably late. I missed Dr. Whittaker's talk, stumbling in during the appreciative applause, and found some floor to sit on while the bearded Dr. Harbison fumbled with his slides. Here in Ireland, John Harbison is something of a celebrity. With less than four million inhabitants in the republic, one state pathologist was, for many years, more than enough. Everyone in the country is used to news footage of the tweedy doctor, along with the words '...the State Pathologist, Dr. John Harbison, arrived at the scene to carry out a post- mortem examination...' In recent years, Harbison's workload has doubled. This may be less to do with any sudden increase in murder than an altered definition of a 'suspicious' death. However, Harbison reserved commentary on any change in the murder rate, instead respecting professional demarcation by referring us to the country's statisticians. While he used to examine some 100 bodies every year, Harbison now looks at around 200, along with Dr. Marie Cassidy, who was appointed Assistant State Pathologist in 1997.
Harbison's talk was less of a detailed lecture, and more of a cosy wander through his 'what I did when I certainly was not on my holidays' slides. At the beginning, he explained that due to size of Ireland's population, the danger of offending someone with his slides was significant. Some years ago, he was tutoring newly recruited gardai on how best to preserve a crime scene. The slides showed a murder case. a woman who had been killed in a forest. All that was found were some teeth and bones. Afterwards, he was approached by a young garda who asked if Harbison could refrain from using them again. The murder victim was the policeman's mother.

Dr John R. Whittaker John Whittaker was born in Sheffield in 1952 and holds a B.A. and a Ph.D. in French from the University of Hull, also a Graduate Certificate in Education in Modern Languages and English. More recently he acquired the degree of M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Leicester. He taught for ten years in schools in Kent and Cumbria, including a time as Head of Modern Languages, before becoming Senior Lecturer in French at La Sainte Union College of Higher Education, Southampton. He is an expert in French Romanticism, and has written for many years the section 'French Studies: The Romantic Era' in The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies . Although his early experience of translation and interpreting was in a non-literary context, particularly medecine and engineering, he taught translation to final-year undergraduates and developed an interest in literary translation through contributing to the Encyclopedia of Literary Translation into English , published by Fitzroy Dearborn in 2000. Since joining the Performance Translation Centre, his main interests have focused on the way in which the French theatre influenced the British and Irish theatres of the nineteenth century.

Volume 117, Number 22, May 23, 1997 Athletic Profile: John Whittaker
    By Shawn Mussulman
With his small stature, most people would be intimidated, but not him. Not this one. Just the sound of his name, John Whittaker, invokes terror into the hearts of competing athletes. Whittaker, however, is no ordinary coxswain. Freshman Whittaker displayed his abilities on junior tennis and cross country. Once faculty and students saw Whittaker perform, they realized he had a promising future. Sophomore Whittaker returned to cross country. After an endurance-building season, Whittaker made up his mind to give back to Griswold when he signed up to play winter house sports: basketball and volleyball. After being convinced to try out for crew, Whittaker soon found his sport: a sport that would, in time, augment his fame. As the hard-working coxswain for the Novice crew boat, he aimed for the Varsity boat. Junior Whittaker showed diligence when he returned to cross country. In the winter, he returned to the basketball team. Although the team struggled, Whittaker's skills carried the squad. In the spring, the crew coaches made the decision to place Whittaker at the helm of the Varsity boat. Whittaker took on the serious position, producing results. Teamed with four seniors, Whittaker made great strides throughout the season. The team had high hopes for the Stotesbury Regatta, the oldest high school regatta. In the field of teams from across U.S. and Canada, Whittaker's boat placed fifth: the best finish by a L'ville varsity men's crew in recent years.
