The Equalizer was a one-hour CBS crime drama, which ran from September 18, 1985 until August 24, 1989. The series was initially created in the Fall of 1980 by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. The were unable to sell it until 1985, when CBS was in a bind for programming and was willing to try almost anything. Michael Sloan, Executive Producer of the pilot episode, won the casting of Edward Woodward (a British actor known only in America for his role in the Australian film, Breaker Morant , for the title role of The Equalizer, Robert McCall, over the strong objections of CBS programmers. However, CBS soon found Woodward to be a compelling actor who dominated the small screen and mesmerized audiences, making the series an instant cult hit. The unique aspect of the series was that the hero was over 50. The appeal of the older, fatherly-wise yet world-weary character was that he was dangeroushe had killed and was capable of doing so again. CBS did not want the McCall character to be identified as British and also refused to allow the agency to be called the CIA. It became known as simply "The Company." Robert McCall is an ex-Company agent who applies his dangerous and often deadly skills to helping people who have nowhere else to turn. An agent of 30 years, McCall quit The Company to go independent, setting up shop in New York City, operating out of his apartment. He only takes cases from people who have exhausted conventional resources, those who fall through the cracks, whose plights are ignored and are at the end of their rope. McCall "equalized" the odds for people in trouble who answered his newspaper ad:
