'Based on the recent proof by Andrew Wiles' From an email forwarded to me by a fellow staff member. Morbid curiosity alone may drag me to this piece, which for some reason hasn't folded in the eight months since it opened. Ah, I see; it contains more caricatures of eccentric mathematicians than math, or even vague references to math itself. Still - it's a musical about math, and there's something at least marginally encouraging about that, in some twisted way. The Clay Mathematics Institute and The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute present the West-Coast premiere screening of Fermat's Last Tango. Music by Joshua Rosenblum, book by Joanne Sydney Lessner, and lyrics by Lessner and Rosenblum. Based on the recent proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles. July 16th 7:30 P.M. Roda Theatre
2015 Addison Street, Berkeley Admission is free as the event is underwritten by the Clay Mathematics Institute On hand will be mathematicians Arthur Jaffe (CMI) Ken Ribet (UC Berkeley), Karl Rubin (Stanford) and special guests. The event is taking place during the CMI 2001 Summer School on the Global Theory of Minimal Surfaces, which will be held at MSRI from June 25-July 27 and is produced by David Hoffman, who is also Director of the Summer School.

Proving Fermat's Theorem
Date: 22 Jun 1995 00:15:01 -0400 From: Dionisio Laeber Fleitas Subject: Fermat's Last Theorem Has Fermat's Last Theorem already been proved ? If so, send me the idea of the proof, please. Date: 22 Jun 1995 09:13:31 -0400 From: Dr. Ken Subject: Re: Fermat's last theorem Hello there! Yes, most people accept that Fermat's Last Theorem has been proven. I say "most" because there are only a handful of people in the world who can even understand the whole proof (it's huge!), so it's hard to say whether all steps are completely rigorous. The general feeling is that the proof is complete. Here's something that was in the Frequently Asked Questions file for the newsgroup sci.math: http://daisy.uwaterloo.ca/~alopez-o/math-faq/node1.html gopher://e-math.ams.org/11/lists/fermat Where you'll find documents entitled: Network Message Reporting the Wiles Announcement (Ribet) Fermat's Last Theorem Discussion (LISTSERV) News Item in Notices of the AMS (Ribet) Introduction to Fermat's Last Theorem (Cox, Amherst) Did Fermat Prove His Last Theorem?
