Ludwig Wittgenstein
Brief Biography
Ludwig Joseph Johann Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was a Austrian and English philosopher. In his life he only published one work, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus , which was very influential amongst the logical positivists, also known as logical empiricists, but which was later criticised by Wittgenstein himself, in the unpublished Blue and Brown Books and in his final unpublished work Philosophical Investigations . He was an alumnus of the University of Cambridge/Trinity College (he submitted the Tractatus as his dissertation). Wittgenstein communicated with the Finnish philosopher Georg Henrik von Wright, who succeeded Wittgenstein as professor at University of Cambridge in England.
Detailed Biography
Ludwig Wittgenstein was born on April 26th 1889 in Vienna. His Jewish grandparents of his father's side had, after they had converted from Judaism to Protestantism, moved from Saxony in Germany to Vienna, where Ludwig's father, Karl Wittgenstein, gained wealth and esteem as one of the leading businessmen in the iron and steel industry in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ludwig's mother, Leopoldine (née Kalmus) was a Catholic, but her father was also of Jewish descent. After his birth Ludwig was baptized in a Catholic church (and when he died he would be given a Catholic burial although he never was a practicing nor a believing Catholic).
Ludwig grew up as the youngest of eight children in a family that provided an intellectually and a artistically stimulating environment. Ludwig's parents were both very musical and all their children were both artistically and intellectually gifted. Moreover the Wittgenstein's house attracted many people of culture, especially musicians. The family was often visited by artists such as

Cerezo, eds., Proceedings of the III Symposium on History of Logic , Gruyter, Berlin, 1996 Since there is no normal pagination on a web page, paragraph numbers are assigned here in lieu of that, included in brackets and placed flush right, just above the paragraph, for purposes of scholarly reference. It is now over thirty years since Richard Rorty pointed out the similarities between Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations (1953) and the philosophical framework of Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914), the American logician who was the founder of pragmatism. The view put forward by Rorty is that Peirce had envisaged and repudiated positivist empiricism fifty years earlier, and had developed a set of insights and a philosophical mood very similar to those of contemporary philosophers working under the influence of the later Wittgenstein. The affinity between Peirce's philosophy and the more recent tendency born of the rejection of the Tractatus and the positivism of the Vienna Circle, gave rise to an expectation that the study of Peircean pragmatism and the writings of the later Wittgenstein in ever closer comparison would shed increasing light on both philosophers' work (Rorty 1961).

Ludwig Wittgenstein (
"Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, davon muß man Schweigen". Der Philosoph, am 26. April in Wien als Sohn eines Stahlmagnaten geboren, studierte zunächst Ingenieurswissenschaften. Die Sprache der Physik faszinierte ihn als Möglichkeit, wahr und schlicht über Realität zu reden. So ging er als Student nach Cambridge zum Physiker und Philosophen Bertrand Russell, der sich damals mit der "logischen Struktur" der Sprache beschäftigte.

Wittgenstein, Ludwig Josef Johann (1889-1951), Austrian-British philosopher, who was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, particularly noted for his contribution to the movement known as analytic and linguistic philosophy. Life Work Wittgenstein's philosophical life may be divided into two distinct phases: an early period, represented by the Tractatus, and a later period, represented by the Philosophical Investigations. Throughout most of his life, however, Wittgenstein consistently viewed philosophy as linguistic or conceptual analysis. In the Tractatus he argued that "philosophy aims at the logical clarification of thoughts." In the Philosophical Investigations, however, he maintained that "philosophy is a battle against the bewitchment of our intelligence by means of language." The Tractatus Philosophical Investigations Additional works of Wittgenstein, all posthumously published, include Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics (1956), The Blue and Brown Books (1958), and Notebooks 1914-1916 (1961).

In a forthcoming piece in the New York Times Magazine I cite Wittgenstein's comment that philosophers are like garbage men who sweep the mind clean of wrong-headed concepts. I remember hearing or reading this anecdote in a college Wittgenstein seminar many years ago, but I have not been able to find a citation to back me up. Translated by Peter Winch. xii, 188 p. 1980 Paper COBE/EU $12.00 0-226-90435-0 Peter Finch's translation of Wittgenstein's remarks on culture and value presents all entries chronologically, with the German text alongside the English and a subject index for reference. "It was Wittgenstein's habit to record his thoughts in sequences of more or less closely related 'remarks' which he kept in notebooks throughout his life. The editor of this collection has gone through these notebooks in order to select those 'remarks' which deal with Wittgenstein's views abou the less technical issues in his philosophy. So here we have Wittgenstein's thoughts about religion, music, architecture, the nature of philosophy, the spirit of our times, genius, being Jewish, and so on. The work is a masterpiece by a mastermind."Leonard Linsky Subjects:
