Physicist Witten to speak Sept. 1
"Duality and Unification" will be the topic for mathematical physicist Edward Witten of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies when he delivers a special Gemant Lecture on Monday, Sept. 1, at 3:30 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium, Rockefeller Hall. Witten is widely regarded as the leader in reviving the symbiosis between physics and mathematics. When modern science was born in the 17th century, physics and mathematics were one indivisible enterprise. But they slowly grew apart, and by the middle of this century, research in these fields had little in common. Witten's work on string theory has not only inspired a young generation of theoretical physicists, but also led to new research in pure mathematics. He is the first and only physicist to be awarded the Field Medal, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel Prize. This lecture is part of the Gemant Lecture series. The 1995 Andrew Gemant Award was given to Robert R. Wilson, Cornell professor emeritus of physics, by the American Institute of Physics, for his outstanding work linking physics to the arts and humanities. Part of the award includes provision for a series of lectures of interest to a broad scientific audience.

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Christian Stigen Larsen http://www.sublevel3.org

IN THE SUPREME COURT OF MISSISSIPPI NO. 96-KP-00399-SCT JACK WITTEN JONES a/k/a EDWARD EUGENE SHELTON v. STATE OF MISSISSIPPI THIS OPINION IS NOT DESIGNATED FOR PUBLICATION AND MAY NOT BE CITED, PURSUANT TO M.R.A.P. 35-A DATE OF JUDGMENT: TRIAL JUDGE: HON. KOSTA N. VLAHOS COURT FROM WHICH APPEALED: HARRISON COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT ATTORNEY FOR APPELLANT: PRO SE ATTORNEY FOR APPELLEE: OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL BY: BILLY L. GORE DISTRICT ATTORNEY: CONO CARANNA NATURE OF THE CASE: CRIMINAL - POST CONVICTION RELIEF DISPOSITION: AFFIRMED - 9/25/97 MOTION FOR REHEARING FILED: MANDATE ISSUED:
BEFORE DAN LEE, C.J., McRAE AND SMITH, JJ. SMITH, JUSTICE, FOR THE COURT:
Jack Witten Jones pled guilty to the crime of burglary in the Circuit Court of Harrison County and was sentenced as a habitual offender. Jones now appeals to this Court from the summary dismissal of his motion for post-conviction relief. Jones, relying on McNeal v. State , 658 So. 2d 1345 (Miss.1995), argues that the indictment charging him as a habitual offender was fatally defective because it failed to conclude with the language "against the peace and dignity of the State." Jones also argues that his counsel was ineffective and that he is entitled to an evidentiary hearing. Finding Jones's assignments of error to be without merit, we affirm. STATEMENT OF FACTS II.
