43. THE ENIGMATIC ENCRUSTER CHAUNOGRAPTUS FROM THE RICHMOND STAGE OF THE CINCINNATIA
Graptolitelike fossils from the Upper Ordovician of Ohio and Indiana. By J.M. St.john and M.A. wilson.
http://www.graptolite.home.pl/cagliostro/rosencreutz/encruster.htm
THE ENIGMATIC ENCRUSTER CHAUNOGRAPTUS FROM THE RICHMOND STAGE OF THE CINCINNATIAN SERIES (UPPER ORDOVICIAN) OF SOUTHWESTERN OHIO AND SOUTHEASTERN INDIANA James M. St. John and Mark A. Wilson A relatively diverse biota of encrusting and boring organisms is present upon organic and inorganic hard substrates throughout rocks of the Cincinnatian Series (Upper Ordovician) of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. Specimens of the enigmatic encruster Chaunograptus are relatively uncommon, but occur principally in Richmond Stage rocks, particularly in the Waynesville, Liberty, and Whitewater Formation. It is commonly associated with trepostome and cyclostome bryozoans, cornulitids, sphenothallids, and borings. Chaunograptus appears to be a colonial organism consisting of thin, black, irregularly branching strands that are commonly seen to encrust hardgrounds, cobbles, pebbles, and strophomenid brachiopodes. The strands are typically about 0.1 mm in diameter, and consist of almost pure carbon, possibly indicating an original chitinous or proteinaceous composition. Undoubted thecal-type or cyst-like structures have not been observed. Commonly, only the basal walls of strands of Chaunograptus are preserved, but collapsed or still-inflated hollow tubes also occur. Colony growth upon brachiopod shells is characterized as simple runner-type, with relatively few branching points. Colonies on inorganic hard substrates, however, are characterized by irregular and hightly contorted growth forms.

(faster download) Home Index Schedule ... S-Z John Karl Wilson Myth of Political Correctness (Duke University Press, 1995) From Subject mjmonar@acadcomp.cmp.ilstu.edu Review: John K. Wilson's "Myth of Political Review: J. K. Wilson, The Myth of P.C. (Stroh) Date: Fri, 1 Mar 1996 15:15:14 -0600 From: mjmonar@acadcomp.cmp.ilstu.edu Subject: Review: John K. Wilson's "Myth of Political Review of John Karl Wilson's "Myth of Political Correctness." (Duke University Press, 1995) Michael Monardo The term political correctness was originally used as a criticism liberals placed on themselves for being too radical. Shortly after Reagan took office the concept was applied by conservatives against these radical liberals for the purpose of exploiting extremist doctrines in the realms of education and government. This conservative view took political correctness out of context and attached it to those in favor of abortion rights, multiculturalism, affirmative action, and environmentalism. The book is meant to open the eyes of both liberals and conservatives to what is really behind the myth of political correctness. The conservative allegations of political correctness corrupting American colleges and universities is unfounded. The belief that our institutions of higher learning are slowly coming under the control of left-wing radicals who want nothing more than to brainwash their student bodies is unsubstanciated. Nonetheless, it is one which has attracted widespread media attention in recent years.

CURSE OF THE SOUL MAN
by Mohair Slim Its not that other musical eras didn't have their moments of acute misfortune... Pre-war blues had the poisoning of a precocious young guitarist named Robert Johnson, and Bessie 'The Empress of the Blues' Smith expired when she parked her Ford inside a telephone pole in 1939. ... its just that an examination of music history reveals that being a soul artist in the 1960s was an extremely hazardous profession. Injury and death were always lurking around the next (highway) corner and behind the next (cheap motel room) door - and there was no union is sight. Little Willie John - Napoleon-Complex, Detroit-Style The early death of Little Willie John, widely regarded as the greatest of the proto-soul pioneers, surprised no-one who knew him. Born William Edgar John in Arkansas in 1937, his family moved North to Detroit and by the age of 14 he was performing on the local R&B circuit, where he soon established a reputation as a baby-faced ne'er-do-well with an extra-ordinary singing gift. His avocations as a brawler, gambler and womaniser were legend in Detroit - when he wasn't swiggin' he was swingin'. An early employer, bandleader Paul Williams, said "He was a wild little kid - he was tough ... I knew he was going to be trouble". LWJ's behaviour began badly and trailed off from there. In Miami in 1964, he skipped bail on an assault charge for attacking a man with a broken bottle. Two months later, while relaxing at a post-gig party at the Magic Inn, Seattle, LWJ got in a fight over a woman with an ex-convict, Kevin Roundtree (6 foot, 200 pounds). Before his opponent could get the words out to say "yeh? you and what army" the diminutive LWJ plunged his favourite knife into Roundtree's ample chest.
