Joseph Williamson Home Gallery History What's on ... News Joseph Williamson was born on 10th March 1769. His place of birth is not definitely proven, but is
widely believed to be Warrington. There is virtually no information on his early years bar the claim that
he left his family home aged 11 and went to Liverpool to seek employment. The fact that he left his
family as a child would suggest that the family was not wealthy.
Arriving in Liverpool in 1780, he would have been greeted by a city that was noisy and busy; its
landscape dominated by windmills and chimneys; animals being herded in some streets; grand
merchants' houses in others. All activity would have been centred on the docks and one of the
growing activities there would have been the importing of tobacco. The young Williamson would have had little difficulty finding a job in such a burgeoning town and at

Elizabeth Wolstenholme , the daughter of a Methodist minister from Eccles, was born in 1834. Elizabeth's brother Joseph received an expensive private education and eventually became professor of mathematics at Cambridge University . The Rev. Wolstenholme held traditional views on girls schooling and Elizabeth only received two years of formal education. After the death of both her parents, her guardians refused permission for Elizabeth to attend the newly opened, Bedford College for Women. Elizabeth decided to educate herself at home until she gained her inheritance at the age of nineteen. In 1853 Elizabeth purchased her own boarding school in Manchester Elizabeth believed that teaching was a highly skilled occupation that needed special training. In 1865 Elizabeth Wolstenholme joined with other women schoolteachers in her area to form the Manchester Schoolmistresses' Association. Two years later Elizabeth and

Gazetteer front page GENUKI Contents Transcription of The Lancashire Gazetteer , Joseph Aston, 1808 This transcription has been carried out as part of a larger project to produce a database of places in Lancashire and Yorkshire. The final product will be a Microsoft Access database with search facilities intended to overcome the difficulties of spelling variations. The aim is to locate each place with an Ordnance Survey grid reference, wherever possible, even if not shown on modern mapping. Aston's original Lancashire Gazetteer has unnumbered pages, and no attempt has been made during transcription to retain the original pagination of the Gazetteer. Likewise, fonts have not been slavishly copied beyond the use of capitalisation, italics and some font sizes. In a very few cases, the layout is slightly altered from the original. The information in the Appendix Addenda and Errata as given by Aston has been integrated into the main body of the text. In addition, the opportunity has been taken to correct what Aston calls 'accidental deviation from exact alphabetical arrangement.'

Joseph Magnall J oseph Magnall was born on the 28th August 1858 at Croichey (so far I have been unable to locate Croichey but the 1871 Census says that he was born in the Parish of Tottington and his birth certificate refers to the sub-district of Holcombe). He was the son of Thomas (HM059) and Rachel (HM060). Joseph's birth certificate uses the surname Mangnall rather than Magnall for his parents.
