WREN, SIR CHRISTOPHER
In September of the same year (1666) the fire occurred, and the old St Paul's was completely gutted. From 1668 to 1670 attempts were being made by the chapter to restore the ruined building; but Dean Sancroft was anxious to have it wholly rebuilt, and in 1668 he had asked Wren to prepare a design for a wholly new church. This first design, the model for which is preserved in the South Kensington Museum, is very inferior to what Wren afterwards devised. In plan it is an immense rotunda surrounded by a wide aisle, and approached by a double portico; the rotunda is covered with a dome taken from that of the Pantheon in Rome; on this a second dome stands, set on a lofty drum, and this second dome is crowned by a tall spire. But the dean and chapter objected to the absence of a structural choir, nave and aisles, and wished to follow the medieval cathedral arrangement. Thus, in spite of its having Wren also designed a colonnade to enclose a large piazza forming a clear space round the church, somewhat after the fashion of Bernini's colonnade in front of St Peter's, but space in the city was too valuable to admit of this. Wren was an enthusiastic admirer of Bernini's designs, and visited Paris in 1665 in order to see him and his proposed scheme for the rebuilding of the Louvre. Bernini showed his design to Wren, but would not let him copy it, though, as he said, he " would have given his skin " to be allowed to do so. After the destruction of the city of London Wren was employed to make designs for rebuilding its fifty burnt churches, and he also prepared a scheme for laying out the whole city on a new plan, with a series of wide streets radiating from a central space. Difficulties arising from the various ownerships of the ground prevented the accomplishment of this scheme.

Sir Christopher Wren
The English "Wrenaissance"
Sir Christopher Wren, along with his associates, represented the dominant force in late seventeenth and early eighteenth-century architecture. By far his greatest work, St. Paul's Cathredral in London, was begun in 1675 and completed in 1711. For the next two centuries, and until the advent of the modern skyscraper, St. Paul's dominated the London skyline as a symbol of the stability of the Church of England and English government and society. Perhaps the single greatest opportunity for Wren's career was also one of the great catastrophes for the city of London: the Great Fire of 1666. This fire destroyed most of old London, including old St. Paul's and many churches. Wren came along at the perfect time to benefit from this tragedy. There are now dozens of Wren churches in London, and many more by his two associates Nicholas Hawksmoor and Sir John Vanbrugh . Besides St. Paul's Wren's second greatest achievement is Greenwich Hospital (also worked on by Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh), begun in 1696. The Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford is by Wren, and his direct influence even reached America in the Wren Building of William and Mary College in Virginia. One of the most interesting alterations in building style to occur in England in the late seventeenth century was Wren's remodeling of Henry VIII's Tudor Hampton Court Palace . The difference between the Tudor entrance and the Wren-ovated garden front is remarkable. St. Paul's Cathedral (1675-1710)

Christopher Wren
Wren the scientist.
The greatest British architect of all time was born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire, in 1632, the son of the rector of Knoyle. Christopher Wren attended Westminster School and Wadham College, Oxford, where he graduated with a masters degree in 1651. At this stage Wren was a pure scientist (by the standards of the time) focusing on astronomy, physics, and anatomy. He experimented with submarine design, road paving, and design of telescopes. At the tender age of 25 he was offered the Chair of Astronomy at Gresham College, London. In 1660 Wren was one of the founding members of the Society of Experimental Philosophy. In 1662, under the patronage of Charles II, this body became known as the Royal Society.

Wren, Sir Christopher Wren, Sir Christopher, , English architect. He was professor of astronomy at Gresham College, London, from 1657 to 1661, when he became Savilian professor of astronomy at Oxford. Though now known as the greatest architect of the English baroque style, Wren was a celebrated mathematician in his time. In 1665 he spent six months in Paris studying architecture. After the great fire of 1666 he prepared a masterly plan for the reconstruction of London, never executed. He designed, however, many new buildings, the greatest being Saint Paul's Cathedral

1665 besuchte
