    Math 221b: Seiberg-Witten Theory and 4-manifolds, Spring 2002
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Room 209 Goldsmith
The course will give an introduction to gauge theory, focussing on Seiberg-Witten theory and applications to the topology of 4-dimensional manifolds. The speed at which I will go through the material depends on various factors, most notably the background of the students attending. Here is a brief outline of what I hope to cover.
  • Introduction to 4-manifolds. Basic invariants such as intersection form, characteristic classes. Survey of Freedman's results on topological classification. Discussion of basic problems of smooth classification. The Dirac operator. Clifford algebras, spin and spin^c structures, Weitzenbock formulas. Statement of index theorem in special cases. Seiberg-Witten equations. Group of automorphisms (gauge group) of the equations and construction of moduli space. Basic analytic results (slice theorem, simple estimates leading to compactness theorems). Seiberg-Witten invariants. Dimension of moduli space and orientations; perturbations and smoothness.

Recipient, 2002 Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize in Mathematics Yakov G. Sinai, professor of mathematics at Princeton University since 1993, is internationally regarded as a pioneer in the field of dynamical systems. His work has revolutionized the study of dynamical systems and influenced statistical mechanics, probability theory and statistical physics. Sinai's work deals with measuring dynamical systems, or systems that change over time, such as weather, the motion of planets and economic systems. These systems can be accurately measured in the short term (short term being relative to the issue at hand); but when analyzed in the long term, the systems are difficult to understand and predict. Sinai was the first to come up with a mathematical foundation for determining the number that defines the complexity of a given dynamical system. His mathematical system is called Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy.

Comments: 39 pp. Improved explanation of QCD string ending on domain wall; errors corrected and references added
    Journal-ref: Nucl.Phys. B507 (1997) 658-690
A brane configuration is described that is relevant to understanding the dynamics of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Confinement and spontaneous breaking of a discrete chiral symmetry can be understood as consequences of the topology of the brane. Because of the symmetry breaking, there can be domain walls separating different vacua; the QCD string can end on such a domain wall. The model in which these properties can be understood semiclassically does not coincide with supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory but is evidently in the same universality class.

Ed Witten, who is currently visiting Caltech, is a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey (the place where Einstein used to work.) Witten was not one of the creators of string theory, but since he joined "Team String" in the mid-eighties, he's been a leading visionary, pausing here and there to make revolutionary observations and discoveries in mathematics using observations gleaned from high energy theoretical physics. He recently spent two years at Caltech , a development that had East Coast string theorists fearing that the United States was tilting to the West. We interviewed him in John Schwarz's office at Caltech, which also happened to Richard Feynman's office when he was alive.
