William Young 's father was Henry Young, a grocer, and his mother was Hephzibah Jeal. William was his parents' eldest son and he was brought up by his parents as a Baptist. He attended the City of London School where the headmaster was particularly fascinated by mathematics. This headmaster was Edwin A Abott, who was the author of the famous popular mathematical work Flatland. He immediately saw the potential that Young had for mathematics and he encouraged him in that direction. In 1881 Young entered Peterhouse, Cambridge to begin his undergraduate studies of mathematics. At Cambridge Young was an outstanding student showing far more mathematical ability than any of the other students in his year. However to achieve the position of First Wrangler (the top position in the list of First Class graduates) in the Mathematical Tripos required enormous dedication and training in the type of examination questions set in the Tripos. It would be fair to say that the First Wrangler was the most skilled at answering Tripos questions rather than the best mathematician and many of the great mathematicians who attended Cambridge failed to gain this distinction. Young was one such student for he made a very conscience decision that becoming First Wrangler was less important to him than having varied interests, both academic and sporting, at university. He was fourth wrangler in 1884. While at Cambridge he put aside the Baptist religion of his family and as baptised into the Church of England.

Information Lyrics According to Barrett, the first, second and last verses were from Bedfordshire and were popular in children "employed in straw-plaiting." The first verse and tune came from Cheshire. The song was printed on a broadside by J. Evans, Smithfield, in 1794.* It was printed on numerous broadsides including Catnach, Such and Pitts. It was also found in Canada; in Quebec and in Newfoundland seaports.** In American Balladry from English Broadsides Malcolm Laws lists variants as Willie and Mary Mary and Willie and The Sailor's Bride . It was known in Vermont as The Single Sailor . The ballad was found in songbooks from Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri and Tennessee. It was also found in Canada, in Quebec and in Newfoundland seaports.*** As William and Mary walked by the sea-side,
Their last farewell to take,
Should you never return, young William, she said,
My poor heart will surely break.
Be not thus dismayed, young William he said,
As he pressed the dear maid to his side

Hubris and the Transistor William Bradford Shockley clearly was one of the brightest scientists of the 20th century, yet he lived a life of noisy desperation. He was a modern hero taken from one of the ancient Greek tragedies, caught in an age he helped invent. Like Orestes and Oedipus, Shockley was driven by the internal demon of hubris. Unlike Orestes and Oedipus, however, he never found redemption. Yet without him, you would probably be doing something less interesting right now. "One of the century's most important scientists"

An Encapsulated Biography
Biographical Links Home For all his fame and celebration, William Shakespeare remains a mysterious figure with regards to personal history. There are just two primary sources for information on the Bard: his works, and various legal and church documents that have survived from Elizabethan times. Naturally, there are many gaps in this body of information, which tells us little about Shakespeare the man. There is great conjecture about Shakespeare's childhood years, especially regarding his education. It is surmised by scholars that Shakespeare attended the free grammar school in Stratford, which at the time had a reputation to rival Eton. While there are no records extant to prove this claim, Shakespeare's knowledge of Latin and Classical Greek would tend to support this theory. In addition, Shakespeare's first biographer, Nicholas Rowe, wrote that John Shakespeare had placed William "for some time in a free school." John Shakespeare, as a Stratford official, would have been granted a waiver of tuition for his son. As the records do not exist, we do not know how long William attended the school, but certainly the literary quality of his works suggest a solid education. What is certain is that William Shakespeare never proceeded to university schooling, which has stirred some of the debate concerning the

Posted on Sun, Jan. 21, 2001 Silicon Valley pioneer William Hewlett dead at 87 He leaves legacy as businessman, philanthropist and friend BY TRACY SEIPEL AND THERESE POLETTI Mercury News William R. Hewlett, who helped create Silicon Valley by co-founding the original garage start-up 62 years ago, died Friday in his sleep at his Palo Alto home. He was 87. Hewlett, a gentle, witty, inquisitive man, founded Hewlett-Packard Co. with fellow Stanford University classmate David Packard in 1938 to make oscilloscopes and other measuring instruments. Today, Hewlett-Packard is a computer giant, the 13th-largest business in the U.S., with annual sales of $49 billion and 88,500 employees in more than 120 countries. But Hewlett and Packard built more than machines. They built a corporate philosophy based on trusting employees and leaving them free to experiment and even fail. That philosophy, fondly referred to as the ``HP Way,'' became a model for corporations worldwide. ``Today we at Hewlett-Packard mourn the passing of a revered leader, an inspiring icon of international business and a great man,'' Hewlett-Packard's chief executive officer, Carly Fiorina, told employees Friday morning in a public announcement and company e-mail. ``The story of Bill Hewlett is the story of extraordinary contribution, extraordinary humanity and caring.''

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback William Shakespeare (1564-1616) English poet, dramatist, and actor, considered by many to be the greatest dramatist of all time. Some of Shakespeare's plays, such as HAMLET and ROMEO AND JULIET, are among the most famous literary works of the world. Shakespeare was the most popular dramatist of his age. However, his early works did not match the artistic quality of Marlowe's dramas. If he had died on the same year than Marlowe, in 1593, today he perhaps would be considered a minor poet. Shakespeare became the first to appeal and to meet with the full approval of a broad and mixed public embracing almost all levels of society. He possessed a large vocabulary for his day, having used 29,066 different words in his plays. Today the average English-speaking person uses something like 2,000 words in everyday speech. "It may be that the essential thing with Shakespeare is his ease and authority and thay you just have to accept him as he is if you are going to be able to admire him properly, in the way you accept nature, a piece of scenery for example, just as it is." (Ludwig Wittgenstein in Culture and Value William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small country town. The black plague killed in 1564 one out of seven of the town's 1,500 inhabitants. Shakespeare was the eldest son of Mary Arden, the daughter of a local landowner, and his husband John Shakespeare (c. 1530-1601), a glover and wood dealer. John Aubrey (1626-1697) tells in

Lester Bangs Runtime: His first film since Jerry Maguire (1996), writer-director Cameron Crowe has crafted the most important film about rock ‘n’ roll in cinema history. But it’s not rock ‘n’ roll that you see on TV, or rock ‘n’ roll that you read about in music reviews – or the artifice of sitcom-styled rockumentaries. Crowe is not interested in exploring his own journey through coming of age. And his film works – really works – because it is we that get on the Greyhound bus at the beginning of the film, as much as Crowe, in search of the American Dream. As a story, Almost Famous tells the autobiographical tale of how 15-year-old William Miller (Patrick Fugit) leaves home and lands a coveted writing assignment for Rolling Stone, covering the rise of would-be stars “Stillwater”. His sister, Anita, has already set the backdrop to the story, having fled from home some five years before, leaving her little brother with the only thing that made sense to her: a Who album affixed with the note “Listen to Tommy with a candle burning, and you will see your entire future.” As William gets on the greyhound bus, he is really trying to make sense of what he has lost – the innocence his sister took from him when she abandoned him by fleeing home.

    Evangelical Agnosticism (1985)
    William Henry Young
The Summer 1981 FREE INQUIRY contained the article “What is Agnosticism?" by H. J. Blackham. It dealt primarily with intimations of agnosticism among skeptical philosophers before 1869, when Thomas Henry Huxley invented the term as a label for his personal approach to religious and philosophical questions. This article will provide some history about agnosticism since 1869 and will suggest the reasons for the introduction of the term evangelical agnosticism . It will not deal with the relationship between the words agnosticism skepticism rationalism , and other related terms in the freethought tradition. Huxley’s account of his invention of the word agnostic was written in an essay entitled “Agnosticism” some twenty years after he coined the term. At this time he was sixty-four years old and his place in the Victorian establishment was very secure. He was an original and influential member of the London School Board, president of the Royal Society, and a trustee of the British Museum. Called “Darwin’s Bulldog,” Huxley was renowned for his spirited defense of many scientific ideas that were unpopular with the religious establishment. He wrote:
When I reached intellectual maturity and began to ask myself whether I was an atheist, a theist, or a pantheist; a materialist or an idealist; a Christian or a freethinker; I found that the more I learned and reflected, the less ready was the answer; until, at last, I came to the conclusion that I had neither art nor part with any of these denominations, except the last. The one thing in which most of these good people were agreed was the one thing in which I differed from them. They were quite sure they had attained a certain "
