In 1935 she published her important paper on double beta-decay, representing a direct application of techniques she had used for her thesis, but in an entirely different context. Later, James Franck joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins and renewed his close personal relationship with the Mayers. Also in that later period, Edward Teller became a member of the faculty of George Washington University, in nearby Washington, D.C., and she looked to him for guidance in the developing frontiers of theoretical physics. At about the same time, she became deeply involved in a collaboration with Joseph Mayer in writing the book Statistical Mechanics

Last revision: Oct. 3, 2002 LAGRANGE MULTIPLIER. The term "Lagrange's method of undetermined multipliers" appears in J. W. Mellor, Higher Mathematics for Students of Chemistry and Physics (1912) [James A. Landau]. The term "Lagrange multiplier rule" appears in "The Problem of Mayer with Variable End Points," Gilbert Ames Bliss, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Vol. 19, No. 3. (Jul., 1918). Lagrange multiplier is found in "Necessary Conditions in the Problems of Mayer in the Calculus of Variations," Gillie A. Larew, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Vol. 20, No. 1. (Jan., 1919): "The [lambda]'s appearing in this sum are the functions of x sometimes called Lagrange multipliers." LAGRANGE'S THEOREM. Formule de Lagrange appears in (1797-1800) by Lacroix. Lagrange's theorem appears in An Elementary Treatise on Curves, Functions and Forms (1846) by Benjamin Peirce: "The theorem (650) under this form of application, has been often called Laplace's Theorem ; but, regarding this change as obvious and insignificant, we do not hesitate to discard the latter name, and give the whole honor of the theorem to its true author, Lagrange."

Last revision: Dec. 31, 2002 RADIAN. According to Cajori (1919, page 484): An isolated matter of interest is the origin of the term 'radian', used with trigonometric functions. It first appeared in print on June 5, 1873, in examination questions set by James Thomson at Queen's College, Belfast. James Thomson was a brother of Lord Kelvin. He used the term as early as 1871, while in 1869 Thomas Muir, then of St. Andrew's University, hesitated between 'rad', 'radial' and 'radian'. In 1874, T. Muir adopted 'radian' after a consultation with James Thomson. In a footnote, Cajori gives a reference to Nature, In a letter appearing in the April 7, 1910, Nature, Thomas Muir wrote: "I wrote to him [i.e., to Alexander J. Ellis, in 1874], and he agreed at once for the form 'radian,' on the ground that it could be viewed as a contraction for 'radial angle'..." In a letter appearing in the June 16, 1910, Nature, James Thomson wrote: "I shall be very pleased to send Dr. Muir a copy of my father's examination questions of June, 1873, containing the word 'radian.' ...It thus appears that 'radian' was thought of independently by Dr. Muir and my father, and, what is really more important than the exact form of the name, they both independently thought of the necessity of giving a name to the unit-angle" [Dave Cohen]. A post on the Internet indicated that Thomas Muir (1844-1934) claimed to have coined the term in 1869, and that Muir and Ellis proposed the term as a contraction of "radial angle" in 1874. After the Jewish scholars had been removed from German universities and research institutions, the propagators of "Aryan physics", Philipp Lenard and Johannes Stark, intensified their campaign against Max Planck, Max von Laue, Arnold Sommerfeld and, even more strongly, the junior Heisenberg, whom they considered the main representatives of the "Jewish, internationalistic physics", i.e. especially the modern relativity and quantum theories. Heisenberg resisted successfully dangerous defamations, but ultimately he was denied to succeed his teacher Sommerfeld on the Munich chair. Further, the conditions for research in modern physics in Germany deteriorated dramatically, while the United States took over the lead in most fields.
A number of Leipzig colleagues - besides the already mentioned ones also the physico-chemist Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer and the members of his private circle of professors, "Coronella" - helped Heisenberg in this difficult period, in which he also founded with Elisabeth Schumacher a fast growing family. Few travels abroad, as well as his still fairly international Leipzig theoretical seminar, allowed him to keep some contacts to the world-wide community of quantum physicists. Despite the war threatening Europe and receiving lucrative offers from prestigiuos American universities, Heisenberg returned in August 1939 to Germany, where he had bought recently a summer refuge in the Bavarian Alps.

Introduction to "Theory of Species" by Bergeron, Labelle and Leroux
Advances in mathematics occur in one of two ways.
The first occurs by the solution of some outstanding problem, such as the
Bieberbach conjecture or Fermat's conjecture. Such solutions are justly
acclaimed by the mathematical community. The solution of every famous
mathematical problem is the result of joint effort of a great many
mathematicians. It always comes as an unexpected application of theories
that were previously developed without a specific purpose, theories whose
effectiveness was at first thought to be highly questionable.
Mathematicians realized long ago that it is hopeless to get the lay public to understand the miracle of unexpected effectiveness of theory. The public, misled by two hundred years of Romantic fantasies, clamors for
