Chronology of Probabilists and Statisticians Page George Undy Yule George Undy Yule, a student of Pearson, contributed to and expanded upon Pearson’s work on fitting scew curves in 1891 and1896. Yule published a paper on correlation in Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (1897). This paper applied the theory of correlation to problems of social sciences and associated correlation to the method of least squares. In 1900 Yule presented formulas for measuring contingency tables, which proved to be superior to Pearson’s formulas presented at the same time. Yule also did much work on regression and invented time series analysis.> Emile Borel Borel , a French mathematician, is largely noted for his work on the theory of functions of real variables. His work in this topic and measure theory led him to develop the strong law of large numbers William Sealey Gosset While working as a chemist in Guinness brewery in Dublin, Gosset, an English chemist, developed the student’s t-test (1899). This test is used to test hypotheses about m , the mean, for small samples from normal populations. In order to conceal the brewery’s knowledge and application of such a test, Gosset published his findings anonymously under the name of Student.

    ALBERT TUCKER
CAREER, PART 2 This is a continuation of the account of the career of Albert Tucker that was begun in the interview conducted by Terry Speed in September 1975. This recording was made in March 1977 by Evar Nering at his apartment in Scottsdale, Arizona. Tucker: I have recently received the tapes that Speed made and find that these tapes carried my history up to approximately 1938. So the plan is to continue the history. In the late '30s I was working in combinatorial topology with not a great deal of results to show. I guess I was really more interested in my teaching. I had an opportunity to teach an undergraduate course in topology, combinatorial topology that is, classification of 2-dimensional surfaces and that sort of thing. I also had an opportunity to develop a course in transformational geometry. At the graduate level I was attempting from time to time a course on n-dimensional manifolds. In one graduate course that I gave around 1938, I had a very sharp critic in the audience, John W. Tukey. Every time I came up with a definition of a combinatorial manifold Tukey would come up with a counterexample. The course ended in a draw. He was a graduate student at that time.

(also LEON HENKIN , with ALBERT TUCKER This is an interview session on 18 May 1984 at the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Interview subjects are Wallace Givens, Abraham Taub, and Angus Taylor with, as they say in certain parts of California, a guest appearance by Leon Henkin. The interviewers are Albert Tucker and William Aspray. Aspray: Since you can be here for only a short time, Mr. Henkin, would you say a little bit about how you were attracted to Princeton and some of your experiences? Henkin: Well, I was an undergraduate at Columbia, Class of '41. I was interested both in philosophy and mathematics. The only person on the faculty at Columbia interested in modern logic was Ernest Nagel, the famous philosopher of science. There was no one in the mathematics department at all. Still, I was attracted more to the mathematical side of the subject. I remember that in my senior year F.J. Murray, who had surely been at Princeton in the '30s ... Tucker: Oh, yes.

Chemical Etiology of Nucleic Acid Structure
Albert Eschenmoser Systematic chemical studies indicate that the capability of Watson-Crick base-pairing is widespread among potentially natural nucleic acid alternatives taken from RNA's close structural neighborhood. A comparison of RNA and such alternatives with regard to chemical properties that are fundamental to the biological function of RNA provides chemical facts that may contain clues to RNA's origin.
