Bob Woodward and the "Bush at War" Hagiography
by ROBERT JENSEN B ob Woodward's latest travelogue through the minds of the powerful, "Bush at War," has been widely praised as a compelling account of the Bush administration post-9/11. As I faded in and out of consciousness while reading, I imagined the following, rendered in Woodwardesque prose: Robert Jensen walked into the conference room with his dogeared copy of "Bush at War" and laid it on the mahogany table next to the manila folder that held the talking points he had rushed to finish before the meeting. He knew the revisions, made right up to the last second, had been hard on his staff, but this was a meeting with the president, with all the principals. Everyone knew what was at stake. Jensen knew the president would expect him to have answers, not just questions, about the importance of the book by Bob Woodward, the Washington Post's star reporter. But, Jensen pondered, was Woodward really just a reporter? Or had circumstances changed the once scrappy guy from the metro desk who had broken the Watergate story wide open? Was Woodward something more? A first-draft historian? A meta-journalist? Jensen knew the president would want an assessment, and he knew that he would be on the spot.

Visitor # since 3/24/2000 email Robert and Richard Woodward were thought to be brothers.  They were probably born in Acton Parish, Cheshire, England, and were probably sons of Edward Woodward .  (See map of England for location.)  They are believed to have immigrated to America with sister and brother-in-law Thomas and Elizabeth Woodward Eavenson . The principal point of confusion in the Robert and Richard Woodward families is that both Robert and Richard had sons named Richard, who were both born about 1673.  Fortunately, the two families lived in slightly different areas of Chester County which helps sort them out.  Robert and his sons originally lived on Crum Creek in Providence Township, while Richard and his sons lived on Chester Creek in  Thornbury Township. Later Richard, son of Robert, lived in East Bradford and Richard, son of Richard, lived in West Bradford (see Chester County maps).
J. Gary Woodward, in The Woodward Family of Chester County, Pennsylvania , gives us the names of children of Robert Woodward as son Richard and daughter Ann .  He also considers another daughter Hannah , who was buried 25 November 1686 in Acton Parish and was a daughter of "Roberti Woodward," although it is not certain it is this Robert Woodward.  Land records of Chester County, Pennsylvania, give us two more names.  On 8 March 1696

Based on Christopher Bond's retelling of the Victorian pennydreadful The String of Pearls , (which was itself a retelling of a British myth, posibly rooted in truth) this musical (with a book by Hugh Wheeler) tells the tale of Sweeney Todd, a murderous barber, and his partner in crime, Nellie Lovett, a baker who disposes of the bodies by baking them into her pies. Meanwhile, Anthony Hope, a sailor who saved Todd's life, falls in love with Todd's estranged daughter, Johanna, who is being brought up as the ward of the twisted Judge Turpin. Includes the songs "Not While I'm Around," "Pretty Women," and "A Little Priest."

http://www.billstclair.com/LindaHamilton/woodward.html
I read, with my usual disgust, about the killing of Robert Woodward by the Brattleboro, Vt. police. His crime: seeking refuge and prayer in a Unitarian Church because he was thinking about taking his own life and was armed with a small knife only threatening to use it on himself. The only fact that surprised me was that the community was shocked that the police would kill him. Now mind you these are the people who are highly trained in disarming people, not to mention that they are armed with pepper spray and clubs. One would have to have been unconscious for the last decade to not know that the police are out of control and not made accountable for their actions. If you are someone who has heard about corrupt policeman, judges, district attorneys, lawyers and other government employees and did nothing to demand they be removed from their position then you are one of the causes that set up the scenerio that occurred in Brattleboro. The community must demand the firing of not only the officers involved but the Chief of police. The chief's comment that he was sure proper procedures were followed shows his obvious disregard for human life. The public must demand that the crime be investigated and charges filed. Contrary to what some would like us to believe which, of course, was reinforced when the citizens of this country let Bill and Hillary Clinton get away without being prosecuted, NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. The proposal by the selectman that a citizen oversight committee be formed only shows their ignorance of how a republic works. They already have one. It is called a Grand Jury. By the way we don't live in a democracy. We live in a constitutional republic. That's why we say "... and to the Republic for which is stands." If one reads their history one would know that all democries lead to socialism which eventually leads to communism.

Robert Burns Woodward and the Art of Organic Synthesis Robert Burns Woodward was regarded as the consummate master of synthetic organic chemistry, and this Traveling Exhibit offers an overview of his life and work. Woodward profoundly influenced our understanding of the natural world and our ability to produce life-saving pharmaceuticals. An artist and architect of molecules, he used new instruments and theories to understand naturally occurring molecules and recreate them in the laboratory.

On December 2, 2001, 37-year-old Robert A. Woodward entered the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Brattleboro, Vermont. Parishioners of this peace-loving church who were waiting for the 10 a.m. service to begin instead heard from the weeping stranger, standing at the altar podium, who spoke about the environment and civil rights and his fears of being hunted down, tortured and killed by the FBI. "If the police are called," eyewitnesses recount Woodward saying, "I will be killed." Children were soon taken outside and at 10:04 a.m. church president Charles Butterfield placed a 911 call from his office. According to Butterfield he requested that plainclothes officers be dispatched. He related that Woody was "deathly afraid" of authorities, and that he had a knife and was threatening to take his own life.

The Robert Woodward Memorial Fund All Souls Church On Sunday December 2, 2001 just before he morning service was to begin, Robert Woodward burst into the church agitated, afraid and pleading for sanctuary from those who he believed would put him in jail and torture him. Unable to calm him in order to make sense of the situation, the police were called to remove him. Instead they took his life. As we have come to know more about Bob Woodward, we have learned that he loved children, helped them professionally, and he loved the environment which he also worked to preserve. He practiced what he preached, walking everywhere, riding a bike whenever he could and using his car as seldom as possible. He did not collect things, he lived simply collecting friends instead. Keeping these attributes in mind, the Board of Trustees of All Souls Church has decided to establish the Raobert Woodward Memorial Fund both to preserve his memory and to honor his commitment to the natural world he loved so much. After a sufficient time has passed, donations to the fund will be turned into a single check and presented to the Vermont Natural Resources Council, a non profit environmental organization founded in 1963 to protect Vermont's natural resources and environment through research, education and advocacy. Since " Woody" as his friends called him, lived and died in Vermont, we believe this is a fitting memorial. Several friends and particularly Mr. And Mrs. Paul Woodward have been consulted, and believe this is the right thing to do. If you agree, won't you join us by sending a contribution to the fund. Checks should be made out to the Robert Woodward memorial Fund and mailed to All Souls Church, P.O. Box 2297, West Brattleboro, VT. 05303 Robert S.
