LABOUR'S HIGH NOON
The Government and the Economy 1945-51
Jim Fyrth (ed)
The Labour governments of 1945-51 are seen by many as the high point of Labour's popularity and enthusiasm for reform. The period also established the framework for the postwar political consensus.
This collection of essays looks at the economic record of the administrations, critically evaluating the achievements, and analysing the extent to which decisions taken then affected later policy assumptions. The contributors cover a comprehensive range of issues including nationalisation and planning, the relationship between the economy and foreign policy, agriculture, women's employment, and the Scottish economy.
'This is a stimulating book'.

Altered States
Edited by John Spoehr and Ray Broomhill
In the thirteen chapters of Altered States, authors from a variety of academic, union and community backgrounds describe how during the 1990's conservative governments in the Australian states and in New Zealand have used the ideas of economic rationalism to mount a strident assault on the welfare state and centralised wage fixation.

Presbyterian Polity (mid 1500s)
Younger Mary (Stuart) Older Queen of Scots "Bloody" Mary I (Tudor) Queen of England Elizabeth I (Tudor)
Queen of England How was it that Protestantism first came to Scotland?
  • Scotland's interest in Protestantism came at a time when the Scottish were very sensitive to their own national feelings. England had long been a problem for Scotland. But by the mid 1500s France was just as big a problem. Scotland had been under the rule of the Stuart family and now the rights of the throne belonged to Mary Stuart , a young woman engaged to marry Francis, the Dauphin or Prince of France. When she moved to France to be with Francis the Scottish felt a bit betrayed. She left the rule of Scotland to her rigidly Catholic mother, Mary of Guise, who would serve as regent until Mary Stuart came of age. The Guise family was well known for its hatred of Protestants. It was also well understood that when Mary Stuart finally did marry Francis, Scotland would be offered to him as a gift. Scotland would thus lose its position as an independent nation and become merely a province of France. The Scots did not like this idea at all. Rumors about Protestantism were swirling through Scotlandand the people seem sincerely interested. Even the noblemen were interested. George Wishart preached the Protestant vision to the Scotsbased on his own interest in the ideas of Martin Luther. In essence Wishart was a Lutheranand a very prominent voice in the affairs of the Scottish church.

Families covered: Wishart of Carnebeg, Wishart of Logie, Wishart of Pittarrow [Family still being researched.] It appears likely that the founder of this family came to Britain from Normandy. The transcript of the book used as our Main Source reports the notice given in that book to an earlier book, "Life of George Wishart" by Charles Rogers, which states that Guiscard or Wiscard was "a Norman epithet used to designate an adroit or cunning person" and was conferred on Robert Guiscard, son of Tancred de Hauteville who became Duke of Calabria, founded the Kingdom of Sicily, and died 27.07.1085. Some of his descendants adopted Guiscard as their family name. There were Wychards (spelt variously) in several English counties in the early 13th century. At least some of them are presumed to have been related to ... John Wischard, Sheriff of Kincardineshire (temp Alexander II 1214-49) Sir John Wischard of Conveth, etc (d before 1286)

John Knox John Knox 1514(?) - 1572. John Knox was born about 1514 near Haddington, Lothian and died on the 24th November 1572 in Edinburgh. He was the foremost leader of the Scottish Reformation, who set the austere moral tone of the Church of Scotland and shaped the democratic form of government it adopted. He was influenced by George Wishart, who was burned for heresy in 1546 and the following year Knox became the spokesman for the Reformation in Scotland. After a period of intermittent imprisonment and exile in England and on the European continent. In 1559 he returned to Scotland, where he supervised the preparation of the constitution and liturgy of the Reformed Church. His most important literary work was his History of the Reformation in Scotland. Early Life. Almost nothing is known of Knox's life before 1540, the accounts given by his earlier biographers being mostly fanciful. Of his parentage it is known only that his mother's name was Sinclair (Knox used the name John Sinclair as an incognito in times of danger), that his father's name was William, and that he and both Knox's grandfathers had fought and two of them had died, perhaps at the Battle of Flodden against Henry VIII's troops. The family may have been farmers. It is supposed that Knox trained for the priesthood under the scholar John Major, most probably at the University of St. Andrews. Knox did not take a master's degree, however, but he ended his training with a mind imbued with that delight in abstract thought and dialectical disputation which even in that age, was recognised throughout Europe as typical of Scottish scholarship. He was in priest's orders by 1540 and was in 1543 known to be also practising as an apostolic notary in the Haddington area, which would seem to indicate that he was in good standing with the ecclesiastical authorities.

High Street ("The Royal Mile") - John Knox' House: John Knox' House juts out into the street (left of center of the photo.) Built in 1490, the house is reputed to have been the manse of John Knox when he was minister of St. Giles'. The timber gallery and hand-painted ceiling are unusual features. John Knox was born a farmer in Haddington about 1514 (and not 1505 as the date on a window in his house records).
Knox died about age 58 in 1572. His first wife's brother was an ancestor of the present Queen. He studied at St. Andrews and was ordained a priest at about 25 years of age. He did not graduate as a Master of Arts however, probably because of an oath against "Lollardism" which graduates had to take. He tutored the children of gentlemen in East Lothian. John Knox was converted to Protestantism by the influence of the preaching of Thomas William. Because of persecution he moved from place to place. Protestants urged him to preach publicly.
