Alexander Wilson 2001 UNB Service Award Recipient
Dr. Alexander (Sandy) Wilson is recognized for his substantial record of service to the UNBSJ community. This service takes many forms, but includes serving on a large number of important committees, including Senate, Curriculum Committees, Budget Committees and Timetable Committees. Dr. Wilson has also been very active in new program development. Committees such as these and new program development require considerable time and patience and Sandy brings a very special kind of commitment and dedication to this work. Dr. Wilson is also recognized for his service as a Departmental Chair. He has served as Chair of the Psychology Department for two terms. He has an excellent reputation for his objectivity, fairness, and commitment. Recently Dr, Wilson was called on to serve as acting Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science for a period of two years. Dr. Wilson met the challenge of simultaneously chairing two departments and did a superb job as the Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science during a period in which the department was introducing a new four-year program and restructuring. A professor of statistics and statistical analysis, Dr. Wilson has also "plied his trade," so to speak, assisting in the development and analysis of a number of surveys designed to help us better understand recruitment and retention issues.

"Machloden" is a song I wrote in college and first performed at a Madrigal Feast in 1999. Using some free models provided by Hash Inc., I thought animating the song might be a great learning experience before I get into some of the more involved projects currently in "pre-production." Requires Quicktime 6. Enjoy March 12, 2003

"I dare say you will smile at my presumption when I tell you that I have seriously begun to make a collection of drawings of the birds to be found in Pennsylvania, or that occasionally pass through it: twenty-eight, as a beginning, I send for your opinion."
Alexander Wilson, in a letter to William Bartram, naturalist, July, 1805 "Enlightened men living in a democracy readily discover that nothing can confine them, hold them, or force them to be content with their present lot."
"As soon as the crowd begins to take an interest in the labors of the mind it finds out that to excel in some of them is a powerful aid to the acquisition of fame, power or wealth. Restless ambition born of equality turn to this as to all other directions. The number of those studying science, literature, and the arts becomes immense. There is vast activity in the realms of the mind; every one tries to blaze a trail for himself and attract public attention."
"It was a misfortune that he wrote so much verse, for the greater part of it is drearily prosaic and the few pieces that are really good are like modest little poppies that have caught the bright colors of the sunlight and the freshness of the dewdrop, but are overlooked in the great field of dry stubble." (J.S. Wilson, p. 130)

Alexander Wilson was educated at the University of St Andrews. After this he was an apprentice to a surgeon in St Andrews, then he moved to London. In 1739 he returned to St Andrews and, in 1742, he set up a type foundry. Two years later he moved to Glasgow where, in 1760, he was appointed to the chair of astronomy, a post he held until 1784. Wilson made many observations of sunspots using a geometric argument to show that they were depressions in the Sun. A similar theory had been proposed by La Hire and by Cassini Wilson also published Thoughts on General Gravitation (1770), in which he attempted to answer Newton 's question What hinders the fixed stars from falling upon one another. Wilson's answer, that the entire universe rotates about a centre, is of course incorrect. He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of St Andrews in 1763 and was a founding member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

General Information The Wilson Society, founded in 1888, is a world-wide organization of nearly 2500 people who share a curiosity about birds. Named in honor of Alexander Wilson , the Father of American Ornithology, the Society publishes a quarterly journal of ornithology, The Wilson Bulletin, and holds annual meetings Perhaps more than any other biological science, ornithology has been advanced by the contributions of persons in other chosen professions. The Wilson Society recognizes the unique role of the serious amateur in ornithology. Fundamental to its mission, the Society has distinguished itself with a long tradition of promoting a strong working relationship among all who study birds. Each year the Wilson Society awards a number of small grants for ornithological research In addition to receiving The Wilson Bulletin four times a year, and being served by the Josselyn Van Tyne Memorial Library, members also receive the bimonthly Ornithological Newsletter and a copy of The Flock (a directory of ornithologists), both of which are published jointly by the Ornithological Societies of North America (OSNA), which includes the Wilson Ornithological Society, the American Ornithologists' Union, the Cooper Ornithological Society, the Association of Field Ornithologists, CIPAMEX, the Society of Canadian Ornithologists, the Society of Caribbean Ornithology, The Waterbird Society, the Pacific Seabird Group, and the Raptor Research Foundation. The Ornithological Newsletter provides news about the Societies, requests for assistance from researchers, professional positions, worldwide opportunities for field assistants (both paid and volunteer), graduate student positions and support, information on grants, new publications, scientific bird meetings, and news of members.
